Well, the time has come. Here is my artwork for this Friday's (May 2nd) Hellboy 20th Anniversary Art Show at Hero Complex Gallery. "Anung Un Rama, the beast with the heart of Gold." The art was finalized in vector, then sent to the amazing Maggie Lomeli / Gray Area Print (www.grayareaprint.com) for a white & gold screen-print finish on black bristol paper.
I think I drew out 10 different pieces of art for this show, but ultimately went with the image that came to my mind the most, which was Hellboy bearing his heart (inspired by one of my favorite Hellboy illustrations by Mike Mignola - The Island, issue #2). I also wanted to do something that represented Hellboy & his story as a whole in various symbols.
This truly is a dream come true for me...Hellboy is my favorite graphic novel & superhero...the first I could relate to and read over & over again. I remember the first time I heard of Hellboy was through the special features of my Blade 2 dvd (Guillermo Del Toro kept talking about this character, called Hellboy). I remember asking my mom if she could pick-up an issue for me (at the closest comic shop in town, which was in Bloomsburg, PA)...I believe it was Conqueror worm #4.
He's never left my heart since. I've followed his quest all the way to his end & sort of rebirth in Hell. It has been an absolute treat and honor to work on this. Thank-you Mike Mignola for all the wonderful inspiration & joy these past ten years of my life and here's to many more! Happy 20th HB!
