So uh....my brother fricking collapsed at like 5 in the morning??
He was walking—I assume—the bathroom, and I'm half-asleep since sleep is not very common these days. I just hear a loud freaking crash, and I obviously, am wide awake. Now I'm afraid something happened to my grandma, so I'm getting up (her room is right beside the one I sleep in) but then my mom comes running and asks what happened, and I hear my older brother go 'I don't know.' Now, I don't go because I know he hates attention but I sit up and listen because obviously I'm worried. This is the same older brother who threw up in the bathroom and came out, realised I was sitting right there and made me promise not to tell anyone. My dad comes out too because it was really freaking loud and helps my brother up and takes him back to his room. He's not fasting today and I would've probably yelled at him if he insisted on fasting (which he did but my dad shut him down.)
So uh I didn't type this out last night since I was worried about him and was trying to sleep (impossible) after they got him back to bed. Little brother migrated rooms and came to sleep with me.

I was previously whining that we never get to see how Nerat came to be the flaming monstrosity we see in-game. I wanted a novel (or a few novels) describing his rise to power and all the bloody adventures he must have had along the way. Since the world was ignoring my pleas for a Nerat-centric series of novels I wrote an abridged version myself.
If you want to see my version of how “the youngest scion of House Nerat” ended up betraying his family and becoming one of the most monstrous Archons to walk Terratus, you can skip the rest of the fic and dive right into the flashback.
I based my version on what Nerat and Mark say. I trust Mark’s version more, Nerat is too full of lies. ;D
You can see the text from the game under the cut if you’re curious.
Mark:
"He was some noble heir from some... swampy nowhere fiefdom that was next on Kyros' list of places to enslave. His family took up arms to defend their lands from Kyros."
"Well, that was their intention at least. Nerat sold out his family - tortured them and interrogated them all and gave the troop movements to servants of the Archon of Misery."
Nerat:
"In our youth, we were the youngest scion of House Nerat. These would be the early years of Kyros' reign, if numbers make any difference to your fragile matter."
"We did what came naturally, of course. We took initiative."
"Before any accusations could fly, we had our family driven to the city square and pilloried among the masses of Kyros' unfaithful."
"Before the shocked eyes of the community, we interrogated them one by one - flaying their skins with tanner's knives and putting their loyalties to the test. Father. Mother. Sisters. Aunts. All of them questioned. All of them found guilty."
[Fatebinder: "What city was this?"]
"In no tongue your ear would recognize, we called it Waterlog Marsh. You won't find our homeland on maps - but that is a story for another day."
[Fatebinder: "Were they guilty?"]
"We don't remember. We remember choosing to survive, and we remember the sound of skin peeling away from muscle. The rest was... formality. It was all a demonstration for the Overlord - 'this one can be trusted'."
"A message that was gratefully received."
"Our devotion to Kyros was the terror and pride of the community. The son of Nerat had grown to something greater than our family name. In time, the Archon of Misery heard tell of our deeds, and invited us into a better life."
"He took it upon himself to be our instructor. He taught us the beauty of agony - how to slide the knife just so, how to divide flesh with no mortal wound, and how to inflict waking nightmares upon our foes. No more of our clumsy, blood-soaked efforts for spectacle. True torture is a sensory performance, staged for an audience of one. He made us an artist."
"We were proficient at our work. Our name spread beyond the boundaries of the child Empire as people whispered it in private, or shrieked it in fear. Whole galleries were erected to display our accomplishments, which were studied and interpreted by head-scratching scholars."
"Our talent with the blade, rope and saw grew so renowned that Kyros' faithful and unfaithful alike believed we could steal truths from their minds with little more than a stare."
"And in time, life imitated art. Such is the beauty of Kyros' domain - that the remarkable reign over the mediocre, and their talents are recognized, nourished, perfected."
[Fatebinder: "You tortured your own family?"]
"We tortured enemies of Kyros for the safety of the empire."
"It was our ardent hope that someone would recognize the justness of our act, the uncompromising need to carve a place for ourselves outside of our unfortunate family."
