“Let my son go. He’s done nothing, he’s just an innocent child.”

Chuckling The Joker leans in, grasping her face in one hand as he turns her head side to side examining her twisted features.

“Now, now, didn’t anyone ever tell you that a scowl is a horrible look on a pretty little lady such as yourself?”

The small whimper that slips from her son draws The Joker’s attention. Dropping the woman’s face he moves over to the brunet boy cowering beneath his goon’s gun. 

“How old are ya kid?”

He asks tilting his head to the side waiting for an answer.

“T-twelve.”

The boy manages to chock out bringing a grin to The Joker’s face.

“Twelve huh? Twelve’s a good age very impressionable wouldn’t ‘cha say mama?”

Lowering to his haunches he dismisses the grumble that slips from the angry blonde. Reaching out to brush a lock of fallen hair out of his face the mother barks.

“DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH HIM!”

Sneering at her outburst The Joker’s hand comes across her face with a dizzying force, sending her crashing to the ground, tears filling her eyes. Turns back to the whimpering boy, his features soften in a sad attempt to look friendly.

“Are you frightened of me young man?”

Finally moving the small piece of hair he stares into his wide brown eyes.

“Y-yes.”

The sniffles that emanated from him had The Joker’s skin crawling, but he restrains himself.

“You wanna know what I do when I’m scared kid?”

A small nod brings an evil smirk to his face.

“I smile!” 

Flailing his arms wide he beams down at the boy. 

“Life’s gotcha down? Smile. Had a bad day? Smile. Big bad Clown scarin’ ya? Smile. Mommy’s gone and left you all alone?” 

The brilliant white of his teeth shines just below their crimson cage as he raises his pistol. Without warning he fires a single shot, laughing as it buries itself between the woman’s eyes, her blood splashing across her son’s shocked face. Watching the horror that envelops the young man as his mother’s body falls lifeless to the ground The Joker chuckles. 

“Just smile!”

Getting to his feet he revels in the scene he had just created. Looking down his nose as the boy turns his hate filled gaze on him.

“What’s the matter kid? The world’s just opened up a whole new career path for ya. I know a certain Bat-” he point’s at the boy’s batman shirt “-who lost his parents too. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Parading around the city dressed as a little birdy? I happen to know a position just opened up as the Bat’s sidekick. Who know’s maybe he’ll even take you in!”

Throwing his head back as he begins to walk away the wicked sound of his cackle fills the boy’s mind, imprinting itself in the deepest part of his psyche. Pausing for a moment The Joker turn’s to stare at the young man once more.

“Hey kid. What’s your name?”

He asks cocking a hairless brow. With clenched fists and tears streaming his face he answers.

“Jason. My name is Jason Todd.”

A fire sparks in his eyes as he meets The Joker’s cold blue gaze.

“And I swear to you. I WILL get you for this.”

Turning to leave The Joker signals for his men to move out, laughing when he here’s the threat.
