☆ ┇ as competitions and events had ended for this season, it was again time for guanghong to spend his time practicing. last year’s off-season had been spent at a training camp in canada, but this time his coach had arranged for them to travel to the US. the idea had been met with great enthusiasm from guanghong, who had immediately began searching up how to get to all the sights and attractions he wanted to see in america. for a while, it was even enough to cancel out the nervousness over having to practice somewhere unfamiliar, alongside people he didn’t know.
that nervousness makes itself known the first day at the rink. there’s already a couple of people here and there, but he doesn’t dare look any of them in the eye, doesn’t dare open his mouth to speak any other language than his own. his english is fine, but having to talk to native speakers is scary. luckily, the other figure skaters seem to keep to themselves, only talking to people they already know-- guanghong feels both relief and loneliness pricking at him, still with that pesky anxiety weighing on his shoulders of course.
he manages to push away the unnecessary feelings for now, trying his best to focus on warming up. occasionally, he can’t help but sneak glances at the people around him out of mere curiosity. there’s one in particular who catches his attention, a boy perhaps a couple of years older than him, skating with his earbuds in.
it’s not until guanghong takes a break that he gets the chance to actually communicate with the other boy-- and even then it’s by chance; guanghong is leaning against the barrier of the rink when he sees a water bottle roll over towards his feet. picking it up, he meets the eyes of the unknown boy from earlier. his gaze moves from the bottle in his hands and back up at the boy before he puts two and two together, offering up the bottle to him. “ ...yours? ” he finally manages, a single timid word spoken-- enough to convey the message, yet short enough to keep himself from messing up the english.
