Description
Elisabeth of Valois (1545-1568), daughter of King Henry II of France, became the third wife of King Philip II of Spain following the peace treaty between France and Spain in 1559, having previously been betrothed to Don Carlos, Philip II's eldest son. The distance required by courtly portraiture between the sitter and the viewer is heightened by the splendor and rigidity of the richly embroidered clothing.
