39. Marky - Harry Brown (2009)
A Walk in the Sun premiered on 3 December 1945, before wider release on Christmas day.
Based on Harry Brown's 1944 novel (Brown joined the Army in 1941 and wrote a humorous column for Yank magazine during WWII), the film is both highly stylized (with songs serving as a Greek chorus at times, as well as narration) and realistic in its portrayal of cynical, war weary soldiers confused and cut off in the "fog of war." The film was a commercial success, but received some criticism for its "literary preoccupations."
Directed by Lewis Milestone, the cast includes Dana Andrews, Lloyd Bridges (who served in the US Coast Guard), Steve Brodie, Richard Conte (who had briefly served in the Army but was discharged due to eye problems), Huntz Hall (who served in the Army but was also discharged due to eye problems), John Ireland, Norman Lloyd, and Herbert Rudley, most of whom were in their mid-30s when the film was made (the median age of an Army soldier was 26).
