Pretty much, yeah. HBS stands for “Harry Benjamin Syndrome,” which is what HBSers tried to rename transness to. The name comes from Dr. Harry Benjamin, who formalized transition care and defined “transsexualism” in an extremely cisheterosexist way that included the foundations of literally every gatekeeping argument since then - HBSers want to stick to Dr. Benjamin’s definition and hyperpathologize transness.

as a modern identifier it’s been associated with people whose beliefs are rather extreme and who deny the existence of gay and bi trans people as well as nonbinary people. but that’s my experience from this discourse a few years ago, where the people who identified as hbsers were vocally angry with truscum for allowing these people.

btw i don’t like to get involved in any medical/non-medical trans discourse bc as far as i’m concerned people can do what they want and hrt should be easy to obtain since it’s an individual decision that has a lot of factors and isn’t even exclusive to trans ppl. i lurked a lot when i was a teenager bc i was just figuring out gender stuff and all the infighting definitely didn’t help, but at least the resources on dysphoria did.

Modern? It’s 13 years old. It just endorses and relies on trans politics from 1955.

And yes, a lot of (but not all) HBSers are violently queerantagonistic; it’s a natural consequence of the “otherwise normal” part of their politics.

(And no, in my experience and those of my NB headmates and partners, truscum and transmeds are not particularly accepting of NB people. Extremely, violently the opposite of that, in fact.)

I didn’t realize that “HBSer” was a description of a particular gender and sexual orientation. I thought it was descriptive of a political framework deriving largely from Dr. Benjamin’s definition of transsexualism as laid out in The Transsexual Phenomenon, that describes transness as an unfortunate neurological condition or birth defect in an otherwise “normal” person, and has a very strong tendency to use wildly outmoded terms like “transsexual” and “I wish trans people didn’t exist.”

Truscum are kids who have been duped into swallowing every last drop of Harry Benjamin Syndrome ideology except the bits that personally apply to them.
