Eddie's never been so nervous to travel anywhere with Buck. For once, though, it's not his own issues causing the hangup — after New Mexico, he's never been more sure of his and Chris's place in Buck's life. They'd barely been on the road home from that disastrous town for an hour when it came out that Buck had nearly sacrificed himself for Eddie and Chris. Clearly, the will hadn't been enough for Buck to get the idea through his thick skull, so Eddie took a clearer route this time around: he'd pulled to the side of the road, shaking and aching, took Buck's face in both of his hands, and kissed him until Chris called in a panic after seeing their location still for so long. They should have known there'd be another shoe to drop, but neither of them saw it coming until Maddie arrived on their doorstep, fresh off a conversation with Phillip and Margaret Buckley. "A family reunion?" Buck's nose scrunched up like it always did when he was trying to avoid reacting. "We haven't done one of those since...have we ever?" Maddie had no such reservations, a frown settled deep in her face. "They do them every five years, but Mom and Dad haven't been invited since Daniel."

Buck can't say there's much he missed about his childhood, but her pot pie is one of the few things his mom can cook with Bobby-level quality. He's just about to ask her for the recipe when his father speaks up first. "I really will miss your cooking, Margaret. You've outdone yourself tonight." Buck's spoon scrapes against his near-empty bowl. Right. With all the worry about the reunion, Buck had forgotten his parents were doing the opposite. He thinks maybe Maddie did, too, judging by the way she freezes while ripping up more chicken for Nash. "Oh, Phillip," Margaret sighs, not angry, just...sad. The rest of the table finds great interest in the bottom of their bowls. But Buck's never been one to leave well enough alone. "S-So, um. When is...when's that happening? Officially?" Buck stutters out. He can't look at either of his parents when he asks. Across the table, Chris gives him a grim sort of look. At the same time, Eddie's knee bumps against his. "Soon, I think," Margaret says quietly. "Once we can sell the RV, it will be easier for the lawyers to split our assets." "Does the rest of the family know?" Maddie's ask is much less tentative, but Buck can hear the tremor in her voice. "Not yet." Phillip answers. "We thought it might be better if we waited until after this week to break the news." "Why?" The question leaves Buck's mouth before he can think better of it. "Sorry. It's just...does it really matter? When you've hardly heard from any of them since Daniel?" Both of his parents flinch at the name, and Eddie's leg presses against his more insistently. "Why would you think that, Evan?" Margaret's thin eyebrows crease together. "They're your fathers' family. Of course we hear from them. Usually just around birthdays and Christmases, but—" "Oh," Buck swallows. "I didn't know." The only family members Buck remembers seeing as a child come from two small branches. His grandparents came around every other Christmas until they died when he was eight. Then, all that was left was an aunt, uncle, and an older cousin that lived a few streets away. Aunt Barbara and Uncle Jimmy died a few years back, too, but he didn't make it to either funeral, due to the ladder truck bombing and Eddie's shooting, respectively. They weren't super close, but they were always polite enough to him. Polite, but not familial. "Yes, well." Margaret says, clearing her throat and the remnants of her bowl. "They kept their distance after..." "Mom," Maddie accuses, devastated. Her voice and eyes are watery. None of Buck's born family can bear to look at him. All at once, it clicks. "They wanted to hear from you, and not from me." Buck states, and knows it's a fact. "Right." He sniffs. "And they feel how, exactly, about me coming to this reunion thing?"

On their way out the back exit of Hersheypark, Chim bumps Eddie's shoulder while they both watch Buck give Jee a piggyback ride and push Chris through the crowd. "Sorry I jinxed us," he mutters.

"Honestly, Chim? I think Hershey might be the jinx. Or maybe the Buckleys themselves."

Chim laughs, something hard and humorless. "You might be onto something, there."

🐄 - what trope do you feel like you're milking in this particular fic?

