“So,” Neil starts out, trying to make his tone as cool and casual as possible, even though his heart feels like it’s beating its way out of his chest. “I’ve got this friend.”
Andrew pauses what he’s grabbing from his locker and stares blankly at Neil. “You have friends?”
Neil’s mouth twitches despite himself. “Unfortunately. Or else Matt and Dan are the nicest stalkers I’ve ever met.”
“It’s how they lull you into a false sense of security.”
“Ah, I see,” Neil tilts his head as he leans against the locker next to Andrew’s. “This is all part of their nefarious plan, then?”
“Exactly.”
“Okay. So, once I’m lulled, then what happens?”
“Then they grab you, blindfold you, throw you in the back of a van, and…” Andrew pauses before sighing. “Knowing them, they’d probably surprise you with a free day at an amusement park or a laser tag party or some shit like that.”
“Ugh, disgusting,” Neil says solemnly. “Who would want that?”
“Nerds,” Andrew says promptly. “Like you.”
“Hey! Weren’t you the nerd who bugged me like six times this summer to go to the water park?”
“That’s because it was goddamn hot, and all you wanted to do was run around on the court with Day, like an idiot.”
Neil grins. “So does that make you an idiot, too, since you were on the court with us every time?”
“No,” Andrew huffs. “I was there because some people need supervision. Otherwise, they’d blow out their legs and then whine at me for weeks about how they can’t run and are bored out of their minds.”
“Hmm, you’re right. Day can be a real pain in the ass when he overdoes it,” Neil nods with a straight face, only breaking into a laugh when Andrew pushes his face away from him.
He closes his locker, and the two of them begin walking down the crowded hallway.
Neil clears his throat. “So anyway, about this guy – um…” He takes a deep breath then expels the words from his mouth in a rush, “I heard that he likes you.”
“Heard?”
Neil swallows. “Uh, well, actually, he told me himself, so I know it’s true.”
Andrew bristles for just a second before his eyes coolly flash back at Neil. “So?”
“So, um, would you be interested in meeting him? Maybe?”
