The time has come for me to rant about my silly comic and everything that went wrong.
So, to start off, came up with the idea the way I usually do, out on a walk. Came home, wrote a lil script in drafts.
Did not click save on that draft. Quit my browser for reasons and then went aw shit wait.
Rewrote it. Probably a bit better than the first draft. No problem.Ā
(This was indicative of problems to come)
^ the version in my drafts. I guess I can delete it now.
After letting it percolate a bit, I did some quick thumbnails in my sketchbook. AKA the only part I only had to do once.
This was also the stage where I got really attached to the stupid doodly reactions.
So. All good to go. I complain about the process on this blog the entire time. People who do comics regularly, you are amazing. wtf.Ā
So then I decided to do the comic on my fancy Wacom MobileStudio tablet computer. I make a file in ClipStudio, draw out all my roughs based on the thumbnails, weāre in good shape. My computer needed to restart but thatās not a big deal right
(spoiler: it was a big deal)
I decide that I am LONELY so WHY NOT TRY STREAMING IT ON TWITCH
Surprisingly, people actually show up to watch and chat and it feels really good. Computer restarts. Restart stream. Gotta redraw that last panel. Computer restarts. Ok gotta save really frequently. Restart stream. Repeat for about 2 hours.
Computer restarts right as I hit the save button.
File is corrupted. Three hours of work lost.
This phone pic and I guess the VOD are all that is left. RIP digital comic.
Redraw about half the comic in pencil in my sketchbook in a fit of rage.
The following day, too exhausted and burnt out to work on anything. Sent an email to Wacom tech support but thereās no way Iām trusting the computer for the bulk of the work.
Finish drawing. Panels have somehow increased to 23. Ink and color some of them. But I donāt like how some of them have turned out, and I was really enjoying using copy/paste on the computer for comedic timing and keeping placement consistent. Realize I have a light table. Carefully fold and rip comic into individual panels; gotta do this anyway because my only scanner is a little portable guy that canāt fit my whole sketchbook.Ā
^I cropped Felix out of these WIPs because I was sending them to my friend who hasnāt watched any of s4 yet.
Next morning, day of Strike Back release, a day later than I wanted the thing finished and published, use light table to finish the unfinished panels, ink everything, color everything. Scan everything.Ā
Now just to add text. I will add text on the computer because my handwriting is awful. Iāve done it before (a long time ago) this will be fine.
(it was not fine.)
First of all, everything did have to go through my still malfunctioning Wacom because it has an SD card slot and my Macbook Air does not. Send through Google Drive to Macbook so I can crop and fix color in Preview, awesome. Send back over to try and add text in ClipStudio. Nope itās still crashing, alright, back to Macbook and Iāll see if I can get it on Preview or something. No, that looks awful and I canāt make speech bubbles, wait thereās a drawing app on Google, right? Oh this is going great, I can have it all in one image and it looks good and Iāll just download it on the Wacom to add text. Hey why is it so small. Okay do it over and this time Iāll make sure of the correct size. Itās still small when I download it. Okay itās HUGE this time so that shouldWHY DOES IT AUTOMATICALLY CHANGE THE SIZE FROM THE ONLINE VERSION WHEN I DOWNLOAD IT SO ITāS TINY AND PIXELLATED AND ILLEGIBLE THE EPISODE IS COMING OUT I WANNA WATCH IT WHY
At some point, I give up. I grab my pens, relieved I blocked out space in the panels for speech bubbles, and resign myself to bad handwriting and poorly cleaned up panels. Most of itās okay. At some point I wrote a W instead of an M and had to scribble. Had to use a post-it to redo a speech bubble I didnāt leave enough space for. Scan the newly text-filled images while making nachos because fuck it I deserve nachos. (The nachos helped my mood considerably).Ā
Stick all 23 images into a tumblr post and hope to god it lets me post even though Iām pretty sure the image limit is 10.
Somehow. It works.
So there we go.Ā
6,532 notes later, I guess some of you fucking like it.Ā
Thank you all so much, Iām really glad I stuck it out despite all the shit that happened. I am gonna try and do more silly comics (got more scripts in my drafts) along with my fanfics n stuff, but hopefully not let it turn me into a ball of anxiety going forward. Also hopefully my Wacom will get fixed so I can stream again.
Yeah.
ALSO felt like I should mention redoing it so many times did result in me refining and adding more jokes. I havenāt seen anyone mention my favorite one yet, even though it turned out to be unfortunately relevant in the episode...

