Prompts: TaserWings, walking in a winter wonderland, presents
“Too much winter wonderland!” Darcy panted, struggling through the deep snow carrying stacks of presents. She and Sam had rented a cozy chalet for Christmas with Sarah and Bucky and it had a breathtaking view and great amenities. The drawback was mostly that Darcy, being of short stature, struggled getting through the snow, which unfortunately had drifted a lot.
“Follow my trail,” Sam instructed. “I’ll play human snowplow. Man, this stuff is deep. Bucky texted they’re getting close and then I’ll put him to work shoveling.”
“I’m sure he’ll love that,” Darcy laughed, breath rising up in a puff of steam. “Aww, that’s so much better,” she added. “My short legs were not made for this. Thanks, babe.”
Sam reached the porch, unlocked the door, and took the presents from Darcy, ushering her inside.
“It’s beautiful!” She proclaimed, admiring the lavish Christmas decorations. “So nice to not have to do all that work, for once.”
“Amen to that,” Sam agreed.
As they unpacked and got settled, Darcy snooped around the little mound of presents piled underneath the tree.
“Hey, hey, now,” Sam warned, coming up behind her as she was caressing a beautifully wrapped box. “No peeking, or Santa won’t come.”
“Ugh. But I can’t wait!” Darcy sighed dramatically. “I’ve been a good girl this year. Isn’t there just one little present I can open to ride me over?”
Sam pretended to ponder this, then suddenly pursed his lips and nodded, with a mysterious smile.
“I might have just the thing. I’ll be right back.”
He disappeared into one of the bedrooms and emerged with a small wrapped box.
“I was going to wait a little longer, but I think right now is just fine.”
“They say the best things come in small packages.” Darcy said, gently tearing the paper off.
She let out a gasp as she opened up the box to reveal a stunning diamond ring.
“Sam! OMG!”
He was kneeling in front of her, grinning enticingly.
“Will you marry me, Dr. Darcy Lewis?”
“With pleasure, Samuel Wilson!” she answered enthusiastically before flinging herself into his arms. “Now that’s what I call a Christmas present!”

Perhaps it was an overly bold strategy to park herself under mistletoe while her Timer ticked down, but Darcy, ever the hopeful, decided to give it a try. It was just an ordinary sprig of mistletoe hung up in her favorite book store by the romance section, but to her it was the perfect symbolic item to oversee her meeting her soulmate. So there she stood, browsing the latest hot new releases, imagining what the moment would be like.
A man turned the corner down the aisle she was standing in and nearly ran into her.
“I’m sorry ma’am, I wasn’t paying attention….” he started, then saw the large flashing zero on her arm.
“Oh, wow.” He looked at his arm and then back at Darcy and suddenly smiled a blindingly beautiful smile. “I almost ran down my own soulmate.”
She smiled back. Gosh, he was handsome. Dark eyes, strong shoulders and definitely the athletic type.
“Hi, I’m Darcy,” she greeted. “And it totally would have been worth it if you HAD run me over.”
He grinned and shook her hand.
“And I’m Sam. Nice to meet you, and in the romance section no less. I was rushing here to get a book for my sister’s Christmas present, thought I still had an hour left on the Timer, but I look down and it’s going off.”
“Fate works in mysterious ways,” Darcy said happily. Sometimes it even provides mistletoe.”
She pointed above her head.
Sam grinned at her. “I like the way you think, Darcy.”
The caroler’s voices made for a festive background for holiday festival goers, but two of them had an ulterior motive and were people watching a little more purposely than their fellow vocalists.
Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes were deep undercover in a covert mission to find out who Darcy Lewis was seeing on the down low.
They’d tried asking nicely, they’d tried wheedling it out of her, they’d tried bribery and trickery. Nothing had got her to crack, so they’d taken matters into their own hands. Having overheard Darcy tell Natasha she was going to the Christmas festival with with her man, the plan was set in motion to clear things up once and for all.
