Bobbi Morse or Melinda May?
Hi, I just read the secret history and then all your meta on it and it really helped me understand the characters better. I was wondering, if you have time, would you talk about how Henry views Richard and what he is to him? Like is he only the audience he needs, a pawn for his plan or something else?
Mm, well, I think Henry views Richard much like he views the rest of the group, with maybe the exception of Camilla, whom he considers as an equal. The rest are a means to an end, really, Charles and Richard maybe more than Francis. Charles is the one that takes the fall for them all but mostly for Henry, and Richard is the integral part to Henry’s quest for (for the lack of a better word) immortality. Henry leaves a significant imprint on Richard’s emotions and memories, as well as his mind, all to the effect that Richard will write down his little story about the Greek class and so, even though he’s dead, Henry lives on in Richard’s story.
I mean, Henry flatters Richard to an almost ridiculous degree: the revelation about the true events of November, Henry’s praise of Richard that basically boils down to ‘I knew you were smart enough to figure it out all on your own’ when in reality, Henry just led Richard by the hand and allowed him to think he was the clever one while Henry played him like an upright bass. Since Richard is nothing if not vain, that kind of praise from someone he viewed as highly as Henry (‘I doubt if Milton himself could have impressed me more’) meant a lot and that meant Richard became even more loyal to Henry than before, although Henry saving his life laid a good foundation to that already.
All in all, I think every Henry needs a Richard, much like every Hamlet needs a Horatio and every Romeo needs a Benvolio - the tragic figure always needs someone that lives on to tell their tale. Of course, in Henry and Richard’s case, it helped a lot that Richard was incredibly infatuated with Henry and thus tried to show him in a better light. Henry’s end was nothing but selfish, but in Richard’s mind Henry became the tragic hero instead of a selfish young man who wanted to be something more than merely human.
