Summary:
Darcy makes it so easy to love her. Too bad nowâs not the time to tell her.
------------------------------------------
âDo you really have to go in today?â Darcy asked, tightening her hold around his waist. âDoesnât AIM know itâs Saturday? And that I was going to make you breakfast in bed?â
âFor one, weâre in a hotel room, thereâs no way for you to cook me anything in bedâŚâ
âDidnât say one single word about food, Phil,â she teased, rolling over to her side to prop her head upon her hand. âBreakfast isnât always food, you know.â She winked, her long lashes fluttering in a way that made him legitimately sad he had to leave this warm little cocoon of affection that sheâd, albeit unknowingly, filled his heart with beginning with her impromptu suggestion the night before.
Why not have a staycation, since he didnât seem to ever leave DC for anything other than SHIELD business?
As it turned out, Darcyâs version of a staycation meant keeping him up past midnight with sex so hot, he almost thought he could have dreamed it, except his imagination wasnât this spectacular.
And now she was giving him âbreakfast in bedâ as well?
He reached for her, running his palm down her bare waist and down under the sheets to graze her hip and thigh as well. âSounds like it was going to be spectacular, Iâm sorry I have workâŚâ
âIt was going to be the breakfast of champions, Iâll have you know,â she replied haughtily. âI hope you realize that youâre missing a veritable banquet, Coulson.â
He chuckled and shifted closer. âIt wasnât a red alert, I could spare maybe twenty minutes or so? This hotel is closer to work than either of our apartmentsâŚâ
She grinned. âI guess I could give you two courses rather than the full five.â
âFive? Youâre aware Iâm a helluva lot older than you, arenât you? Five courses could kill me.â
âWhat a way to go,â she breathed, leaning closer and capturing his lips in a sensual kiss that damn near curled his toes on its own.
He wondered as she ducked under the covers. If she knew just how wrapped around her finger he really was. That heâd give her the world if she so much as asked.
Phil had made that promise to himself about four microseconds after Darcy had kissed him that first time. Call him a sugar daddy, call him whatever you wanted, but he wasnât ever going to say no to her about anything.
Leave it to Darcy to be such a stellar example of humanity that she never so much as asked him for the time. Well, she asked for his time. Which, as it turned out, was one of the only things he couldnât give her.
Heâd put the room on his credit card, though. And after this wake-up call?  He was going to add a massage and full spa day as well.
âYou okay?â she asked, her head coming back up from under the covers and tilting quizzically.
âFantastic,â he assured her. She made it so easy to love her. Even if he couldnât tell her yet.
Hell, AIM could wait. Heâd never been late before. Maybe he could do five full courses after all.

4. 'I thought you liked horror movies.' 'I liked the idea of holding your hand during horror movies. I hate horror movies.âÂ
Pairing: Darcy/Bucky
Rating: T
Bucky cringed and stared at the blinking clock of the tv doohickey and tried to ignore the sounds of a chainsaw cutting through bone and flesh. It wasâŚuncomfortably accurate to his knowledge. At his side Darcy whimpered softly and Bucky looked down to find her staring fixedly at the hem of his t-shirt sleeve, face wincing and fingers wrapping tightly around his own.
âYou donât like this one?â he asked, hoping the answer was âyes.â
âWhat?â Darcy looked up at him, eyes wide and let go of his hand. âNo! ItâsâŚâ she glanced at the screen, paled, and looked back to him quickly. âItâs a classic.â
Bucky squinted at her for a long moment, watching a blush spread over her cheeks, before she forced herself to look back at the screen, flinching at a spray of blood.
âWell I hate it,â he said.
Darcyâs hair whipped over his shoulder and she turned to look up at him. âYou do?â
âYeah,â Bucky said shrugging. âIâve hated all of them.â
âYou have?â she asked, expression falling.
âI just thought you liked horror movies,â he said. âAnd I donât mind ignoring them with you next to me.â
Darcyâs lips fell open and she gazed up at the ceiling for a moment, blinking. âI liked the idea of holding your hand during horror movies,â she said finally. âI hate horror movies.â
Bucky grinned and Darcy rolled her eyes, and then covered them with her free hand. Heâd laid claim to the other again, knotting their fingers together as he turned on the couch to face her.
âSam and Steve said they were good for that sort of thing,â Bucky said. âMostly they make me feel kind of queasy.â
âSo queasy!â Darcy said, twisting so their knees bumped gently together. âAnd likeâŚI canât even go around dark corners after. Iâve been turning all the lights in my apartment on every night for weeks.â
âI like musicals,â he said. âI like the dancing and the fancy outfits.â
âOh my god, you are so sexy, did you know that?â She was grinning and pulling her legs up underneath her on the couch to nestle closer to him.
His throat made a little sound and his thoughts spun through a time when he did know that and he enjoyed it and he wouldâve known exactly how to show a girl like Darcy why he didnât mind watching six horror movies in three weeks.
âSoooâŚâ Darcy said, drawing him back to the moment. âYou hate horror movies but you like sitting next to me and you donât mind holding my hand?â
âIâm here for the hand holding,â he said. âMain motivator.â
âDid Steve and Sam mention what else horror movies are good for?â Darcy asked, scooting closer in.
Bucky was pretty sure they had and he had blown off the idea that Darcyâcheerful, sarcastic, brilliant Darcyâwas gonna want anything from him but a scary movie buddy. He stretched his arm out across the back of the couch  to flick at the end of Darcyâs hair on her shoulder as a woman screamed hysterically on the screen.
âMight have,â he said, lips twitching. âMâold though. Might need a reminder.â
Her lips curled slyly up to one side. She pounced in time with a large bang from the movie, her hands bracing on his shoulders to push him back into the couch as she climbed up onto his lap with a giggle.
âYou either have excellent game, or none at all,â Darcy said, laugh in her voice and grin on her face.
âCome down here and find out, doll,â he said from the cushions.
He wondered for half a thought if he could live up to his own memories, to her expectations. But she sighed, high and soft as their lips slid together, sweet and slippery and pressing deeper. Her body relaxed, spreading out over the length of him, melting against him as he turned to cage her against the back cushions, cradling her in his hold. And he thought that this was all a little bit familiar and absolutely never better.
Heyyyyy. I wish you would write a Wintershock with this: âDude why did that siren take on my image to try and seduce you, is there something you wanna tell me?â
âDr. Foster, the Avengers havereturned. Prince Thor requests your presence in the med bay.â
Darcyâs ears pricked up at theannouncement and she glanced at Jane to find her wide-eyed with worry.
