pyaasa is synonymous to guru dutt. it is not only one of his best works but one of the best movies to have come out of Hindi cinema. it is layered, complex, riddled, painful, confusing, infuriating, surprising and melancholic. Hemant da composed the album, lending his voice to this immortal number that has been a staple for people generations. Sahir Ludhianvi has penned the album with immense intricacy and care like his own child; putting in verses of poems that would resonate to a common person of any class. but especially an artist. an artist who yearns for a love that he lost. an artist who craves the validation that slips from his fingers. an artist who thinks he has lost himself but finds himself only to lose again. it’s brilliant story telling for an audience that was used to loud melodrama. pitiful that the movie didn’t work it’s charm the way dutt had anticipated but he didn’t know the legacy he would leave behind. the story is rather ironic, as fate unravelled in his real life only to take him to a place similar to his character in the movie.
