Honestly, this storyline broke me emotionally

I don't know how anyone could hate their own child, especially for something they can't help.

But I'm glad, in a way, that Jeremy had a happy ending - or at least to me he did.

The fact that Hell Priest could have easily killed him, but deemed him worthy to be his apprentice honestly just warms my heart. It shows that under all those pins and leathers, he's capable of good intentions.

yeah, this comic is pretty bad, but at least it’s riddled with transphobia & racism & contempt for sex workers! … oh, wait, those are also bad, actually. huh.

okay in all seriousness the one redeeming feature here is that parts of this are super horny. like, again, that’s an aspect that’s surprisingly lacking in some iterations of this franchise, so it’s always nice when it shows up pretty unambiguously.

also, like, the overall concept of pinhead traveling backwards through time and experiencing himself in different contexts is pretty cool, though i don’t think it was necessarily executed great here? but yeah, this wasn’t the worst hellraiser comic i’ve read.

boom! studios’ run of hellraiser comics, comprising the hellraiser ongoing, hellraiser: the road below & hellraiser: the dark watch was characterized by a much tighter continuity than the epic comics days.

the overarching plot is sometimes admittedly a bit tedious when you zoom out & consider it in the aggregate, with the whole thing basically centering on elliott spencer, kirsty cotton, and harry d’amour playing musical chairs (or i guess musical pins?) with the role of pinhead. but the moment-to-moment experience of at least having a coherent storyline and characters to follow made the actual experience of reading it quite a bit less tedious than the epic comics anthologies. (minus book of the damned which was just brilliant.)

part of it is just the fact that we get to see a hell of a lot more of the cenobites. which is just. all i’ve ever wanted from this shit. it’s again kinda hit or miss with how often it’s overtly kinky, but there are a few pretty great moments of kink in there.

it wasn’t until their last miniseries, hellraiser: bestiary, that there was a limited return to more anthologized storytelling, and admittedly this was responsible for some of my favorite moments of boom! studios’ run.

none of this was groundbreaking or anything, but it was definitely a more consistent experience. i had a feeling going in that i was going to enjoy boom! studios’ time with the license more given that i read a lot of their current stuff today, so it was nice to have that vindicated. (plus i added a few things to my “to read” list from old ads of theirs in these comics, so that’s also nice.)
