Vox's Liz Plank Creates A New Hashtag To Shift The Conversation About Sexual Assault
Liz Plank is a reporter for Vox who is asking everyone to reconsider the viral #MeToo posts currently filling everyone’s timelines with stories about sexual assault and harassment. That hashtag is being used for survivors to show each other that they’re not alone, and to also display how widespread the problem is. Plank is saying that she is tired of survivors having to come forward with their stories, rather than the perpetrators being named, and asked to do something about rape culture, using the hashtag #HimThough:
thinking about all the time i’ve spent talking about sexual assault when it’s actually a men’s issue. #HimThough pic.twitter.com/tfDPM5olDx
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
I’m proud of women for sharing their stories on #MeToo but we need a shift about how we talk about sexual assault so i’m starting #HimThough
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
#MeToo I was sexually harassed, physically and verbally attacked. But what about him though? Who decided it was women’s job to fix men?
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
Why is the burden always on women? I’m done pretending sexual assault is a woman’s issue. Your shame is not ours. No sir. #HimThough
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
It’s ludicrous to say sexual assault is a women’s issue. Men are victims too. And in vast majority of cases they’re perpetrators. #HimThough
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
How many women will it take to say #MeToo before men talk about #HimThough.
— Liz Plank (@feministabulous) October 17, 2017
Lots of people have taken up Plank’s idea, saying that they shouldn’t be obligated to share difficult and painful experiences for men who have not being targeted to believe this is a real problem:
I was disgusted by the man who harassed me, but much more upset about boss I trusted who was angry at me for telling him. #HimThough
— Lindsay Cross (@LindsayACross) October 17, 2017
I shouldn’t have to share the story of the most humiliating night of my life for men to know that sexual assault is bad #HimThough #MeToo
— hanp93 (@hanp93) October 17, 2017
Now that we’ve highlighted the ubiquity of #metoo, let’s change the language and focus to #himtoo #himthough pic.twitter.com/xRdlCLseth
— Dominique Fraser (@domfraserr2p) October 17, 2017
We’ll see if men take up the banner and start talking to each other about how they can help women, instead of asking women to do all the heavy-lifting.
What do you think of the conversation?

Him Though By Alexander Gordon Jahans The world is lighting up with the hashtag #MeToo as people all across the world come forward to ...
I used to be an anti-feminist and in the wake of #MeToo and #HimThough I have noticed men going through the same stages of denial and frustration that I once did so I decided to write a blog explaining things I wish I had known in those early days so I might have avoided turning anti-feminist.
I don’t like tagging a blog like this onto what is effectively a way for victims to grieve and gain the confidence to come forward and spread awareness but if I can help even one man avoid falling to anti-feminism I figure that has to do some good.
Day 16: Women's Rights Movements. Yesterday I read some upsetting comments on the "Me Too" movement that really struck a nerve for me; I read "being a victim is a choice." As a victim of domestic violence and sexual assault I never wanted to speak out because I didn't the attention or being labeled as a "victim." But I'm thankful for movements that give women the courage to speak about it, spread awareness and fight for equal rights in this society. Have you seen the capabilities of the modern woman?! She works a 9-5, takes care of her children, maintains her home, is educated and looks damn good doing it! In life we can choose to fight our battles or choose to "play victim" to our circumstances, yes. But by no means is being raped a choice, by no means is getting grabbed randomly in public a choice, by no means is being cattle-called from across the street a choice. I'm extremely passionate about this movement as I once let a man take all my power away until I felt that I was stripped down to nothing inside. It took years to gain that confidence back to stand strong as the woman I am today. This is NOT just a woman's issue, so thank you to the men that stand up and speak out. And to all my ladies that stand for each other every day, you are my WCW, every day...