Truly, honestly, the whump. Like I know I started this as a Buck whump fic but things just keep HAPPENING to him as I write that I never planned. The snippets I've posted so far don't even get into the main whump I started writing this fic for. Just assume everything will happen to him here, ig. Case in point, here's another thread of his pain :)

Buck wakes with a gasp so deep it makes his lungs burn. There are hands on him, holding his hair and chest, and they feel like anchors in an ocean. He fumbles and slaps at them until they disappear, and that's worse, leaving him unmoored and alone in a tangle of blue. Well, not entirely. There is the voice summoning him back to shore. A voice he learned long ago meant comfort, safety, love, even in the face of their biggest emergencies. "You're okay, Buck. It was just a dream." Eddie's paramedic voice is even and rhythmic, a beat he can focus on while he forces his lungs to cooperate. "That's it, just breathe, Buck. I'm right here. You're okay." Sweating profusely, Buck throws his half of the blankets onto Eddie, pushes the cuffs of his sweatshirt up to his elbows. "Fuck," he whispers, fanning himself with the collar. "You with me now?" Eddie asks, and Buck nods to his lap. Only then does he turn away long enough to switch on the small bedside lamp. Then: "Are you okay?" Buck huffs, trying to breathe out all the extra tension clogging his sinuses. He hasn't had that dream — flashback, his brain corrects — in years. Maybe it was juvenile for him to think he'll ever move past it for good. "I don't know." Eddie seems to lean forward unconsciously, before catching himself and maintaining the minuscule distance between them. "Would a hug help or hurt you right now?" Buck looks to Eddie to see him looking back. It's his paramedic expression, too: closed enough to say I can help, open enough to say I'm in this with you. He's already reaching forward when his voice breaks around his answer. "Help."

from an upcoming fic, about buck & maddie (& co.) going back to pennsylvania for their parents' anniversary:

“Thomas Kinard,” Buck says, lifting his head finally to give Tommy his sternest look while maintaining eye contact. “I am not fucking in a bed that has crumbs in it.” Tommy laughs. Buck is kind of addicted to how it feels against his chest. “Copy that,” Tommy says, and pecks a kiss at the corner of Buck’s mouth. Buck chases his lips and Tommy dodges – he tries again and Tommy pulls back from their embrace, ducking away from Buck’s grabbing hands and pursed lips. Buck gives chase and they giggle all the way down the hall, Tommy just out of reach the whole time, until they collapse in a breathless, smitten heap together on the bed. The danishes can wait.

hi ellie!! 🥰🥰🥰 i've rethought how i want to tackle this fic so it needs a bit of a tonal overhaul but here's something i'm still happy with from it:

"Uh, morning, Maddie. I didn't know we were expecting you." Maddie waves her hand dismissively. "You weren't. I was doing some errands nearby and thought I'd come visit." She pulls a giant milkshake-looking thing piled high with whipped cream from the cardboard tray and offers it to Tommy. "Coffee?" "Sure, thanks," Tommy says, his expression still somewhere in the vicinity of bewildered. He eats a huge dollop of whipped cream off the end of the straw. Buck's hindbrain gets stuck on the idea of licking the taste of it out of his mouth, off his tongue, maybe off his skin if they had a can of it– "Buck," Maddie says. It's clear she's been repeating his name – she's holding a coffee cup out to him that he rushes to take. "Oh, uh, thanks – thanks, Maddie." The cup is stamped with the logo from his and Tommy's favourite cafe, near where Buck's loft was; kind of an out-of-the-way stop between Maddie and Chimney's place and Buck and Tommy's.

The flight is at least uneventful – or, as uneventful as flying with a five-year-old ever gets. They manage to get five seats on a nonstop from LAX to Philly, where they rent a couple of cars and drive the two hours to Hershey. Already, on the drive in, Buck feels a sense of unrealness, like he's taken a step back and is now watching himself from over his own shoulder. The landscape is familiar yet foreign, predictable yet surprising, and it prickles at his brain as Tommy takes them down the highway.
