honestly just something i've been thinking about? literally how is shin's will to live SO strong,, like everything about his life screams depressed millennial but like?? he wants to live so badly?? and for what?? like im genuinely surprised that he tried so hard to survive instead of just fucking giving up,, like whats up with that? -h
fhdhfbfshf ok first of all, thank you for always giving me questions that are genuinely food for thought. secondly, i’ll answer to the best of my ability!!
So, I think Shin is pretty clearly characterized by victimhood and fear. This is how he’s been throughout all of the story, and throughout a good portion of his life; in adolescence, he was pretty clearly abused and taken advantage of by Midori, and this shaped his persona throughout the rest of his life. Midori made him weak and obedient, conditioning him to always perceive himself as a useless person whom the strong take advantage of. This is why, when he is informed he has no chance of survival, his first step to combat this is to shed all semblance of the person he used to be, who he considered weak, and to assume the personality of the strong one who manipulated and took advantage of him. Shin is guided by his fear of Midori, the fear of strength that came as a result, and a deep resentment for his former self. I think, then, that Shin is likely guided to survival due to his resentment for how he used to be. The years of high school where Midori manipulated him were crucial years in his development that he can never get back again, and he loathes how weak they made him (as can be evidenced by his horrified reaction to his AI). This loathing culminated to a breaking point when he saw the percentage papers, and I think that him assuming the “stronger” persona was not only a safety precaution for himself but an attempt to make amends for how much Midori had broken him. He had to survive in order to protect the version of himself so shattered by abuse and to give himself a second chance at strength.
This, I think, is why Kanna is the only person for whom Shin is willing to sacrifice himself. For a few days, Shin got the opportunity to assume the role of a manipulator, a role that had always been used to subjugate him. Of course, it wasn’t out of malicious intent or resentment for Kanna; he wanted to survive, and he used the grieving little girl as a pawn in his plans. But, over time, I think he realized truly how much of himself he saw in Kanna: a weak, easily-manipulated person who believes themself to be worthless. His taking advantage of her brought him to realize how similar they were, and thus he offers up his life for her. He couldn’t protect himself from Midori, he couldn’t protect himself from the “stronger” people of the world. But he still has a chance to redeem himself, and he still has a chance to help Kanna avoid succumbing to the strong. His sacrifice brings Kanna closer to the person he always wanted to be- someone who is stronger and more confident in their abilities without being cruel or manipulative- and it brings him the opportunity to do what he never could do for himself and protect the weak. It’s a beautiful moment, and I think it shows how much of his desperation for survival was born from a need to protect and redeem his weaker self.
