A creature stitched together of the most beautiful parts, but came together with yellowish sunken skin, pale eyes, black lips, and long lustrous black hair. I'm SO excited to finally show this piece in its entirety. I am so honoured to be included in this wonderful show alongside such incredible artists, for a story I loved when I first read it in high school. 2018 is the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I've always loved her description of the monster, and his popular depictions never really spoke to me. I always pictured the monster being made in the image of Adam, and all those artistic versions of him that Victorians were obsessed with, rather than a clumsy grotesque wreck. The horror of Frankenstein's monster was never in how he looked -- it was the horror of existence. The horror of being created alone and with no purpose and with nothing to anchor him to the humans around him save his superficial appearance. Anyways, this is my attempt to resolve that visually. We all know Frankenstein is the real monster, but I wanted to also show the poetic and tragic connection the two have, repelling each other and yet drawn to each other right up to the edge of the world.
