A Message To The Academia Community
i’ve been feeling the need to speak about this because i rarely see anyone touching this topic. but the lack of cultural literature in the dark/light academia community is unsettling and makes me overwhelmingly sad.
it seems that people are failing to realize that there’s other forms of literature or even any type of humanities that doesn’t revolve around american or european studies. i understand you like your anicent greece and rome but have you ever thought about asia and the amazing asian writers of the world?
we praise holmer, wilde, goethe, shakespeare, plath, dickens, plato, and many more. but we never talk about dazai, mudimbe, natsume, chuya, mofolo, senghor, and soo many others.
and why is that?
why is europe and america the only countries worth mentioning when it comes to this community?
people are eager to learn any ancient language that doesn’t include the ancient tongue of islanders, africans, latin america, native americans and asia. which is upsetting because these places and their people are apart of our worldly history and they history is dying because of the lack of representation or interest. who deems these people’s history unworthy of learning because their culture isn’t as interesting as their marble sculpted european counterparts?
we write poetry about hades and persephone like they are the only gods and goddess worth mentioning. what about shiva? what about rudra? what about oko? what about ibeji? what about tabaldak? why do these divine beings have to sit on the bench while we praise zeus?
as human beings we have the power to rewrite and write history. so why not tell everyone’s story. but that’s just my two cents.
please share your opinions with me and get some sort of discussion going.
