It started raining that night, the stormy clouds had quickly blotted out the starry sky and moon, the darkness seemed deeper that way. The rain was not too strong but it kept going for hours now.
Everything was wet and soaked through by now, on the wall, a few guards were grumbling and silently cursing their luck to be chosen as watchmen at this time. They tried to keep as dry as they could while patrolling on top of the wall. They kept their lanterns closer in a feeble attempt to retain some warmth from the flickering fire inside.
In the forest below, a pair of sky-blue eyes glimmered aver so faintly.
âA-a-ahchoo!â â Himmel sneezed and tried to press himself even closer to the tree he was currently squatting under.
He was slightly shivering and soaked with rain water, his pants, boots and sleeves were muddy and his usually fluffy blue hair was drooping and flat.
âHow good must it be, being inside a warm inn and close to the fireâŠâ â he sighed and looked at the city with envy.
Even if he wanted to sneak in, this settlement was out of his reach because of the barrier, so he was stuck out there, in the rain, dealing with it just how he did back when he was still living in the demon territory. If only the burrow he had found had not started leaking and getting muddy, he would have not been squatting under a tree in this weather.
âI guess you never realize how good the little comforts of civilization are until you lose them. Who would have thought Iâd be sleeping out in the rain like the old times? Wonder how the other are? Hopefully, they have found a good inn to stay in.â â he thought.
*Flash!-RUUUUMMMBLEEE~
The distant sound of thunder startled him a bit and he pressed even closer to the tree trunk. The swordsman really hoped the storm wonât get worse.
Happy Birthday, Heizou! Enjoy some time with Aether!

Aether had to admit to admit...
He felt a little awkward.
It wasn't that he'd never gone to a restaurant before, and with Paimon being absent she wasn't able to embarrass him with her bottomless stomach. No, the real reason he felt so weird wasâŠ
WellâŠ
"Can you afford this?" Aether said quietly, looking around the fancy private room. The restaraunt allowed each customer to have their own room, complete with gorgeous decorations, sinfully comfy cushions, and tableware that Aether was too scared to touch at first.
Even the waitresses were stunning! Each server was clothed in silken, extravagant fabrics that gave them an air of elegant royalty.
The food was nothing to snuff at either, each dish having been perfectly aligned to his tastes and chosen previously before his arrival.
He would've expected this from the Kamisato family, not him!
Aether shifted nervously as he awaited an answer from Heizou, the detective looking completely unaffected by the fancy surroundings.
Heizou took a sip of tea, his elbow propped on the table in front of them. "I do have a decently paying career, you know," He answered, "You don't think I make chump change, do you?"
"No, it's justâŠ" His hands curled into his pants fabric, "This isâŠa bit much."
"Only the best for my dear partner," Heizou purred, "Don't you worry about the price. I'm treating you, remember?"
"It's your birthday!' Aether exclaimed, "I should be treating you!"
"Says who, exactly?" Heizou placed his cup down, leaning his chin on his fist.
"I-It'sâŠ" Aether licked his lips nervously, trying to find the words, "It's just how it is!"
"And if I say I don't want that, what're you gonna do?" Heizou chuckled, "You'll go against my own wishes on my birthday?"
"I'm saying I want to do something for you! Isn't there anything you want?!" Aether finally blurted out, cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Heizou's eyes widened, blinking a few times as he stared at Aether.
A few seconds passed.
His lips curved sharply.
"So, what I'm hearingâŠ" Heizou lowered his arms to the table, leaning across, "âŠIs that you want to do something, if not anything for me, for my birthday."
"Y-Yes" Aether shifted backwards a little.
"Anything, huh?" Heizou hummed, thinking carefully, "The list is endless. Am I limited to only one, my dear?"
"UmâŠ" It was his birthday, "I can doâŠmore."
Heizou's gaze darkened. "More?"
"W-Within reason!" Aether hurriedly added.
"Of course," Heizou breathed out, "A shame we still need to eat. I want to claim my present right now."
Aether swallowed down his embarrassment, throwing caution to the window as he leaned across the table to meet him halfway. He kissed him quickly, pulling away before the detective had a chance to deepen it.
"Be patient?" Aether whispered, sending a side-eye to the closed sliding door, "When we're done, we canâŠ" He made a vague gesture with his hand.
Heizou let out an exaggerated sigh before dropping back fully onto his cushion.
"Very well," He conceited, sending a dangerous smirk as someone knocked on the door and entered. He ignored the waitress who came in to deliver their first appetizer, delighting in the way Aether's face erupted in crimson and the woman's body tensed as he spoke.

