It was a normal day in the common area.

No new missions to fight today, so everyone was just relaxing—at least, until your voice rang out.

“My boy?!” you gasped.

Instantly, Bucky and Matt looked up, each assuming you were calling for them. But when their eyes met, narrowing in a mix of suspicion and competitiveness, jealousy sparked almost immediately.

“They’re talking about me,” Bucky muttered under his breath.

“I have better hearing than you. Pretty sure they were talking about me,” Matt shot back.

Sparks practically flew between the two as their heavy gazes locked in silent challenge—until your voice rang out again, this time even more enthusiastic:

“Gambit!”

“Mon dieu!” Remy yelped, startled, and dropped the deck of cards he’d been holding. As the newest member of the team, he was still terrified of the presence that always seemed to be watching from above—the same feeling that had plagued all of them when they first arrived.

He glanced upward frenetically, as if sheer panic could magically reveal your location.

Meanwhile, Bucky and Matt exchanged slow, deliberate glances.

“Truce?” Bucky asked, his tone wary.

“Only until we deal with the new guy,” Matt replied, a sly smirk tugging at his lips.

I agree with you about the shoddy worldbuilding, worldbluilding is one of my favourite things in stories, so the world-building gets on my nerves…but if I were to start ranting about what is the holy colours of these countries for example, this ask will become me rambling away about the worldbuilding. That's what head canons and fan fiction are for I guess...

To answer your question, I personally thought the Darkling was dumb on the skiff, if he was being smart he could've used Mal as leverage against Alina. Instead he was being a petty bastard though he's already a bastard. Two possible explanations I have for this are one, in universe he obviously drunk on power over Alina and two, the other being that the plot demanded it, which is far more likely.

I'm afraid him being a petty bastard is very much the plot of the trilogy. It's central to his character. He can absolutely not concede with the fact that alina doesn't immediately develop heart eyes for him and is only offering him her loyalty not out of genuine love or devotion but as a prize for mal's life. He takes consolation in the fact that object of her wholehearted devotion he might not be, he has complete institutional authority/ownership of her at least and uses that to take out this malyen shaped thorn in his side and also teach alina how this relationship, that according to his delusional ass, the universe has bound them indefinitely in, is going to go. Like a typical villain he demands complete submission from her and this is basically what fuels the plot for the next two books.

I do take issues with how court politics is handled and how unbelievably stupid a million years old darkling is as a military commander though. Like wdym as a show of force to ravka's enemies you ... expand the fold on an insignificant territory inside ravka, killing more ravkans, that benefits you and the country in NO fucking way during an ongoing war? You stupid??