The victorian garb the group wore made a perfect disguise and both had passable singing voices, so they blended in well.
Towards the end of Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Bucky nudged Clint. Darcy was strolling toward them hand in hand with a very muffled up man. It was hard to tell who he was, but when they stopped right in front of the carolers, they recognized him. It took every bit of concentration for Bucky to stay in character, but he was already planning Sam’s “demise”.
“How long do you think we have before our friends figure out we’re married?” Darcy asked, when they’d moved on to get hot chocolate.
“Depends on how impatient Natasha gets,” Sam answered. “I honestly thought she would have found it all out by now.”
“Maybe she did and she’s just being respectful,” Darcy suggested. “I appreciate having had you to myself for the last two months.”
She grinned up at him with that adoring little smirk that made his heart beat faster.
“And I very much appreciate you, sweetheart,” Sam told her, leaning down to give her a kiss.
“What the heck?”
“Holy crap!!”
The twin exclamations had Sam and Darcy reluctantly turning to face a stunned looking Clint and Bucky. Looking back on it later Darcy didn’t know what made her laugh harder: the looks on their faces, or their outfits.
“Clint, Bucky, meet my husband.” She declared, when she’d managed to get herself under control enough to talk. Sam was still wheezing.
Darcy’s attempt to lighten the mood was a dismal failure as all of the assembled avengers (plus Jane) fixed her with exasperated stares. Even Clint, who was usually her ally in such situations, looked pissed.
She slowly returned the candy cane to the dish on the table and tried to avoid a certain pair of brown eyes that she knew were glaring at her.
“Darcy, you know I love you, but you can’t go waltzing around a suspected nazi lair without telling someone or at least wearing your tracker device,” Jane scolded. “I thought you’d learn after the last kidnapping.”
“I didn’t KNOW it was a nazi lair, I was admiring the architecture,” Darcy defended. “I have an appreciation for fine houses. They’d never bothered me before. Must have new owners.”
She shrugged, and slumped back in her chair, reapplying the ice pack to her swollen eye.
“Okay, it WAS stupid of me to not wear the earrings. I’m sorry. Thank you for saving me. But can I just tell you how hot it is to get to live out the whole “touch her and die” trope. That was a nice touch and completely unexpected coming from you.”
“I did not say that,” Sam protested, still looking aggrieved at her.
“No, your exact words were, “Lay a finger on her and you won’t live to regret it,” Bucky chimed in with a smirk. “I’ve never been more proud.” He clapped Sam on the shoulder approvingly.
Natasha and Clint stifled their chuckles, but looked extremely amused and Darcy wasn’t sure she liked that gleam in Natasha’s eyes……
“Perhaps we should let them debrief privately, shall we?” Nat suggested sweetly.
Bucky and Clint grinned and followed her out of the room, Clint shooting Darcy a thumbs up sign.
“Subtle, aren’t they?” Sam muttered.
“Like a freight train!” Darcy agreed, slightly nervously.
“I’ve never seen you quite that fierce before,” she continued. “It made me wonder if the rumors are true.”
“What rumors?” Sam asked warily.
“That you might have a little thing for me? But it was probably just Bucky stirring up trouble again. I know how he can be.”
Darcy tried to sound casual, but her hopes were starting to rise and she really wanted to know the truth.
Sam snorted in agreement.
“Trouble should have been his middle name,” he declared, then hesitated for a second before looking back at her.
“But, saying he’s actually right for one, how would you feel about that?”
“I would be pretty damn happy,” Darcy confessed. “I thought maybe I saw signs, but I was afraid I was just imagining it. Then your reaction today….whew….”
She mimed fanning herself and Sam laughed and joined her on the couch.
“I don’t know what came over me, but I sure as hell was not gonna watch those fools hurt you.”
“It infuriated me being tied up. I was so ready to put Nat’s training to good use again,” Darcy pouted, letting him gently examine her bruised eye again.