âIs he hurt? Is anyone hurt?âJane asked, already closing her laptop and swiping her phone off the desk.
âOnly Sergeant Barnes and AgentBarton.â
âShit,â Darcy whispered indismay.
She watched Jane from the cornerof her eye as the scientist hurried to the door but Darcy, herself, made nomove to leave. She desperately wanted to go, but decided she would simplyclutter up the area. Post-mission reunions were exclusive to the Avengers andtheir beloved/close friends only.
âYou, too, Ms. Lewis,â JARVISsaid.
Darcy looked up, bewildered.âWhat now?â
âYour presence is required in themed bay as well.â
Jane stopped at the door andturned to her stumped assistant. âWell, donât just sit there!â
Darcy jumped up and sped afterJane, her mind spinning with concern for Clint and Bucky, interspersed with herbafflement over JARVISâ message. Sure, she was acquainted with the Avengers, some more than others, but she wasnât that close to any of them, atleast not enough to warrant an invitation to post-mission group hugs.
Jane took the private elevatordown to the medical floor, Darcy fidgeting nervously beside her.
âHow hurt do you think they are?âshe asked, looking around at the slick metal lining of the elevator. It wasbigger than the employee elevator and housed a freaking couch in case one got tired of standing.
Darcy didnât have clearance touse the private elevator.
âI donât know.â Jane shrugged.âHope theyâre not too serious. Bucky can heal, but ClintâŚâ
âYeah.â Darcy coughed guiltily. She was more worried about Bucky. Clint was a great guy, no doubt, but Bucky?Bucky was special. He was strong, funny, criminally handsome, and heappreciated Darcyâs choice in movies.
She maybe nursed a small crush onhim. Maybe.
Small.
One-sided.
Jane poked her when they reachedthe med bay and Darcy looked up to find the Avengers, Nick Fury and Maria Hillstanding there in a circle. Thor broke off to envelope Jane in his arms, pressinga brief, relieved kiss to her lips.
âDarcy,â he said with a smile, turning to give her a hug as well.
Darcy happily hugged him back, squeezing his biceps and lingering deliberately until he barked out a laugh andpushed her away.
âLewis,â Tony Stark greeted, beckoningher into the circle. âHow many times have I told you, no inappropriate behaviorin my tower?â
Darcy rolled her eyes. âLikeyouâre one to talk. Howâs Bucky?â she asked, adding belatedly, âAnd Clint?â
âTheyâll be fine.â
âCool.â She stifled a sigh ofrelief. âSo why am I here?â
Tony eyed the people around them.âAnyone want to fill her in on what happened?â
The first person to catch Darcyâseye was Steve. He looked drained but offered her a polite smile. Beside him,Natasha Romanoff smirked, looking no less scary than she usually looked. Furyand Agent Hill were as impassive as ever. Dr. Banner sported tattered clothesand looked about ready to collapse.
No one stepped up to answerTonyâs question.
âWhat is it?â Darcy finallyblurted, unable to take the suspense. âIs it my parents? Are they supervillainsnow? âCause last I checked, my dad was working with unstable chemicals at KripkoChem.â
Darcy had warned him to becareful. Playing with science was what had caused Johann Schmidt to become theRed Skull in the first place. It wasnât safe, dammit! Why did no one everlisten to her?
âThis is all your fault,â shethrew carelessly at Jane, who gave her a flat look, totally unaffected by thebaseless accusation. She was used to Darcy blaming her for every wrong thing inher life. More often than not, it was funny.
âYour dadâs fine, Darcy,â Steve assuredher. He sighed and looked at Fury, who grimaced.
âIâm outta here. Debrief in anhour.â
âI dislike him a lot,â Darcywhispered to Tony as the former director of SHIELD stalked off, his leathercoat billowing impressively behind him.
âEveryone does,â Tony whisperedback. âHeâs very unlikable.â
Once Fury had disappeared, Stevestepped forward and took Darcyâs arm, leading her some distance away from thegroup. Tony followed, a curious bounce to his step. For a man sporting an uglybruise on his forehead, he looked a little too gleeful for Darcyâs comfort.
âUh,â she mumbled, glancing backat the others. They watched her for a moment before Jane said something andeveryone turned their attention to her. Darcy scrunched up her face at Tony.âAm I fired? Because I swear I havenât posted unsolicited Avengers photos ontwitter in more than three weeks!â
Tony snorted, but was otherwiseunsurprised by her admission. âYouâre not fired, but weâre gonna have a talkabout your extracurricular activities in the tower.â
âNever mind that,â Steveinterrupted impatiently. âDarcy. This is about the mission.â
Darcy blinked, a surprised smilebeginning to creep onto her face. âYouâre allowed to tell me? Am I beingpromoted?â
âUh, no. Normally, we wouldnâttell you about where we go and what we do butâŚâ Here, Steve paused and lookeduneasily at the closed door to his left. âBut this concerns you, soâŚâ
Darcy nodded slowly, wonderinghow in hell an Avengers mission could concern her. Stranger things have happened, Darcy, she reminded herself, smilingat Steve in encouragement. âLay it on me, Captain.â
Her eyes flickered briefly to theclosed door. Was Bucky in there?
âRight,â Steve began. âHave you,by any chance, heard of Sirens?â
âSirens, as in the myth? As in,mermaids who lure sailors into their traps with songs? As inââ
âYeah, yeah, theyâre real,â Tony declaredloudly, cutting her off.
Darcyâs smile didnât falter. Ifanything, it widened in amusement, a laugh bubbling up inside her, ready toburst forth at the first sight of a mischievous smile on their faces. Shewaited for one of them to yell âGotcha!â and when no one did, her brow furrowedin confusion. She focused her questioning gaze on Steve, who looked as seriousas ever. If Captain America was serious, it definitely couldnât be a joke.
âI guess,â she began carefully. âIguess I can believe that.â After all, she had faced aliens, giant firedemons and more recently, before coming to live in the Tower, a handful ofHYDRA creeps trying to kidnap Jane.
âTheyâre not from here. But theydo exist in Asgard,â explained Steve. âApparently, someone thought itâd be funto drop Sirens into the Pacific and let them cause havoc. Thor found out and weimmediately left to capture them.â
Wow, Sirens. Darcy couldnât stopthe grin spreading on her face when the cool quotient of their mission finally settledin. Her overactive imagination instantly began conjuring images to supportSteveâs words. Stormy skies, dark choppy waters, a mysterious tune in the air,a ship manned by Midgardâs most capable warriors⌠it was a scene right out of amedieval fantasy novel.
