You'd made sure to grumble for the entire conversation and insult Rachel as many times as possibleâyou haven't lost your touch, really, you just never mean it anymoreâbut as you beat some asshole on his bluetooth to a cab, juggling your briefcase and a few boxes of vegan Chinese food, you don't really mind at all. You're out of the office early, first of all, and your caseload had been insane latelyânot that you necessarily mind in theory: your success rate is the best in the state, which means you put away quite a few shitty humans regularly; you get offers from private firms all the time, and you'd make tons more money, but you'd gone into the public sector for a very concrete reason, even before you'd met your wife, but now there's nothing that could really draw you away from the important work you're doing.

Youâve been watching Nora part-time for about ten months, although youâve known Rachel and Quinn for over a year: youâd been surprised at first when youâd gone to the interview and their child wasnât even born yet, but then you actually met Rachel, and then it wasnât surprising at all.
Youâve adored Nora since the beginning, and for a few weeks Rachel and Quinn intimidated the hell out of you, but youâve grown to be comfortable around them, despiteâokay, youâd snooped a little, but harmlessly, you swearâQuinnâs terrifying office and their insanely expensive wardrobes.Â
Itâs a pretty awesome job, reallyâthe pay is killer, and Nora really is adorable and itâs amazed you to watch her grow up, and it gives you time to focus on your art too. Quinn and Rachel are pretty great too, all things consideredâRachel is constantly making sure the fridge and pantry are stocked with food sheâd noticed youâd favored, and one day Quinn invited you to stay for the takeout sheâd brought when she got home from a meeting and Rachel was at her show so she âwouldnât feel guilty for drinking wine alone,â youâd mentioned that your boyfriend was having top surgery in a month, sheâd smiled into her masala and then asked the loveliest questionsânone of which had to do with gender, just with the two of you. But sheâd made sure, in the following weeks, to ask thoughtful questions about your schedule, whether or not you needed more time off, even if there was anything she and Rachel could do to help out. Her kindness in those moments softened everything about her, and you canât imagine her grading your papersâthatâs a horrifying thought in itselfâbut when you watch her with her daughter and her wife, youâre not so scared at all.
Theyâre pretty cute, all things considered. Rachel is usually loud, and last Februaryâa week after Valentineâs, which was weird but whateverâyouâd come over to a brownstone full of vases of gardenias and their unmade bed, Rachel blushing furiously and Quinn wrapping a huge scarf around her neck. Quinn focused completely on her boots while Rachel had mumbled something about yesterday being important, and youâd only let yourself be amazed by how in love they are once theyâd left for their respective jobs and youâd sat in their open living room and taken it all in. Youâre pretty serious with Justin, and you are in love with him, but Quinn and Rachel still manage to take your breath away on occasion: theyâve known each other since they were fourteen, Rachel tells you one night, been in love since eighteen, maybe sooner. Quinn gets sick every few monthsâRachel had called you to watch Nora in the middle of the night once when they went to the hospital because Quinn was having trouble breathingâand you donât ask why, and neither of them really say anything to you, but once you come over and Quinn is wearily finishing breakfast and Rachel is rubbing her back. Quinn leaves first, with a cough and then this sort of sad kiss, and Rachel sighs when she leaves and says, âI canât imagine the world without her in it,â very softly before collecting herself and bustling around to gather everything she needs for the day.
For the most part, though, theyâre happy, profoundly and simply. They have their off-days, and they bicker from time to time, but once, when youâd commented on how they seem to have such a good life, Quinn shrugged with a smile and said, âI got lucky, thatâs all.â
The past few months had been hard, thoughânot that theyâre fighting, and theyâd taken a few days in Paris a month ago, even, but Rachelâs newest film had been, from all youâve gathered, terribly difficult to deal with. You knew a lot about it, even though you werenât allowed to really say anything to anyone. They set up this crazy schedule with you for three monthsâthey gave you a raise and thanked you profusely, but really, it was fineâand for a week or so you didnât really notice anything different. But then there were none of Rachelâs favorite vegan sweets in the pantryâso you really like the gingersnaps from Trader Joeâs, whateverâand Rachel had started to look just a little thinner, and then one day she came home with all of her hair buzzed off; you didnât really know what to do other than make sure to hold her gaze and not stare the entire time you told her about Noraâs day. A few days later Quinn was obviously sniffling when she came home first. You learned that it was a movie about a concentration camp, and as everything grew more subdued, you didnât have to wonder why. You tried your hardest to keep things light and normal for Nora, but even she seemed just a little less vivacious, even though she had started to talk a little and still squealed on the swings at the park.
But tonight Rachel and Quinn had gone to a wrap party. Itâs late and Nora had gone to bed hours ago, and youâre trying to stay awake by watching your favorite standup comedyâQuinn is a huge fan, so they have an impressive collection of recordingsâeven though they never mind if you fall asleep. You hear them struggling to open the door for a few seconds and smile to yourself; theyâd come home drunk a handful of times before, and theyâre always amusing. They finally get the front door open and you hear Quinn say, âYes,â while Rachel booms a laugh, which makes your smile bloom into a grin, because yeah, youâve missed that too, and then you hear a thump. Itâs quiet for a few seconds after that and youâre about to go check on them when you hear a moan from Rachel, and then Quinn mumble something about âitâs getting long enough to pull,â and then a low growl from Quinn.Â
You make a bunch of noise as you feel your cheeks heat up, clear your throat, and theyâre quiet for another minute before you hear Quinn say, âI love you,â and Rachel return the sentiment tenderly. They walk into the living room hand in hand, glassy-eyed, with swollen lips, Rachel trying to straighten her dress, Quinn with tangled hair. You try not to laugh but then Quinn starts fishing around in her purse for some moneyâthey pay you a salary but sometimes extra when they run lateâand you say, âReally, itâs okay,â because they both kind of smell like tequila and Rachelâs hand is drifting toward Quinnâs ass with this little smirk on her face. Quinn emerges with a small, âAha!â and a one-hundred euro bill, and hands them it to you, asks, âIs this okay? I donât know where the rest of my American cash is and the exchange rate isââ
You laugh and so does Rachel, and you say, âReally, you donât need to pay me anything extra forââ
Quinn practically shoves the bill into your hand and slurs, âYouâve just been so great.â
Rachel kisses Quinnâs shoulder and Quinnâs eyes flutter for a moment, and you canât really see one of Rachelâs hands somewhere behind Quinnâs back, and really you need to leave as quickly as possible, so you move to gather your laptop, and then you turn toward them.Â
"We havenâtâ" Rachelâs brow furrowsâ "this is our first time having sex since I finished filming."
Quinn blushes but she smiles, and for as mildly gross as this is, theyâre still stupidly adorable together.Â
"Iâll leave you to it, then," you say, and Rachel launches herself forward to give you a slightly unsteady hug and a sloppy and very alcohol-saturated kiss on the cheek, and Quinnâs hug is stiffer but kind. "Good night, guys," you say, and they wave with a few giggles.
You donât even make it out of the foyer before you hear a zipper and Quinnâs âOh god, baby,â and you lock up faster than you ever had before.
You get there early the next morningâRachel has press interviews and Quinn has a seminarâand both of them look exhausted, and, of course, theyâre wearing thick scarves. Quinn looks embarrassed but Rachel playfully hipchecks her while sheâs buttering toast, and they kiss gently before Quinn says, âDid I give you euro last night?â
You laugh with a nod, and she laughs too. âDo you want American cash?â
"Itâs fine," you say, and go to kiss the top of Noraâs head while she sits in her high chair generally making a mess of her cheerios.
They both thank you again, slightly sheepishly, but then Rachel just ends up laughing and Quinn groans and says, âQuieter, honey, please.â
Rachel smiles and Quinn rolls her eyes, ushers her wife out of their brownstone with a gentle hand to the small of her back.
Nora starts laughing and you pick her up. âYour moms are silly, arenât they, Nor?â
She moves to tug on your hair with a grin. Her eyes are almost Quinnâs hazel, and her skin is darker like Rachelâs, and sheâs beautiful, and you love her quite a lot. âLetâs go to the park, yeah?â you ask.
She nods a little and you bundle her up and get her stroller ready, and yeah, it feels pretty good to be a part of all of the warmth here.

