Video Game REVIEW: Sleeping Dogs- Honor, loyalty, law enforcement, and crime collide in a fantastic action game!
This generation of games has seen the same tried and true styles. Military scenarios, terrorists, shooting, explosions, nuclear weapons, and post-apocalyptic wastelands have been used repeatedly in the last few years. However, this year, there is a game daring to be different: Sleeping Dogs. Sleeping dogs is an ambitious action game set in the open world of the city and province of Hong Kong. It promises thrills, a good story, and a solid foundation of longevity. How does it stack up?
The game is specifically noted for having been a game that was almost cancelled, never to see the light of day. The game was previously in development under the gaming publisher Activision, best known for the annual release of the Call of Duty games. In 2011, after several years in development, Activision cancelled the game. However, shortly after the cancellation, Square Enix, the publishing company responsible for the Final Fantasy franchise, purchased the project. Now, we see the game completed in its current form. Ultimately, its a huge loss for Activision and a big win for UFG and Square Enix.
Deep in Hong Kong lays one of the fiercest gangs in the city, The Triads. One of the most respected and elite of them all is the Son-Un Yee. As their operations continue to threaten the safety of everyone in the city, the HKPD recruits Wei Shen, an undercover officer for the Hong Kong Police Department, or HKPD. Having just recently returned from the United States, Wei quickly gets back to his roots in Hong Kong and successfully infiltrates the gang. However, the deeper he goes into the Son-Un Yee , the lines between friend and foe get more blurry. If Wei is to survive, he must not forget who he is, no matter how dangerous the mission gets.
The story is executed very well and ranks as one of the best that this generation has seen. Players encounter an undercover story filled with intrigue, and mystery but also experiencing the culturally significant themes of loyalty, family, and honor. There are times where you barely remember that Wei is an undercover officer with the purpose of taking down the Son-Un Yee. Sboon, he comes to befriend members of the gang, especially those that grew up with him. He dangerously dangles the line of his work, creating a tense, hooked atmosphere that keeps players gripped to their controllers.
As an open world game, players can travel across the city to partake in side missions and various activities. Many will compare this to the open world juggernaut, Grand Theft Auto. But this is certainly no GTA , even with some vague similarities. As an action game, gamers will fight, shoot, and aggressively drive their way through a variety of missions.
The fighting system is both exciting and simple. Taking the inspiration from various martial arts films, the fighting system in the game allows players to perform swift counter moves and plenty of different environmental attacks. Players can also wield melee weapons for an extra advantage. Wei will always be facing more than two bad guys in fighting situations so being alert pays off. The shooting mechanics are pretty standard but still polished to be swift and exciting. Players wield the typical weapons you would expect but with an added slow motion mechanic and blindfire mechanic to even the odds in fierce firefights. Driving is fast and aggressive. In addition to street races, players will encounter pursuits, both being the hunter and the hunted. Wei can use his guns to take down pursuers or use vehicle melee to disable cars. Wei can also perform an action hijack, a move in which Wei leaps from his car and onto a target vehicle in front of him, commandeering it for himself. The combat and the way it is used ultimately make sleeping dogs a fun and exciting game.
As Wei partakes in various missions, each action is set to a specific skill tree. Partaking in cop missions and avoiding collateral damage undercover lends experience points, or XP, to his cop tree. Violent acts lend XP to the triad tree. Doing favors lends XP to his face level. Each tree has its own set of skills and attributes that grow as the player participates in missions. With plenty of activities to pursue, players will keep themselves busy.
On the technical side, Sleeping Dogs is a culturally vibrant game. The developers specifically went to Hong Kong to learn more about the city, its culture, and read upon stories. You can get the sense that you are really in Hong Kong as you drive in the streets and observe the various signs, bold lighting, and architecture. The radio stations are also licensed and varied. Some stations feature natural Cantonese and others feature British rock and roll as well as modern dance music. Also, player will notice that the driver’s seat is the passenger’s seat and that drivers drive to the left side of the road as opposed to the right side of the road. Visually, the game is sharp with detail, especially with the character animations. The characters are all voiced by natural Cantonese actors and actress, lending the authenticity to the game’s atmosphere. There is also an intricate level of detail in indoor locations and vehicles.
Sleeping Dogs is a unique gem of this year. It’s a game that was effectively slain due to business but resurrected in full strength to become one of the premier action games this year. With the ambitious promise of additional DLC, or downloadable content, to be released over the next 6 months, you certainly want to check this game out. With its varied, three way gameplay, unique setting, and solid story, Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic game.