âSo, you were off on an excitingfishing trip this past week, eh?â Darcy couldnât help but ask, âWhat are theylike, the Sirens? Beautiful or monstrous? Green or sparkly? Wait⌠how are youguys even here right now? Shouldnât you be rotting in their underwater caves, lulled there by their enchanting voices?â
âYour confidence in our abilitiesis inspiring,â deadpanned Tony.
Darcy snickered. âSo, whathappened? Did you capture them all?â
âWe couldnât. It got really uglyand none of them survived.â Steve paused and looked at the door again. âExceptone.â
âOookay.â Darcyâs eyes swept fromSteve to Tony and back. âIâm still waiting for the part where you tell me howany of this concerns me.â
âThe remaining Siren⌠well, Buckywouldnât let us kill her and,â Steve cleared his throat, âand so we brought herhere.â
âAlso, she looks like you,â Tonyadded quickly, earning a glare from Cap. The billionaire merely shrugged.
Darcy stared at them, utterlynonplussed. âWhat?â
âYes, well, Sirens assume theform ofââ
âThe person you desire the most,âshe finished impatiently. âI know that, Steve! But what does that have to dowith⌠wait, are you in love with me?â
âNo! God, no! I mean, youâregreat, butâŚâ
âI get it, Cap, jeez!â Shecrossed her arms and regarded both men shrewdly. âSo then, Tony saw Pepper andThor must have seen Jane⌠correct?â
âNot quite. Thor is a demigod.Heâs immune to Sirens. And I was in my Iron suit. It protected me from theircharms.â
Darcy frowned. âOkay. What aboutthe others?â
âThe Hulk doesnât desire anyone, nor does Romanoff, which,â Tony turned to Steve with a pout, âwas a missedopportunity. Now Iâm wondering if sheâs a cyborg.â
Steve rolled his eyes. âWomen areimmune to Siren magic, Tony. Donât be an ass.â His tone changed then, as he spokesoftly, âI saw Peggy. She was beautiful. She swam out of the water and took myhand.â Steve gulped. âBut I snapped out of the enchantment when Tony punched meand reminded me sheâs dead.â
âYouâre welcome, by the way,â sangTony. âOtherwise sheâd have pulled you right into the ocean with Barnes.â
Darcyâs gaze flicked from one manto the other as they spoke, her brain working full time to process all this newand incredible information. Needing a moment to sort everything out, she tunedout the conversation and focused her energy on what Steve and Tony wereultimately trying to tell her.
She thought she knew. It scaredher a bit, but she was beginning to get an inkling of where this conversationwas headed and how she was involved. Butterflies erupted in her stomach at themere idea of it, giant butterflies, ones that only took flight when a certainsuper soldier was around.
âWe donât really know who theSiren turned into to hypnotize Clint,â Steve was saying when Darcy focused onhim again.
âI heard him call her Laura,âsupplied Tony, sounding intrigued. âWhoâs Laura?â
They stood in thought for a momentbefore Steve placed a gentle hand on Darcyâs shoulder, his blue eyes earnest. âIthink you know now why youâre here.â
âY-yeah.â She looked hesitantlyat the door. âAre they in there?â
Steve nodded. âThe Siren is theretoo, but sheâs beyond the glass pane. Imprisoned. Donât⌠donât look at her.â
Tony waved off his advice andremarked, âYou can check her out if you want, but since she refuses to changeforms, itâll be a bizarro parent trap kinda situation, so try not to freakout.â He opened the door and stepped aside to let her in.
Darcy found herself in a smallprivate ward with three beds lining the opposite wall. To her right lay anunconscious Clint, bruised and battered, with his leg in a cast. She watchedhim for a moment, her heart heavy. Suddenly, the latest mission didnât seem socool anymore. It had evidently been dangerous and exhausting. And Clint seemedto have gotten the short end of the stick. The Sirens had done one hell of anumber on him.
âDarcy?â
She jumped slightly and turned tosee Bucky sitting on a bed, shirtless, his metal hand resting just above a longred gash on his abdomen. He looked alarmed to see her. âWho let you in?â
Darcy stepped closer, her eyestrained on his injury. An inch of it, at the top, had healed already and thescar it left behind was pink and swollen. She was about to ask him how he wasfeeling when a movement to her left caught her eye.
âDonâtâŚâ Bucky began but it wastoo late. Darcy had already whipped around and was now gaping openly at thesight before her.
âWoah,â she murmured, momentarilyforgetting about Bucky and going to stand before the glass pane. If she didnâtknow any better, she would have thought she was looking into a mirror.
The woman on the other sidelooked just like her. Same blue-green eyes, pouty lips, flowing dark hair⌠eventhe expression on her face reflected Darcy on a typical day, bored and ready todish out a sarcastic comment at the drop of a hat.
Still, there was something about her. A certain glow, that Darcylacked. She wore rags which she plucked and pulled at, clearly wanting to getrid of them. But someone, one of the Avengers perhaps, had strapped twin beltsaround her frame to hold the rags in place and to keep her from strippingnaked. Darcy flushed, thinking about one of the guys covering her bare bodywith the fabric. It was embarrassing to think someone wearing her skin had pranced naked in front ofthe mighty Avengers.
Muffled sound of Bucky callingher name reached her ears but Darcy couldnât take her eyes off of herself. Sheidly wondered if Sirens could bewitch, not just men but, women too. Withoutthinking, she raised a hand and placed it on the thick sheet of glassseparating them. The Sirenâs lips moved but no sound came out. The glass was probablysound proof.
For a moment, it looked like shewould imitate the action and place her palm over Darcyâs, but the next second, she lunged at the glass, her lips pulled back over her sharp, animal-like teethin a seemingly silent growl.
Darcy shrieked and jumped back, colliding with something solid. Heart hammering in her chest, she tore her gazeaway from her scary clone and turned to find Bucky standing behind her.
âAre you all right?â
âDude,â she breathed, clutchinghis arm tightly. âWhy did the Siren take on my image to try and seduce you?â
Bucky looked pained, like he wasfighting with himself and didnât know how to respond.
âIs there something you wannatell me?â Darcy pressed, willing him to speak.
She was nervous and excited to hear his confession. Inall the months she had known him, not once had he given any indication that hedesired her as more than a friend. He hung out with her whenever they ran intoeach other, but never went out of his way to seek her. He was also veryunapologetic about leaving abruptly when he wasnât in the mood to be around heror anyone else.
