Merriam's Pocket Mouse Perognathus merriami

It is found in northeast Mexico and New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas in the United States. It is mainly nocturnal and spends the day in a shallow burrow with several entrances. At temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) Merriam's pocket mouse becomes torpid and in some parts of Texas it may become dormant or hibernate in winter. The diet consists primarily of seeds which it carries back to its burrow in its cheek pouches and consumes there, leaving a littering of husks on the floor.

It occupies the northern region of Baja California near San Diego extending into Mexico. The San Diego pocket mouse is built for slow quadrupedal locomotion. At higher speeds, the pocket mouse "gallops" by hitting the ground with both feet and using its tail for balance. The mice forage at night in attempt to avoid predators. Food is gathered in cheek pouches and stored in separate burrow chambers.

It is endemic to areas within and near the San Joaquin Valley of California in the United States. Habitat destruction due to agricultural development and urbanization has put this species at risk. The species is nocturnal and shows maximum activity levels shortly after sunset.

California Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys californicus

Found in western North America, in Northern California and southern Oregon. It is an IUCN listed Least Concern species, due to the rather large home area and vast range of its distribution.

A rodent from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The diet of Merriam's kangaroo rat is almost exclusively plant seeds They rarely drink water. Rather, they obtain water through the moisture content of their food. When collecting seeds, they store them in the burrows rather than eating them straight away. This causes the moisture in the air to be absorbed by the seeds.
