Pocket Monsters Red & Green: Charmander's Back Spikes
If you go back to the first generation of Pokémon games, you can see that some of the Pocket Monsters have details that were left in the past.
You may not notice it at first, but Charmander’s original design used to feature tiny spikes on its back.
The original Pokémon games, Pocket Monsters Green and Pocket Monsters Red are known for having some pretty wonky looking sprites, which could incline some to simply process these details as errant pixels.
However, in old comics, promotional materials and merchandise, you can also see these small bumps on Charmander's spine.
In the next two revisions, Pokémon Blue Version & Pokémon Yellow Version, spikes cannot be spotted on Charmander's new front-facing sprites. On the end, Charmander's over-the-shoulder sprite wasn't updated in either re-release, so the spikes can still be seen from that perspective.
With the release of Generation II's Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, the back spikes would forever disappear from Charmander's design in games.