Jane had once remarked that hiseyes followed Darcy whenever they were in the same room. Her off-hand remarkhad been waved aside, presumed false and possibly a product of her vividimagination. But maybe she had been right. Darcy was always so focused on not staring at Bucky for too long thatshe hadnât realize he noticed her too.
Now, as she stared hopefully intohis slightly glassy eyes, she cursed herself for how blind sheâd been.
âYou should leave.â His gruffvoice, low with restraint, popped her growing bubble of happiness and Darcylooked at him, confused.
âWhat?â
âGo. Now,â Bucky practicallybegged and Darcyâs heart sank.
âYeah, okay.â He was embarrassed, that was it. Maybe he was ashamed of wanting her. Or maybe he didnât reallywant her and the Sirenâs magic was flawed; it had shown him Darcy instead ofsomeone else.
She stumbled away from him, feeling utterly stupid. âCool. Itâs all cool, Barnes. I⌠I wonât ever bring itup, if thatâs what you want.â
She turned around and fled theroom, slamming the door shut behind her. Everyone outside had left, exceptSteve and Natasha, who were standing in a corner with Steve slumped against thewall and Natasha whispering something fast in his ear. At one point, she pulledher hand back and slapped him hard.
âSnap out of it,â Darcy heard hersay before she stepped into the elevator and let it whisk her away from thecraziness.
âoâ
That evening, Thor brought thelimp body of an unfamiliar woman into the lab.
âWhat the hell?â Darcy exclaimed, rolling her chair far away and making a face at Jane.
The astrophysicist lookedapologetic. âThis is why Steve had to tell you about her,â she said. âSo youwouldnât freak out when Thor brought her here.â
Darcy had no idea what Jane was talkingabout. âWho is she?â
When she got no answer, only twinexpressions of âtake a guess, why donât you?â realization dawned and Darcyâsgaze snapped back to the unconscious woman who looked nothing like her. She had ginger hair, dry thin lips, and skin thecolor of lichen.
âWhy does she look like that?âshe asked Thor.
âItâs her original form,â heexplained. âI assumed seeing her awake would upset you, like it did earlier.âDarcy wondered how he knew. âTherefore I requested the Midgardian healer todrug her. Following that, she naturally changed back into her original form.â
âWhatever.â Darcy sniffed. âWhydid you bring her here?â
Jane cleared a table far awayfrom the important equipment. âBruce wanted me to run some tests on her beforeThor takes her back to Asgard. Are you going to stay and help?â
âNot if youâre planning tomutilate her for science.â At the horrified look on Janeâs face, Darcy quicklybacktracked. âJoke. âTwas a joke, Janey.â
She watched Thor lay her down onthe table, then asked quietly, âIs Bucky okay now?â
Thor nodded and regarded herseriously. âAre you?â
Darcy broke into a reluctantgrin. âPfft. Iâm alive and kickinâ, big guy. Never been better. Tell me, whatdo I have to do? Remove an eyeball, pluck out all her hair, superglue her fingerstogetherâŚ?â
Jane huffed. âLetâs start withtaking a sample of her blood, shall we?â
Two minutes in, Darcy exclaimedtriumphantly, âLook at that, her blood is green. Told you thereâs somethingwrong with her.â
âDarcy, focus.â
âHer magic is clearly flawed. TheAvengers were duped.â
âoâ
The Siren incident turned herentire life upside down. She couldnât meet Steveâs eyes or Bruceâs orNatashaâs, knowing that they had seen her naked, watched her attack them and mercilesslypull one of their friends underwater. She couldnât talk to them freely withoutwondering if theyâd be triggered by the sight of her.
She knew it hadnât been her. They knew it, too. But Darcy stillcouldnât reconcile with the fact that a monster had taken her form to seduce anAvenger.
âI donât understand whatâs soupsetting about this,â Tony wondered when he visited Janeâs lab a few dayslater and saw Darcy moping around. âShouldnât you be happy Barnes is warm foryour form? Granted, heâs a first class jerk most of the time but heâs an okayguy overall.â
Out of all the Avengers, Tonyseemed to have moved past the incident really fast. Darcy didnât know if itdisturbed her or endeared him to her. These days, he was more open to herinterference in his life and had started calling her Darcy instead of Lewis. Itfelt nice. He didnât judge her, didnât look at her like she had betrayed himsomehow. Well, neither did the others, but Darcy couldnât help but feel herpresence made them uncomfortable.
âTony,â she sighed, shooting hima halfhearted glare. âFirst of all, heâs not a jerk. Second of all, you donâtunderstand what Iâm going through.â
âYouâre thinking too much, Darcy.Stop assuming things and get out of this stuffy lab once in a while. Okay?â
âOkay.â
âGood.â He winked as he left.âNow forget about the Siren and see the bright side.â
Darcy moaned and thunked her headon her desk. There was nothing bright or positive about what had happened. Sheblamed Steve for telling her about the Siren. Making her think, for a few shorteuphoric moments, that Bucky Barnesdesired her. Clearly he didnât, and was just as disturbed as she was about itall.
In a bid to clear the air withher, he had taken to showing up at the most unexpected moments. When she washaving breakfast in the kitchen with Thor and Jane. When she was returning fromher afternoon coffee run. When she snuck up to the communal floor to relax whenno one was around.
Darcy knew he was deliberatelyseeking her out. She knew because, while previously she had a hard time findinghim whenever she wanted to hang out, now he was everywhere! He even went so faras to send her a box of her favorite cookies with a small note attached thatread Iâm sorry. We need to talk.
But Darcy wasnât stupid. If allhe wanted to say was sorry, that the Siren incident had been a terrible mistakeand Darcy shouldnât have been there in the first place, then she had nointerest in talking to him whatsoever. In fact, he had nothing to apologize for. None of what had happened was his fault.Seeing the Siren take Darcyâs form had caused everyone to jump to false conclusionswithout a single consideration of thefact that the darned sea witch could have made a mistake.
It was the reason why Darcywasnât ready to face Bucky, wasnât ready to hear him say sorry. She didnât wanthis pity. Nor was she keen to see the rejection in his eyes. Again.
No. Staying away was the bestoption.
With that thought in mind, shebegan to avoid him. She left the kitchen when he showed up, changed directions whenshe glimpsed him in the distance, avoided the communal floor, ignored his calls, and tossed the box of cookies to Jane, not before snagging a cookie for herselfand stomping up to her room to sulk. Howwas this her life?
Sheâd have to tell Steve to tellBucky to get off her back. She knew what he wanted to say. He didnât have to freakingspell it out to her!
