Im basing the countries in my fantasy story on countries and cultures in our world. I was wondering if you thought it would be better for the Asian-based countries to base them off regions (i.e. East Asia and South Asia as the basis for whole countries) or choose specific cultures/countries and only base them off a few countries' cultures (i.e. maybe Tibet, Uzbekistan, Laos, and Japan). For Africa/Americas, I'm choosing a few tribes to research, but I'm doing the clump method for Europe. Thanks.

This is my personal opinion, so take it with a grain of saltâIâd rather you choose specific countries and base it off of those cultures, since the pan-Asia thing is already a trope thatâs very harmful.

I agree. You could maybe also focus on cultures or regions that traditionally get left out when talking about East Asia or South Asia, like Nepal or Bangladesh.

Portraying Fantasy Cultures of PoC
Basically the things to watch for are accessorizing and othering. This usually happens when someone tries to fuse two cultures together while creating a fantasy world.
Donât do that - donât pick and choose what parts of a culture you like and shove them together with another things from another culture you like because this leads to accessorizing and othering.
Also - donât have a culture in the background with no one from that culture in the world or the main cast of the story. (See: Firefly and its racist shenanigans.)