How to Ruin Your Investment Portfolio (Part III: ShortĀ Selling)
In Part II of this blog series, I wrote about how technical analysis is mostly nonsense. This post talks about why you should avoid short selling.
In Wall Street and beyond, there is no shortage of greedy people. Many will resort to strategies that are borderline immoral like short-sellingstocks of company XYZ and wishing that the company loses half of its value so long as they profit fromā¦

How to Ruin Your Investment Portfolio (Part II: TechnicalĀ Analysis)
In Part I of this blog series, I wrote about how day trading your way to riches is a foolās game. Letās expound on that a bit in Part II by discussing the demerits of employing Technical Analysis.

Ten Web Design and Development Fails
Or: how not to attract customers to your website thanks to shoddy web design and development
Since Dreamkatcha was formed, our aim from the start was to raise standards in web design. We are strong advocates of accessibility, clear design, and aim to raise the bar a little higher each time. In our time, we have seen some websites that were acceptable in the 1990s and should have stayed there. This has inspired our latest posting on the ten deadly sins of web design and development.
10. Neglecting Cross Browser Compatibility
Most of our web browsing is done on mobile devices ā iPhones, iPads, Android tablets and so on. More than ever, websites need to be designed for all browsers and all users, and this means using responsive web design techniques. From traditional PCs to the most modest of smartphones.
9. Automated Music
Just donāt bother. Having automated music on your website is a one-way ticket to higher bounce rates. The embedded audio file may be charming for 10 seconds but hearing the same muzak each time you load the site is irritating at the very least.
8. Ignoring White Space
A balance between content and whitespace is an essential ingredient of any website. The browser, irrespective of their device or PC does not want to be bombarded with an overkill of text, graphics, audio and video files. Potential customers may take their business elsewhere.
Images of text are a major accessibility issue. If s/he is unable to view images on your website, imagine if textual content was saved as an image file? Furthermore, your website wonāt be properly indexed by search engines if text is used in this way. Thanks to CSS techniques, this method is wholly obsolete.
5. Too Many Big Images
Big images can either take forever to load or be a pain to navigate on a mobile phone. If youāre designing for mobile devices as well as desktop PCs, ensuring the scalability of images is important. With loading time another issue, image sizes should strike a balance between clarity and file sizes.
4. No Clickable Logo
With responsive web design in its ascendency, the use of a clickable logo is more important than ever. Todayās web designers and visitors to your website associate the clickable logo as the back to Home link.
3. Confusing Navigation
In cyberspace, there is nothing worse than getting lost on a website due to arcane navigation systems. It is imperative that your website has the same navigation on all of its pages, with primary links given pride of place. Pull down menus from primary links could be used to direct users to secondary pages.
2. Inconsistent Style
Whatās worse than inconsistent navigation? An inconsistent style throughout your website. This was why CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) was invented in the first place. It also allows for wasteful coding, slowing down your website and its ability to be seen by search engine directories. A consistent house style throughout your website allows for continuity from the Home page to the Sitemap.
1. Splash Pages
For our final web design peeve, we look at something that was acceptable for a while though truly awful in 2017. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you⦠the Splash Page. The idea of a splash page was to āgreetā visitors to the clientās website, usually with a self-indulgent Flash or Shockwave movie clip. But, in the dial-up era, they were slow and added little value to the site. Which is why they were ā and still remain today ā discredited as a web design technique. This form of ego massaging is also bad for rankings.
Finallyā¦
We strongly advise refraining from using the ten techniques detailed above. Unless youāre the creative genius behind the Lings Cars website which breaks every design and style rule going. A poorly designed website is usually bad for business, but Ling Valentine bucks the trend. With the way it is designed, it actually satirises ā90s websites in a fun way and pricks the pomposity of its rivals.