âoâ
âJane, can I have the eveningoff?â
âWhy?â
âIâm sick.â Darcy faked a cough.
Jane looked skeptical. âNice try.Why do you really want the eveningoff?â
Darcy sighed and spouted anotherlie. âI have a date.â
Instead of smiling and giving herthumbs up like she always did, Jane frowned. âWith whom?â
âYou donât know him.â
âDoes Bucky know?â
Her heart skipped a beat at themention of his name but Darcy had successfully learned to control her reactionsover the past few days. âWhy would I tell him about my love life?â she saidcasually, taking her phone and getting to her feet. âIâll see you tomorrow,âkay?â
âDarcy!â Jane called after her.âWhat about dinner tonight with the Avengers? You canât miss that.â
Watch me, she wanted to retort, but she merely grinned and said,âSorry, Jane. Next time.â
A week ago, Darcy would havejumped at the chance to hang out with the Avengers. Now, it was exactly thekind of thing she was looking to avoid. It wasnât the only reason why shewanted the evening off, though. The day before, Bucky had wandered onto the labfloorâwithout warning!âand, forget facing him like a grown-ass woman would,Darcy didnât even have the courage to smile and make some excuse to leave. No. Shehad chickened out and had hid behind the generator until he went away.
She had a feeling he would comeagain. He had never invaded her work space before, so she felt particularlyannoyed about it. Especially since every time she saw him, a thrill shotthrough her system and her heart rate quickened. She hated herself for it.
âDarcy, Darcy, Darcy,â she scoldedherself tiredly, kicking shut the door to her apartment and throwing herself onthe couch. âYou canât run forever⌠canât take every evening off⌠canât go hereâŚcanât go there⌠all because of a stupid Siren.â
She lay there for goodness knewhow long, her blank stare tracing indistinct patterns on the ceiling, until theabrupt sound of the doorbell broke her out of her reverie.
âUn momento,â she called, dragging her feet to the door and pulling it open. Only to gasp and slam itshut again.
But before she could shut itcompletely, five metal fingers curled around the edge and pushed the door openwith ease. Shocked and more than a little angry at the intrusion, Darcy scowledat Bucky when he stepped in and carefully closed the door behind him. His eyeswere trained on hers and his gait was determined as he slowly advanced on her.
His voice, when he spoke, wascool, restrained. âHow long did you think you could avoid me?â
Darcy bristled at his tone, herprevious reservations about talking to him forgotten. âYou were the one whotold me to leave,â she bit out. âI was simply following orders.â
âWhat do you want me to do?â she demanded, crossing her arms defensively. âSit through your baseless apology and then goour separate ways?â
He gave her an incredulous look. âIsthat what you think I want?â
âWhy else would you follow me allaround the tower if not to apologize for something that isnât even your fault?I get that youâre embarrassed but you have nothing to be sorry for.â
âWhatâno, thatâs not at all whyI wanted to talk to you!â
Darcy scoffed. âWhy, then? âCauseIâm pretty sure it wasnât just to tell me my hair smells good.â
âIt does smell good,â Bucky said quietly, blue eyes momentarilydropping to the locks of hair resting over the swell of her breast.
Darcy faltered, sidetracked bythe sudden shift in conversation. âUm,â she fumbled, blinking rapidly. Hewasnât supposed to look at her like that. It was making her forget what she wantedto say.
âDarce,â Bucky said, takingadvantage of her temporary speechlessness. âYou have no idea what happened that day. Please donât presumeââ
âNo,â Darcy said immediately. Shelooked at him, eager to make him understand. âI know what happened. Jane and I figured it out. Itâs not your faultthe Sirenâs enchantment was crappy. She clearly made a mistake with you.â
âWhat are you on about?â Buckygrumbled. âShe didnât make any goddamn mistakes! In fact, she did her jobexceptionally well if the fading scar on my torso is any indication.â
Darcy shook her head vehemently.âBut her magic was flawedâŚâ
At her words, he shot her a lookof utter disbelief. âIs that what you tell yourself to ease your misplacedhurt? Jesus, Darcy, whatâs wrong with you?â He started to pace, his movementsquick and jerky. âThat day, when I told you to leave, I wasnât rejecting you.â
âBucky, itâs okay. I donâtââ
âNo, you need to hear this!â heinsisted.
Darcy clamped her mouth shut andnodded for him to continue.
âThat day, when you came in, theSiren⌠she recognized you.â
âWell, of course she did!â
âShut up for a minute, will you?â
âFine.â
Bucky huffed and went on, âThemoment she saw you, she started⌠humming.â
âHumming?â But she hadnât heard asingle peep out of the Siren.
âYeah. It was faint, not likewhen we were at sea, where the music was loud, clear and near impossible toresist.â Buckyâs eyes glazed over as he spoke and Darcy listened to him, stunned into silence. âIt was chaos. The Sirens were powerful and unrelenting. They each picked one of us as their target and didnât back down until eitherthey were dead or we were in the sea with them. Stark may have gotten over itquickly but I know he was scared shitless when Steve succumbed to theenchantment.â
Hearing Bucky recite the fullstory made Darcy suddenly realize how much the mission had affected him. Shehad been so engrossed in her own concerns, she hadnât stopped to think aboutwhat the Avengers had been through. She remembered the state of Dr. Bannerâsclothes that day, the bandage wrapped around Natashaâs forearm, Clintâs brokenleg in a cast, the quiet look on Steveâs face when he had mentioned Peggy.
She also recalled Natasha hittingSteve, telling him to âsnap out of itâ. At the time, Darcy hadnât paidattention to them. But now she knew. Like Bucky, Steve was hearing the musictoo.
âIt was a sound proof ward Starklocked her in,â Bucky continued. âBut a hint of that godforsaken tune slipped throughsomehow. It was distracting. I was hurt and you were there⌠and I couldnâtconcentrate⌠andââ
Before he could say another word,Darcy stepped closer and placed a hand on his cheek to stop him. Sheâd heardenough. She didnât want any more explanations.
âItâs okay,â she whispered, grazing her fingers down his face. The bristles on his cheek felt deliciousagainst the soft skin of her palm. âI get it.â
He covered her hand with his andbrought it to rest over his heart. âI wasnât rejecting you, Darcy. I justdidnât want you to see me at my weakest.â
âOkay,â Darcy said simply, ignoring the sudden burst of hope that filled her chest at his words. âIthought you didnât want me,â she added in a small voice.