âI love you.âÂ
Itâs nonchalant, muttered into the back of Heizouâs neck like an exhale. Fitting, because it comes as natural as breathing. Clearly not planned, not up to the very moment it was out.Â
Heizouâs heart stops in his chest regardless.Â
Because none of that changes the fact that this is the first time Aether said it.Â
Of course, Aether is a man of action, and Heizou is nothing if not observant. Heâs already read âI love youâ in every touch, every kiss, every moment spent together on one of Heizouâs projects instead of reforming a nation, looking for a lost twin, or whatever the âlegendary travelerâ has on his plate at the time. In theory, Heizou should not have been affected beyond yet another truth heâs inferred being acknowledged.Â
In theory.Â
In actuality, his breath gets caught in his lungs, and he goes stiff in Aetherâs arms.Â
Even then, Aether doesnât appear to be worried. Heizou canât see his face, but he reads patience in the way Aetherâs forearms squeeze around his waist. Assurance in the way Aether further buries himself in the crook of his neck. Not a trace of vexation or concern, however.
Why would there be? The very first reason that Heizou fell in love with Aether is that he is observant enough to keep pace. He does not exactly have the same process, Heizou can tell from watching how Aetherâs mind works, but he is nevertheless sharp and perceptive. He should already know that Heizou is absolutely smitten with him. It should be clear as day with how Heizou introduces him as his partner when he is notorious for not accepting any. How he trusts him with his deepest secrets, be it about a cold case or simply his past. How he keeps coming back to him - even when he desperately wants to stay away, because he knows he can never be the only one for Aether, and sometimes it is too much.Â
Heizou loves him way too much.Â
Thatâs why he is struck by a simple spoken fact. It matters little that he knows Aether loves him - the sound of it erupts in his ribcage like a flower that waited too long to bloom in the spring and burst in the summer. Even the way it is spoken solidifies that fact - casual, like Aether has said it hundreds of times before. Natural. Real. Â
Lips brush against his cheek, a little too close to his eyes than usual, and thatâs when he realizes-
âI did not think this was such dreadful news,â Aether jokes into his ear, melody subdued yet still evident in the lower volume of his voice. He continues kissing Heizouâs face like he intends to clear his tears with his lips, and Heizou makes a feeble attempt to push him away. Nevermind his laughter giving away his indisposition to actually stop Aether.Â
âI simply feel bad for everyone else,â Heizou says, slurring with intentional nonchalance. âThe abolisher of the vision hunt decree, the golden traveler desired by all⊠lovestruck by little old me.âÂ
âMy, I didnât realize you were so compassionate for others, doushin,â Aether teases. âDo you wish to set up a charity? Five minutes of some travelerâs love, courtesy of the Tenryou Commissionâs own prodigal detective?â
This should be a sore subject. They should not be joking about this. Somehow, the jealousy it ignites in Heizouâs veins is no longer destructive, burning everything in its path - itâs oddly comforting, and dare Heizou say, fun. He is always going to be at least a little possessive, but now, there is acceptance that comes with it, and with it, respect.Â
âNot compassionate enough, Iâm afraid.â Humming, Heizou wiggles out of Aetherâs hold until he can turn around and climb on his lap, knees at either side of the travelerâs hips. He cradles Aetherâs face with both of his hands, and Aether leans into the touch. âI would keep you all to myself if I could, watch the world weep with you in my arms.âÂ
Aether doesnât say anything, but he doesnât seem disturbed, either. He simply looks up to Heizou, a small, patient smile on his lips.Â
The Traveler may have many lovers, and he may not love Heizou the way he loves them - but he will not love any of them the way he loves Heizou, either.Â
His vindication is in knowing Aether also loves Heizou way too much.Â
âAlas, I am but a humble detective,â Heizou whispers, smiling back at Aetherâs amused smirk at the blatantly false adjective. âWho am I to stake claim on the hero of Teyvat?âÂ
âOnly the cyclone that strikes fear in the heart of crooks all over Inazuma,â Aether retorts with a lazy ease.Â
âFlattery will get you everywhere, Traveler.âÂ
âAs long as itâs with you, detective.âÂ
Heizouâs heart flutters at the assertion. Is that not what anyone should want to be for a wanderer? Not someone that anchors them to the ground, but a companion they wish to keep around and share experience with. He has no reason to doubt the sincerity of that little remark, either. Despite the flirty back-and-forth their conversations tend to devolve into, Aether is not one to say things for the sake of having said them - he either speaks the truth or speaks not at all.Â
