Thoughts on the Seven Sins
This was a difficult one, and feels like the most drastic redesign of the sins. I tried to stick with specific design elements while also keeping it recognizable as the character. Hopefully I balanced it well enough.
—Design Notes—
Canon: I heard that Ozzie was supposed to be designed after a rooster(is it because he's a cock? Is the pun intentional??). And I never would have guessed that. I can sort of see it once I know, but it's very vague. So I wanted to lean more into that.
Cockatrice: I figured it would be good to model him after a cockatrice. It has all the same elements of the rooster theme, while also having a more demonic vibe. A cockatrice is basically a chicken with a reptilian back half. It's described as having a snake tail, which I think is supposed to mean the actual tail part of the snake and not the head, but the monstrous aspect is more clear if it's the head. The description actually made me think of dinosaurs, particularly ones like the velociraptor. So I incorporated a little of that too.
Three heads: In demonology, Asmodeus is sometimes described as having three heads: One of a bull, another of a ram, and one of a man or ogre. I replaced the man/ogre with chicken to fit the other design elements.
The way canon incorporates the other two heads is interesting to me, but I sorta locked myself out of that. I thought about putting them on the waddles(I could not remember what those were called for awhile and just called them gobbles because it felt like a suitable word for them), but I did not like how it looked.
Eventually, I had the idea to put them on his shoulders like pauldrons. Then, to simplify, they're like living tattoos in his glamour form. In his full form, they're more prominent. Canon made the ram head a goat, and I just returned it to a ram, which I just realized is sorta heart shaped.
Clothes: I wanted that pimp/playboy look, but with some degree of professionalism. But I also didn't want to just dress him like Valentino. But 70s fashion just has all the right vibes. The infamous Rock-a-Doodle did not help me get any different inspiration. I had to look up gay club fashion for this, and it was so uncomfortable for me. I'm so ace, y'all. I had to warn my husband that I was looking at weird stuff, because I didn't want him to just catch me and think I was suddenly lusting after unattainable gay men(I'm a woman) or something.😅I swear, it was research so I could draw a slutty chicken.
In the end, I sort of like his "formal" look the best. But maybe that's personal bias.
—Theology—
Asmodeus
Lust: (Latin: Luxuria, meaning extravagance). The English word is associated with sexual desire, possibly because of Matthew 5:27-28. The English word was once a general term for desire, and the Greek word used in the verses doesn't have any explicit sexual connotation. The same Greek word is used in the Septuagint in the commandment to not covet.
Defining lust gets difficult, because when we don't focus it on sexual desire, it overlaps with the other sins a lot. But I don't want to limit it to that. So, I've settled on:
Passionate desire: intense longing, immoral, selfish, disordered desire Misuse- abuse, often of something otherwise good Dehumanization and objectification of others luxury, opulence, high quality lechery- offensive or excessive [sexual] desire and indulgence
Opposite Virtue: Chastity chastity, prudence, respect, discipline, self control, abstinence
Gluttony, Greed, and Lust have very similar elements, but different focuses.
Gluttony: focused on overindulging in what is available. Not so much on taking initiative to obtain or keep anything. It is more opportunistic.
Greed: focused on acquiring and possessing. Hoarding behaviors.
Lust: focused on passionate desire and misuse/abuse.