Bucky raised a hand to tuck alock behind her ear, his fingers combing through her hair before coming to cupher neck. âYou thought wrong.â
Darcy swayed closer to him, reveling in the tiny sparks of electricity his touch elicited. She caughtherself wishing she had approached him sooner, cleared everything upinstead of avoiding him like a coward. They had wasted so much time playinghide and seek.
Her eyes dropped to his mouth. Shereally wanted him to kiss her, she knew he wantedto, but he made no such move. He just stood there and looked at her like shewas the most amazing thing in the world.
âI tried so hard to stay awayfrom you,â he murmured, leaning down to brush his lips over her forehead. âIreally did.â
âWhy?â Darcy breathed, closingher eyes when he pressed light kisses over her eyelids.
âI didnât think I was ready for arelationship.â His lips moved down her cheek, as slow as ever. âI didnât thinkyouâd want one with me anyway.â
âBecause youâre the WinterSoldier?â
âMm-hmm.â He smiled against herjaw when he felt her wrap her arms around his waist and pull him flush againsther.
âI think the Winter Soldier ispretty cool,â Darcy teased. âItâs Bucky Barnes whoâs an idiot.â
Bucky huffed out a laugh. âNotgonna argue with that, doll.â
âGood. Now, are you planning to kissme soonâŚâ Darcy stretched up on her tiptoes until her lips were a hairâsbreadth away from his. âOr do I have to place an enchantment on you?â
âNo, maâam, once is enough,âBucky replied with a grin, leaning down and capturing her lips in a sound kiss.
So, maybe Tony was right. Maybe there was abright side to the Siren incident after all.
Tell me what you wish me to write. I just might write it.

Darcy was exploring a lively Bucharest market the first time she saw him. He was haggling with a merchant over the price of some type of fruit, which wasnât out of the ordinary here. But what drew her eye was that he kept shifting anytime someone walked by him, like he couldnât stand to have his back unprotected. Maybe too many world disasters had left her paranoid, but she had a weird feeling about him. And then he turned and caught her staring, and she was swept up in an entirely different kind of feeling.
She felt bad about the staring, she really did, but the man was the most attractive male specimen sheâd seen in monthsâhell, maybe years, or even her entire lifetime. He had a cap pulled low over his face, but she felt his piercing stare all the way across the marketplace. It sent pleasant shivers skittering down her spine, and she decided that even if he was trouble, she wouldnât mind a helping. Or two, or three. She grinned at him, partly in apology and partly because it was impossible not to try and see what a smile would look like on that face.
But instead of returning the gesture, the frown lines around his mouth deepened even further, and he turned back to the vendor. His thumbs hooked around the straps of his backpack as he moved, hitching it protectively up his spine. Darcy shrugged and turned back to her perusal of the handmade jewelry. She couldnât be everyoneâs type, she supposed. Some sabbatical this was turning out to be.
-:-
The next time she saw him, it was at a market across town. It might be more appropriate to say that he saw her, actually; she was hunting through a bin of plums, trying to find the ripe, sweet ones that she loved so much. She was minding her business, trying to remember any advice her mom had given her on testing ripeness, when a quiet voice at her shoulder said, âNot that one. It isnât ripe.â The softly-spoken English startled her so badly she jumped, dropping the plum. A quick hand darted out to catch it as it fell, putting it back in the bin.
It was the beautiful man from before. Sheâd never forget that face.
âExcuse me?â she asked, finally finding her voice. Up close, she could see that his eyes were an electric blue. They bored into her, as if he was dissecting her character, ripping it apart and reassembling the pieces. It was a strange sensation to have, standing over a table of fruit.
He mustâve liked something he saw, because he blinked and his whole posture just seemed toâŚsettle. Stepping inâand wow, that mix of leather and mint was intoxicatingly attractive, making her head swimâhe jerked his chin toward the vendor and murmured near her ear, âThat plum wasnât ripe. And the vendor in this market always overprices his produce.â
He took a step away and paused, clearly expecting her to join him. Zipping up her wallet, she smiled apologetically at the vendorâwho was clearly muttering unflattering things under his breath about the strangerâand stepped away from the table. Oh, what the hell. If she got murdered for this, at least it would be by the hottest guy sheâd ever seen, she thought, and immediately grimaced. The stranger eyed her curiously, like she was a puzzle he couldnât quite figure out.
âSo,â she said, smiling broadly, appreciating the way his eyes flickered down to her mouth for the briefest of moments, âwhere to?â
-:-
They were on their seventh date, and she couldnât keep it in any longer. She considered them dates, at leastâthey were at a table for two in a pretty little bistro, lightly flirting and generally having a good timeâbut she wasnât sure James would put it in those terms. It was hard to know with him, really. She thought of this as the seventh date, but in truth sheâd seen him every day since heâd âsavedâ her from the vendor with the overpriced plums. She hadnât been seeking him out, at first. He always seemed to find her anyway, though, and after a while they made sure to find each other. And now days had turned into weeks, which had turned into several months, and the longer she went without saying anything, the more dishonest she felt.
âPlease donât run away,â she said, drawing his eyes immediately back to her from where heâd been watching the people pass by on the sidewalk, âbut I canât keep pretending I donât know, and I want you to know that you can trust me.â He stiffened, and she knew that his fingers immediately went to grip the straps of his backpack protectively, even if she couldnât see them under the table. It was what he always did when he wanted to run.
He eyed her from across the table, frozen in place and skittish, but didnât get up to leave. She took it as permission to continue. With a heavy sigh, she put her hands palm-up on the table in front of herâa reminder, she hoped, that she had nothing to hideâand wet her lips with her tongue. This had the potential to change everything. She memorized every little detail of his face, just in case she never saw him again after this.
âYouâre Bucky Barnes, arenât you?â She rushed through it as quickly as she could without raising her voice; she knew he wouldnât want to draw any extra attention. And sure enough, he was halfway out of his chair before sheâd even finished the question. Tears burned her eyes. At the same time, though, a weight had been removed from her chest, and she couldnât regret setting it out in the open.
He caught the glimmerâor at least saw something in her faceâand paused, still half-standing. JamesâBucky, she realized, now she could think of him by his nameâstared at her, frantically searching her expression for something. What, she didnât know, but she kept it open anyway. Heâd been a master at reading her ever since they met.
When he sat back down, the breath whooshed out of her lungs and she felt dizzy. Darcy hadnât let herself think about this as a possible outcome, and the relief went rushing through her. âNot here,â he said, picking at the little white tablecloth. He looked away, gesturing for the waiter, then glanced back at her. âCome to my apartment.â Part of her wondered if this was an elaborate plan to get her out of public and then silence her, but the vulnerability that flickered in his gaze stopped that thought right in its tracks.