“This is gonna look pretty gnarly for a few days,” he observed.
“That’s okay. I’ll come up with some interesting stories about it,” Darcy said, smiling with the half of her face that didn’t hurt. “It’ll only add to my awesome aura. I think we’ll be a power couple, honestly. First things, first though, let’s test your hand holding skills.”
“You like Candy corn? That’s it, we’re done!”
Sam dramatically proclaimed, wrinkling his nose as Darcy shoved a handful of the colorful kernels in her mouth.
“You don’t like candy corn? You heathen!” She gasped when she could speak again. “It’s so cute and sweet, like me!”
She smiled innocently at him and Sam shook his head.
“It’s not even in the same galaxy as you.” he demurred, grabbing her free hand as they strolled along the aisles of booths at the harvest festival. It was a perfect fall day and they were relishing the opportunity to relax together and get a break from their taxing jobs. Sam had specifically told Bucky to not call him unless Thanos was resurrected or another world ending emergency came up. Bucky had laughed and told him to go have fun.
“So, is this irreconcilable differences, then?” Darcy teased, squeezing his hand.
“Not quite, but if I catch you with Necco wafers, it’s curtains,” Sam playfully promised.
Darcy made a face and shuddered.
“No worries about that. Those things are vile.”

“Well, this is an interesting dilemma, Captain. Who screwed up the bunking assignments this badly?”
Sam sighed and dropped his duffle on the floor.
“I don’t know, but when I find out, they’re busted down to ensign and put on gamma shift,” he sighed.
“It’s not THAT bad rooming with me,” Darcy playfully retorted. “I’ll have you know that I’m a very good roommate. I don’t snore, I don’t drool, and I don’t hog the blankets.”
“What if I do and I’m just too embarrassed to have you discover it?” he responded, trying hard not to stare at her. Darcy was a civilian scientist aboard the Falcon who was attending a major conference on New Vulcan and apparently, someone on board the ship had failed to request the right amount of rooms.
“I’ve never seen you embarrassed about anything!” she exclaimed, placing her own bag beside the opposite side of the bed. “I promise I won’t tell if you’re a drooler.”
She winked at him saucily and Sam chuckled. This was going to be an interesting night.
As it turned out, Sam’s embarrassing habit was he was a serial cuddler. Darcy woke up to find him wrapped around her like an octopus: a nice, warm, handsome octopus.
“I might just have to finally ask him out,” she thought. “I’m a civilian, so he can’t object on regulations grounds. He seemed to be into me last shore leave. Cuddly is a bonus.”
Commutes were generally boring, especially when one had forgotten one’s earbuds and was deprived of their favorite podcasts. Darcy sighed and started listlessly scrolling through Tinder, alternately giggling and frowning as she swiped left on every profile she saw. She didn’t know why she even bothered. Her dating experiences had not gone well, if they even made it past the first date. She’d made a promise to try for six months, though, and she didn’t have the heart to break it after Natasha, whom she’d made the promise to, passed away.
Swipe. Swipe. Swipe. Swipe. Swipe.
The pickings were truly slim. She sighed.
Swipe. Swipe. Swipe. Oops.
She wrinkled her nose as she accidentally rejected a very attractive profile.
“Ouch, that one stung a little. Not gonna lie.”
Darcy turned and glanced back to the man sitting behind her, who was looking at his phone sadly and was clearly the guy she’d just swiped left on.
Whoa! Her eyes bugged out and she silently thanked Fate for giving her a second chance.
“Sorry, dude,” she addressed him. “That was a complete accident. There were so many nopes, I swiped left out of habit.”
She held up her phone and smiled at him in what she hoped was a non-creepy manner. After a few glances back and forth between her and his phone, he returned her smile.
“Wow. What are the odds?” he exclaimed, shaking his head in wonder. “You must be Darcy?”
“I am,” she confirmed. “I’m afraid I didn’t catch yours before my bumbling finger swiped past.”