Youâre exhausted when you make your way home from the studio, barely managing to stay awake in the car. Today was another long dayâyouâve worked longer hours before, but never hours like this, never with this much devastation. Youâd filmed a scene today that was the aftermath of your character being raped, and you donât know if you really have words right now.
Itâs a startling thing for you, to not have words. Youâve built your life on them, on how talented you are at speaking, singing, knowing those words. At languaging things. Itâs one of the many reasons you love Quinn so much, that she understands your talent for them. Sheâs talented too, immensely so, in a slightly more subdued sense, but reallyâyouâve both made a living off of words.
is there a rape scene in the film?
no, actually, bc i think rape scenes are loud, & i think v often they're gratuitous, & this film really isn't abt rape.Â
it is explicitly implied though, bc there's a scene directly after a rape. no one has to say the word, even, but it's completely there in the film.Â

oh i just asked about how rachel's fathers react to her being in the movie but what about her grandparents? so they all sit down and watch the movie together?
nah, they never actually sit down & watch it together. & in my headcanon, both of her grandparents passed away before rachel made this film.
how to rachel's dads react to her getting the part?
yknow i've thought about this quite a bit & they'd be so, so proud of her, first of all, for being asked, & secondly, for taking it, & thirdly, for really, really fulfilling her role in the film.Â
but ofc it's hard. they've always raised her to be so proud of herself & her heritage, & she is, which is why the film hits so closely. & ofc, they're there through the whole process as wellâthey probably cry later that night the first time they see rachel's hair, & they check in on quinn more frequently than normal as well (which she appreciates so much).
& they only watch the film once, bc that's their baby girl onscreen getting degraded, raped, beaten, & dehumanized, & that's their baby girl falling in love despite of it, & as fathers, they never, ever want to watch it againâit's not because they're ashamed of rachel or anything like that; they're blown away & so proud, in that aspect. it's just smth as parents they never want to see again, bc rachel is smiling & laughing & married with a daughter in front of them, & they need to remember that image at night.
Do you think Rachel would learn any foreign language while she worked on the movie? German or Hebrew or Polish or
I think Rachel actually already knows a fair amount of hebrew, but she definitely brushes up on it & learns more. & yeah, I think she'd at least learn some german & possibly polish & possibly some Yiddish, as well, just so she could get a feel for the nuances of the culture, more than really use it in the film.