âOkay,â she said, mustering up a smile for his sake, ignoring the fluttering in her stomach. Wondering how everything was going to change, she repeated, âOkay.â
Later, after heâd told her everythingâwell, not everything, but enough that she could guessâhe asked her how sheâd known. âI was a political science major, once upon a time,â she said, âand I know almost everything there is to know about Steve Rogers.â She trailed off at the end, seeing the way he flinched at his best friendâs name.
Tears glimmered in his eyes when he cut his gaze back to hers, or perhaps it was a trick of the light. âIâm not that man anymore,â he whispered, flinching away as if he expected to be struck down for saying it out loud.
âI know,â she said, startling his gaze back to hers. Reaching over, she lightly pressed her hand against his. âBut I like who you are now.â
For a moment she wondered if sheâd made a mistake in initiating physical contact, but then his hand slowly turned underneath hers, and he squeezed back.
-:-
Two months later, an old grainy photo of him was shown on TV, in connection to some kind of catastrophe at the UN. When he walked into her little apartment, bearing coffee and the covrigi from that vendor they loved, she was beyond grateful to see him whole and unharmed. âHave you seen?â she asked, not wasting a second.
âYes,â he admitted, tucking a stray lock of hair behind his ear. Sheâd never been happier that heâd allowed her to convince him to shave and sport a man bun; he looked nothing like the picture plastered all over the news. Then his words sank in, and she marveled at the wonder of it. Heâd seen the news, and she knew heâd thought about running. And yet here he was, with her, bringing breakfast as planned. Her heart surged with emotion, and she smiled at him.
He smiled back, tentatively, like he didnât know what heâd done to deserve it. âI think itâs time to contact your best friend,â she suggested, ripping off the band-aid.
Bucky froze, then nodded. âYouâre right,â he said, setting the coffee down on the table. He reached for his backpack, and she wondered what sheâd said wrong.
âSo how do we go about finding him?â she asked, rushing through the question, catching him before he could leave. âFor someone who wears such an eye-catching outfit, he doesnât seem that easy to pin down.â
Still frozen in place, he said nothing. Waving a hand in front of his face, she prompted, âBucky? Everything okay?â
Clearing his throat, he asked, âYouâre coming with me?â She watched as he mouthed the words again silently, like he couldnât quite believe it.
âOf course,â she said, smiling at him tenderly. âWho else is gonna keep you out of trouble?â
She didnât even see him move; one second he was stock still, staring at her, and in the next his mouth was on hers, his hands were in her hair, and his heart was in her hands. It was messy and emotional and perfect. And when his lips parted she didnât hesitate to follow suit, opening up to him. Their tongues slid against each other in a desperate, perfect harmony. She didnât ever want to let him go.
âIâm sorry,â he groaned, breaking the kiss and taking a hesitant step back. She blinked, reaching for him before she even understood the words. Her hand landed on his shoulder, and he didnât move away.
She was still panting, and it took a second for her to gather the breath necessary to ask, âWhy?â Confusion coated the single syllable, made even worse by the fact that she was staring at the evidence of her kiss on his mouth. Of desire on his face, obvious in the flush of his cheeks and the brightness of his eyes.
Gesturing with his metal arm, he said, âLook at me, doll. Iâm a half a man. Are you sure you wanna be with someone as damaged as me?â
That didnât deserve an answer with words, so she didnât give him any. She answered with her mouth instead. It was a demanding, passionate kiss, where she poured out her heart and soul and received his in return. He was grasping her by the end of it, the strength of his hold at direct odds with his offer to let her go.
âYouâre not a half of anything, James Buchanan Barnes,â she growled, staring him right in the eye. âAnd I donât want to be with anyone but you.â
His whole body relaxed at her words and his face softened. He pressed the lightest of kisses to her forehead in apology, and whispered against her hair, âI donât think I could let you go now anyway, Darce. One day, Iâm gonna be the man you deserve.â
âTo start,â she said, leaning back to make eye contact, âletâs go find the brave fool you call your best friend. The sooner we do that, the sooner we can get to our happy ending.â
âFirst thing weâre gonna do,â he said, dragging her to the table with a chuckle, âis eat our breakfast, doll.â

To say she was tired would be an understatement.
Hell, to say she was exhausted wouldnât even really hit the nail on the head.
If Darcy had to pick a word for how she felt, sheâd pick spectral. Â Because she was only alive in the strictest sense. Her brain had long since been asleep, drooling on her pillow and snuggled under a down comforter beside her diffuser which was going strong with the scent of lavender.
But her body was still chugging along, fueled by coffee and the express ability to not be surprised by literally any bullshit that came her way.
Never mind that she couldnât properly mourn people. Friends. Â Close friends whoâd died protecting her and everyone else on this entire planet. Â Or that the planet, after having been operating at fifty-percent population for five years, was suddenly full to bursting again.
But her job as Avengers PR Agent, which had been fairly non-existent for five years, with the exception of checking in with Natasha every so often, was suddenly the boomingest business in town. And now there was no Natasha to check in with⌠but she couldnât really think about that right now.
Sheâd been doing press conferences for everyone. Â Reporters at barebones newspapers, TV stations, hell, even bloggers. Â The general public was her biggest audience, and they apparently felt better hearing her repeat the same news over and over again over a booming mic in Central Park than they did watching a recording on television.
But this was her last interview. The last one before she could go home to her empty apartment and sleep for the foreseeable future.
Sheâd rather curl up in bed with her super-speedy boyfriend and their collection of abandoned dogs and cats that theyâd accrued over the years, but sheâd settle for her animals, who sheâd only seen in the mornings and in the evenings when she fed them.
Pietro wouldnât be back for a while yet. Â Or so she assumed. Â Cell service was patchy, and she hadnât really heard from him other than when he checked in after the big battle.
If she thought about him too much, she wouldnât be able to function. Â The key to functioning was no thinking, only word vomit.
Darcy arrived at the radio station with a few minutes to spare. Â Trish Walker, who looked about like Darcy felt, waved her in and started introducing her immediately.
Darcy didnât mind doing Trishâs show, in fact, sheâd done it a lot before the snap. Afterward, there wasnât really anything to report⌠but when Trishâs number showed up on her phone, she knew she had to make time.
And she graciously answered all the questions, pushed the cough button when she had to yawn, and thought she saw a blur of blue and black in the window outside the sound booth, but chalked it up to her lack of sleep.
Except she kept seeing it.
