I hadn’t planned on writing meta or speculation about Keith’s wolf, but I had a thought this morning about the naming and how the wolf’s name relates as a callback to Golion and DotU.
First, Thanks and high fives to both @the-not-so-dark-age for their answer/comment on my question about the name of Keith’s wolf—
“It doesn’t have an official name yet, so the fandom calls it “Yorak”, and JDS and LM said in one of the interviews after s6 that the wolf could have a name but it’s spoiler, so we just have to wait and see”
—and to Kindly Anonymous Friend sending me this answer:
“Coran called Keith's wolf a "Cosmic Wolf" specifically when he was crawling through the vents? If anyone knows what it is, it's Coran.”
Both of these answers align with what I thought I was seeing on my dash (and in my head), that the wolf was being referred to in various posts as Space Wolf or Cosmic Wolf (I’ve seen both). Part of the reason I asked b/c I didn’t know if I’d imagined seeing those names or not, it’s been a busy week for me, and don’t have the time to rewatch S6 (and don’t really want to).
I’ve got an idea about why the name is a spoiler (this is a long post).
The other part of the reason that I asked is because in Golion, “Space Wolf” refers to a planetoid with strange gravitational forces that the Golion team gets trapped on (trap set by Honvera and Sincline). Space Wolf appears in a two episode arc: “The Hyperplanetoid Gravity Trap”, and “No Tomorrow For Altea”.
In DotU, the Space Wolf is called the Omega Comet, and the episodes are titled: “The Captive Comet,” and The Little Prince”. In VLD, the gravitational trap on Naxcela already covered the “Hyperplanetoid Gravity Trap” concept.
It’s been weird to see what concepts get pulled from Golion and what gets pulled from DotU. But, what I’m seeing here is: “Space Wolf” from Golion, and “Omega Comet” from DotU gives us “Comet” as the potentially spoiler-y name for Keith’s new friend, especially since it appeared like a comet as it landed on the Space Whale.
As to what could make that name a spoiler (in two parts):
Part 1 (the reference):
The plot of those two episodes is mostly the same between Golion and DotU, and what happens is that Honerva/Haggar and Sincline/Lotor come up with a way to trap Golion/Voltron and destroy both it and Altea/Arus. Honerva/Haggar sends some of her magic-tech to the Space Wolf/Omega Comet to alter its course and send it hurtling towards Altea/Arus.
Sincline/Lotor allows Amue/Romelle to overhear their plan to destroy Altea/Arus and she sends a message to Golion/Voltron, which leads them to investigate the Space Wolf/Omega Comet.
Amue/Romelle is then tricked a second time into telling Golion/Voltron to aim for a “weak point” that really isn’t, this is what gets them trapped.
Girl, you got played...
Alor/Bandor desparetly tries to rescue the team, but can only blast the comet away from Altea/Arus and into deep space. With Alor/Bandor out of the way, but no comet headed towards Altea/Arus, Sincline/Lotor takes matters into his own hands and invades. In Golion, the invasion is very grim, rivers run red with blood, and Sincline is loving every minute of slaughtering Alteans. The invasion of Arus is much less grim in DotU, with scenes either removed or with narration added to obscure what is happening in the animation.
In Golion, the team escapes the Space Wolf after a vision and cosmic pep talk by the Space Goddess. Golion is able to recharge (via the Goddess’s help) with solar energy from a nearby star. In VLD, I read Allura’s boosting Voltron to escape Naxcela as a reference to Golion and the Space Goddess (I’ve seen this mentioned elsewhere too, it’s a pretty obvious reference).
In DotU this is handled differently where they hear a Voice offering to take them to a realm of eternal happiness (as they arrived at the End of the Universe), as each pilot of Voltron thinks of something that they’d want—such as Pidge wanting to see his family again after the destruction of his home world—they decline, wishing to be sent back to Arus instead. Wish granted.
Part 2 (what does it mean!?):
This Cosmic Wolf (as Coran calls it) is likely another of those weird celestial creatures (like the Balmera, Weblum, and Space Whales), and that there is some Altean lore about it that we’ll hear all about next season.
There are three things that the wolf’s appearance could mean (and I think it’s likely to be a bit of each):
1. Hinting at trickery: the wolf's appearance (and potential thematic connection to Space Wolf/Omega Comet) might be a hint that another trap is coming, or that Honerva will send a comet or other planetoid hurtling towards Some Important Place (probably Earth) and the wolf will be instrumental in stopping it. It may also be a hint that Romelle will be (or has been) tricked in some way, technically, she and the surviving Alteans already have been tricked, so there’s that.
2. Cosmic Assistance for The Pure of Heart: the wolf is benign/good due to its coloring being similar to the classic Altean Goody Goodness palette (OR IS IT?), and I’m wondering if it’s going to have some wish granting powers, or take action (e.g. solve a problem) in a classic mythological way like how gods/goddesses take on an unassuming form and reward the hospitality of the mortals that they encounter. I say this because is DotU, the Voice heard when Voltron was trapped on the Omega Comet said (paraphrasing) “you are so courageous and good of heart” when the Voltron team turns down the offer of eternal happiness, and then the Voice grants their wish (that word is never used, but that was always my read) to return to Arus.
Another way of putting it is that: because of our heroes’ Goodness™ (perpetually on display for the Cosmic Wolf to observe over the next few episodes) they will be granted Cosmic Assistance versus Honerva at some critical moment.
3. The Wolf is an Entity of the Trans-Reality variety: during Razor’s Edge, we see the wolf dematerialize and re-materialize to playfully tackle Keith. It happens quickly, and it could be read as “moves at lightning speed.”
But the wolf’s colors which vaguely feel Altean Goody Goodness are also the colors of the Trans-Reality comets...and it landed like a comet on the Space Whale. So it may have the ability to slip in-and-out of realities.
THAT WOULD BE USEFUL.
