"The question we face is thus whether social memory is entering a phase of technological exteriorisation, where global processes of automatisation and synchronisation have accelerated to the point of pre-empting the imaginative dynamics of living memory - ie. the environmental adaptations that take place through rhythmisation and invention. .... However, an overly totalising critique of the synchronisation and homogenisation of rhythms may be dismissed. Not only has this not yet taken place, given that a large part of the world’s population is not even connected to the digital networks; more significantly, absolute synchronisation is not even possible since it equals death."

It was curious to think that the sky was the same for everybody (...). And the people under the sky were also very much the same

In addition, these new public spaces often have the brief of breathing new life into locations lacking any major architectural merit, whereas previous projects focused on iconic settings. This brief seems to be prompting certain cities to adopt rather extravagant projects, Curnier found. For example, the cities of St. Gallen, Glasgow, Copenhagen and Berlin have covered ground with red paint in order to distinguish their public spaces (see photos). Having initially been designed to stand out, these different spaces now look alike.
Nobody in Glasgow liked the Red in George Square... glad to say it’s gone now :)

The famous statue of Augustus (left) and a colorized replica (right) that is probably close to how the original looked like during the antiquity.
We know that ancient statues were painted, sometimes in bright colors. On the other hand, we modern people have associated them with the whitish color of marble. Do you think a lot of people would like to see the original get repainted? I think not—they’d probably find it Kitsch or fake-looking.

“It’s as if the Parthenon itself has been lowered to street level and surrounded by a cement pavement,” said Despoina Koutsoumba, president of the Association of Greek archaeologists. “There has been a great deal of pressure, especially from the cruise industry, to increase visitor capacity so that even larger crowds can be accommodated.”
According to experts, the concrete pavement may permanently damage the original foundations. In addition to the road surface, a number of facilities have been installed to optimise the visitor experience.
The original road was not suitable for wheelchairs or people with disabilities, so the new road was made wider and paved with concrete (the reason for using concrete is that it is a material close to the original paving blocks).