It is only fair if Heizou returns the favor.Â
âI love you,â he says, watching Aetherâs eyes widen, lips parted with a short gasp. Heizou allows himself to appreciate the sight for a moment, to observe the surprise fading to be replaced by a softness clouding the travelerâs gaze, before circling his arms around Aetherâs shoulders and dipping down for a kiss.Â
Aether, as usual, is perfectly responsive - rarely initiating, but always retaliating at full force. He spreads his palm on the small of Heizouâs back, and slowly drags it up his spine, sending jolts through the thin fabric of his shirt. Heizou runs a hand through Aetherâs hair, pulling at his scalp until some of the long strands start breaking free from Aetherâs braid, which has the traveler huff into Heizouâs lips in frustration. Heizou simply laughs, a small, silent thing, a secret buried in the breath flowing between one another, before he kisses him again. Itâs not apologetic, but from the way Aether presses further into his space, it clearly gets him forgiven, and Heizou keeps messing up Aetherâs hairdo without undoing the whole thing with dignity.Â
He doesnât realize Aetherâs insistence has him gradually pushed down until his back hits the mattress. Aether catches himself in time, first a hand and then an elbow next to Heizouâs ear. With the traveler hovering over him like this, Heizou can see the number heâs done on him: lips already swollen, eyes hooded yet teary, long hair sticking out everywhere, and braid a bit loose with all the volume it has lost.Â
âMy, my, traveler,â Heizou teases, raising his fingers so that he can trace Aetherâs swollen lips. âHow sentimental, getting worked up over a mere confession like that.âÂ
âIt is no mere confession,â Aether responds, frowning, but he just canât convey indignance. Not right now.Â
âYou started it.âÂ
âI didnât expect you to return it.âÂ
âThatâs a pitiful shortcoming on your part, my dear partner.â Heizou exaggerates a sigh. âI am almost disappointed.âÂ
âWellâŠâ Aether breathes out, long and dare Heizou say, concerning, before he meets Heizouâs eyes again. âI suppose I didnât have a certain detective around to keep me on my toes.âÂ
Heizou gulps. âOh, AetherâŠâÂ
âJust⊠donât tell me to stay away from you again. Please.âÂ
After everything, Heizou still canât tell Aether that mere sight of him was enough to have him regret the break-up immediately. That he selfishly held onto the grudge, because he prided himself on it. That even when he found Aether unconscious in the Test of Courage, he was stubborn, until working together again broke Heizouâs strategically constructed dams one after another.Â
Until he realized sharing him is, always, the better alternative than losing him.Â
âI love you,â Heizou says again, instead, and revels in the way Aether leans down on him, stray blond strands falling on his face like a golden curtain. And he kisses him, slow and tender, yet exploring deeper the more he presses down Heizouâs body with his own.Â
Clothes are discarded - not all of them, they have so many accessories and so little patience, but Heizou unclasps Aetherâs cape who in turn gets rid of Heizouâs shirt, barely ridding themselves of pants before meeting each other again. Calling it not sex but making love is extremely cheesy, but man alive, there is a distinction. Heizou has been around the block quite a few times, whether itâs to relieve some stress or go the distance with an attractive stranger that guards precious information. Still, sex is always the best when love is a factor, even when uglier emotions are involved. Anger? Jealousy? Betrayal? As long as love is there, tainted it might be, intimacy beats the best of casual sex.
Perhaps Heizou is more of a romantic than he likes to pretend.Â
Oh, well. What are you gonna do?
He throws his head back and chants Aetherâs name like a prayer - hell, itâs not like heâs ever cared much about archons, anyway. As his neck arches, Aether catches his choker with a finger, biting down at the sensitive skin that blends into his shoulder because apparently Heizou isnât being loud enough for him.
Heizou takes his revenge by rolling both of them out of the bed with one swift move. His family probably didnât intend him to use their clanâs martial art prowess for such matters but tough luck. As he rides Aether out of his mind, he shoves his digits into the travelerâs mouth, just to add to the mess beneath him - just because he can.Â
No one else can have this. No one can have him like this. Something similar, yes, obviously, quite often in fact - but it will never be the same. The love Aether has for Heizou is only for Heizou.Â
âSay it again,â he commands, breathless - only for Aether to make an incoherent noise around his fingers, and despite himself, Heizou snorts.Â
Aether chokes, something akin to a laugh. Heizou pulls his hand away, chuckling along. Maybe heâs ruined the mood a little. So what? This is what they do. Flirt a little, fuck a little, laugh a little. Repeat, a little differently, but with certainty.