And then she saw him. Standing there in the window. Â Pietro waved, grinned widely, and pointed to the speakers. He gave her a thumbs-up, and for the first time in the past three days, Darcy almost burst into tears.
Of relief. Â She hadnât realized how much not seeing her favorite goober made her shoulders tense up.
Trish noticed a change in her demeanor and squinted out into the other room, a smile coming to her face. Â âLooks like we need to cut this short. Our favorite PR manager looks like sleep on a stick, but weâre super glad to have you here, Darcy.â
âThanks, Trish. Â Anytime, and I mean it.â
Trish winked and waved her off. Â And Darcy turned, almost forgot to remove her headset, and after removing it, practically ran out of the booth.
He met her halfway, wrapping both arms around her and hugging her close. âI saw you on the internet,â he said, whispering softly as she burst into tears against his chest.
âComing from anyone else, Iâd almost be offendedâŚâ she joked, tears clogging up her usual candor.
âI meant on a news site,â he clarified. âI certainly hope all the other videos are for my eyes onlyâŚâ
Darcy laughed. And then sobbed. Â And then laughed again, looking up into his eyes. Â She brought both hands to either side of his face and tugged him down for a kiss. Â A long kiss where she tried to talk in the middle of it, but gave up because she just didnât want to stop kissing him yet.
âIâm so glad youâre okay. Â Thank you for coming back,â she murmured.
âYou think that oversized grape-man could keep me away?â Pietro scoffed. âNever. Iâd like to see him try to keep us apart.â
âThe cats and dogs missed you.â
âWhat about the rabbit?â
She shrugged. âHe was unphased. I dunno, man.â
âWhat about you?â he asked, clearly pushing for more shmoop. Â If he wanted shmoop, he was going to get it.
âI havenât slept in three days, and Iâm considering making it three days and one hour,â she said, waggling her eyebrows.
âOnly one hour?â he asked, slipping his arm around her waist and leading her to the door. âI could go for two.â
âI give you permission to go for two. Â But I can only promise one,â she replied, her eyelids already growing heavy as he led her from the building.
âCounteroffer, how about we go home, sleep for a solid ten, and go for three in the morning?â he suggested.
âHave I told you lately that I love you?â Darcy asked groggily.
âNope, but I already know,â Pietro replied. âLove you more.â
âYouâre only getting away with that because Iâm exhausted. I clearly love you more.â
Pairing: Â Darcy Lewis/Sam Wilson
For:Â @hollyspacey
Prompt: Â Hubba Hubba
Rating: T
Word Count: 790
"Hubba hubbaâŚ" Sam muttered under his breath as he passed behind Darcy.  Out of all the faces she'd seen show up at this shindig, Sam's was the only one that made her stomach flutter on the wings of a billion butterflies.
Weird how SHIELD couldn't muster up anyone else of importance for this Smithsonian fundraiser, and then suddenly the freaking Falcon shows up out of the blue.
She spoken to him since he'd arrived, he'd been talking to a senator or something over by the Captain America exhibit. Â Â
She'd been hoping against hope that maybe he was here because she was. Â But until he'd uttered those 'words' under his breath, she couldn't be sure.
Pressing her lips together in a desperate attempt to avoid snorting the champagne she'd just drunk, Darcy turned to face him. Â "I know you didn't just mutter 'hubba hubba' at me, Mr. Wilson." Â
He arched his eyebrow deftly. Â "You must have misheard me, then. Because I most definitely did." Â
"I take it, at least you are enjoying my night interred in formal wear," she mused, downing the rest of the champagne and placing the glass on one of the many tables situated around the room. Â
"Don't get me wrong, Darce, you idle at jaw-dropping, but that dress is just⌠damn girl." Â
Her cheeks warmed significantly. Â "I will accept that compliment." Â
"Let me know if you need anymore of them, I've got a few saved up for a rainy day," he countered, offering his arm. "And you look like you wanna get some air."Â
She accepted his arm. "This had better not turn into some impromptu flying lessons again." Â
He snickered. "Have you seen me tonight? There isn't any spare room in this suit for anything, let along my wings." Â
They strolled into another room, walking past the familiar exhibits swiftly on their way to the front doors. Â
"So why are you here, Sam?" Darcy asked, her hand sweating on his very nice tux as she tried to muster up the courage to keep up with all the flirting. Â
"Thought that was obviousâŚ" he said softly, stopping in the middle of the 'Women of World War I' exhibit. He took both of her hands in his, pulling them up to his lips briefly. "There was a bet." Â
Sighing heavily, Darcy dropped her hands from his and started to go back in the direction they'd come from. "Unbelievable." Â
Laughing, he jogged after her. "Hey, don't you want to know what the bet was? Â Before you get all mad at me and everything?" Â Â
She stopped, huffing as she turned to face him. "Fine. What was the bet?" Â
"I wasn't involved, but I heard about itâŚ" he started. "Rogers was betting Barnes that you were 'sweet on me'..." He paused here to roll his eyes at the archaic terminology.  "And Barnes was betting Rogers and Barton that it was me who was⌠warm for your form."  He winked. Â
"So you're here to find out if a bunch of super dorks have to trade five dollar bills." Â
"Nah, Barnes already won. I just need to find out if Rogers has any claim here as well." Â He raised his eyebrows quizzically, grinning so wide that it was impossible not to smile back. Â "Does he?" Â
Darcy felt her cheeks reddening again as she nodded. "Yeah. Â Yeah. Tell Cap he does." Â
"I will.  First thing after I get back to New York.  But uh⌠while I'm here? You wanna blow this extra-long nap-athon and go get some food that's not in miniature?" Â
"Okay," she agreed. Â "First, I'd like to kiss you, though." Â She stepped closer to him, wrapping her arms up over his shoulders. Â The one good thing about the three-inch heels she was wearing was that it made it possible to reach Sam's lips without pulling him down too much. Â
"Baby, you know that was definitely first on my list, too, right?" he asked, touching his forehead to hers.
She closed the distance, pressing her lips firmly to his and feeling the air leave her lungs as his arms slid around her waist, holding her fast to his front. Â If she wasn't blushing before, she was now. Â Good goddamn, could this man kiss! Â
His hand spanned her lower back, fingers splayed across all the bare skin that her gown allowed. Â Which was kind of a lot. This was a fundraiser, not a Catholic school dance, after all.
There was no room for Jesus between them. And definitely no room for him in this gown with her either.
Sam's hand was hot against her skin and she moved infinitesimally closer, breaking off the kiss with a soft pop. She ran her fingertips over his lips, grinning widely the whole time.
