Details of a vintage late 20th century Holly Harp chiffon skirt, vest, and scarf set that I recently acquired. The buttons appear to be mosaic pieces of abalone that are covered with matching chiffon fabric. The vest is covered in an ornate floral lace with both the the vest and skirt being lined with silk. Holly Harp was a California designer who went from a Sunset Boulevard sensation to a darling of Fifth Avenue salons. Ms. Harp, who captivated Hollywood with a rich hippie look in the 1960's and enthralled New York with soft clinging designs, was twice nominated for Coty awards. Her fabulous customer list included Janis Joplan, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn, Jacqueline Bisset, Barbara Streusand, Liza Minnelli, Jane Seymour, Lauren Hutton, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Jane Pauley, Courtney Love, Sally Fileds, and Angelica Huston. Her designs were used as costumes in several Hollywood films including Cabaret, Sleeper, The Turning Point, and She Devil. Holly's Harp boutique closed in 1986, but Harp continued to design clothing by commission until her tragically early death from cancer in April, 1995.