Thatâs what makes it special.Â
âYouâre free,â Heizou manages, gagged around the amusement and his edging orgasm. âSo say it again, now.âÂ
âI love you.âÂ
And thatâs all he needs from his beloved partner.Â

A Demon!Himmel AU
The Hero party finally confronts the mastermind behind the colosseum.
Snippet:
t was well after midnight when the buzz of activity quieted down in the colosseum. Himmel, Heiter, Eisen and Frieren decided it was time to sneak out of their shared room and go investigate. They opened the door with a creak and stepped into the dark hallways. With the absence of people and light, the stone corridors looked sinister and put the group on edge. Their steps echoed through the empty halls no matter how much they tried to soften them. Guided by a tiny light conjured on the tip of Frierenâs staff and Himmelâs excellent night vision to scout ahead, they reached the double doors.
âThis is the place where they brought the man earlier today.â â Heiter confirmed.
âThese are iron-plated. They definitely donât want to have people coming in.â â Eisen remarked.
Himmel hummed in agreement and was about to say something before a slight breeze tickled his nose, on that breeze, he smelled blood. His honed sense of smell immediately locked onto the scent and he began stiffing the air. The others watched as he slowly moved closer before stopping right at the door. Either the seal on that door was not as tight as they though orâŠ
Himmel experimentally took hold on one of the handles and slightly tugged it. The door moved ever so slightly.
âIt is unlocked.â â Himmel said before stepping back.
The door opened slowly, behind it was a long, dark staircase that led down. The lamps that lined the wall were all extinguished, not that it would help much by brightening the eerie staircase.
âThis is way too easy.â â Heiter pointed out.
âIt is almost as if they are actually inviting us to go down there.â â Eisen said with a frown.
âYes, it seems the enemy is aware of us looking around.â â Frieren gripped her staff tighter.
âWell, if they are already aware and waiting for us, then we best not wait around here.â Himmel drew his sword âEveryone, be careful. We do not know what might wait for us below.â
The party descended into the darkness. The staircase went down farther than they expected, the winding steps and shadows made it seem like it stretched forever. Himmel was hyperaware, his instincts buzzing in the background, the scent of blood was getting more and more pronounced with every step, with it were traces of other things like iron, herbs and something that reminded him of rotten eggs. The others had not seemed to notice the smell, yet, but he was sure that soon they would begin to. After a while, they reach the bottom of the staircase, there laid a steel door that was slightly ajar.
âJook, they even left this door slightly open. Are they really trying to-.â Heiter took a couple of steps closer before he stopped dead in his tracks and gagged âEUGH! By the goddess, what is that smell?â â the priest pinched his nose before moving back and coughing.
âBlood, rot⊠a lot of it.â â Eisen said, his hands starting to tremble ever so slightly under the cloak.
Frieren covered her nose with her sleeve and did not say anything, but a deep frown formed on her face. Their suspicions were proven true in the worst way possible. There was no way the outcome of whatever sinister plot was happening here could end well. The group exchanged knowing looks before they finally passed through the door.
Frieren and Heiter had work to do. With Himmel and Eisen participating in the tournament, keeping the attention to them and also trying to get more information from the participants, the priest and mage were left on their own for most of the time. In the days they spent in the colosseum, Frieren had found several layers of different barriers covering the entire building, they messed with the mana perception and were tightly intertwined, forming a web throughout the building. It was clear t would not be easy to investigate, so after checking every place they, as guests, could go and finding nothing, the priest and mage decided to sneak around in some of the restricted areas.
âNothing here. It is just another storage room.â â Heiter sighed.
âDid you check-.â â Frieren began.
âYes, I checked for hidden passages and secret doors, nothing like that, just old cleaning supplies and trash. How about you?â â Heiter cut her off, already knowing what sheâd ask.
âNothing much. There definitely is more of this building below us but I donât want to risk using more mana for the spell, it may alert people of our presence here.â
The barriers preventing them from reading the mana clearly was also what allowed them to be sneaky. As long as they did not use too much mana at once the barrier would also mask their usage of magic.
âI see, there surely is more to this place than we initially thought and still no trace of that little girlâs brother.â â Heiter put a hand to his chin.
The roar of the crowd echoed throughout the halls, reminding them the matches for the tournament were still going.