“Sam Wilson,” he offered.
Darcy’s eyes widened.
“As in flying Avenging Captain America Sam Wilson?” She asked.
“One and the same,” he admitted a little ruefully.
“No offense, but Why in the world would you need tinder?” Darcy asked, looking him up and down. “I mean, surely you have no shortage of interested parties.”
“A meddling friend set it up for me and I haven’t gotten around to deleting it yet,” he answered. “As for interested parties, it’s been tough getting to know anyone with my job.”
“I imagine it would,” she sympathized. “I too, had mine set up by a nosy friend. I promised her I’d leave it up for six months. Only two more weeks left. Looks like I finally found a gem among the rubbish.”
Sam laughed.
“You might not say that if you knew me. Just ask Bucky.”
Darcy laughed. “Yeah. I’ve heard stories, but I can deal with pranksters. I put up with Clint Barton for months when Jane and I lived in the Tower and I learned quite a few tricks.”
She rubbed her hands together with a fiendish grin and Sam looked impressed.
“But seriously, your character speaks for itself. I wouldn’t be adverse to a meet up sometime.”
“Me neither,” Sam agreed.
The train began to slow as it approached her stop. Hurriedly, she jotted down her number and thrust it into his hand.
“Here. Use wisely. Hopefully I’ll see you around.”
Darcy winked at him and headed for the door. Maybe it was a tad reckless, giving out her number like that, but something told her that she wouldn’t regret it.
Prompt: “Is it fair to say you read the love letter and this means yes?”
Dear Sam,
I’m not normally the letter writing type, but for some reason, when I’m around you I turn into a babbling lunatic or a giddy mess and have to quickly leave the room. I know it looks like I hate you, but I assure you, the opposite is exactly the opposite. I love you, you adorable flying goofball. You had me from that first smolder you leveled at me after you swooped in to save the day when Jane and I were in big trouble eight years ago. I know it’s been a very difficult time for you dealing with Steve leaving and picking up the mantle of Captain America, but you’ve handled it with so much grace. You’re the Captain America this country needs right now and I’m super proud of you. I wish I had asked you out a long time ago, but I chickened out until Bucky spilled the beans to me that I might have a chance with you. (Yes, I know he’s a pain in the ass, but occasionally he has his moments). If he’s wrong and I’m deluding myself, don’t feel bad. I just had to take the chance. For five long years I thought I had lost that chance for good. You’re not allowed to die again, okay?
Anyway, If you do feel the same way, and would like a feisty astrophysicist girlfriend, well, Bucky’s got my number and you can pester it out of him.
Talk to you soon, (hopefully)
Love,
Darcy
P.S. You look incredibly hot in the new suit. :)
Darcy was enjoying a picnic lunch in the small park next to her lab building when there was a whirring noise and a familiar winged figure came in for a landing nearby. She scrambled to her feet as Sam approached her, looking unfairly gorgeous and very intentional. There was a silent look between them and seconds later, Darcy was being thoroughly kissed. Happiness and relief flooded through her as she returned it enthusiastically, having been on pins and needles for the last couple of days since she’d sent the letter.
“I take it you got the love letter and this means yes?” She asked breathlessly.
“That’s a hell, yes,” Sam confirmed, beaming at her so widely, she thought she might melt on the spot.
“Darcy, I’ve been very blind to the signs,” he confessed. “I thought for sure you and that Jimmy Woo had something going on. But that letter changed everything.”
He brushed a lock of hair out of her face and Darcy caught her breath, shivering a little bit.
“I guess being brave does pay off,” she sighed as she was wrapped in a warm hug.
“Darcy, you’re one of the bravest persons I know,” Sam told her affectionately. “I can’t believe I was so clueless for so long. Steve would be giving me a lot of grief right now.”
She laughed.
“Oh, I’ve no doubt he would. I’m sure Bucky will step up in his absence.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “I’m sure he will. Now, where do you want to go for our first date?”
