“Oh this is a breath of fresh air right now! Gotta love a bit of Dolly. Not my usual listening fare of course (prog rock, Krautrock, weirdy electronic noise), but you can’t fault her as a consummate performer and professional. Not to mention philanthropist. One of the true musical legends we have left. . This compilation (from 2002) was bought to replace a greatest hits I had on cassette. At least I thought it was mine, until my ex took it, along with the rest of her belongings. I bought this specific compilation because it was one of the few that had Harper Valley PTA on it, a great song with the homely wit and heavy dose of reality that country music is often so good at. It’s one of a few on here which are covers, though like the Carpenters, she has made totally her own. Other classic Parton tracks such as D.I.V.O.R.C.E. and Here You Come Again. . However, she’s never been merely an interpreter or just a pretty face, or Dumb Blonde as she self-deprecatingly described herself in her first hit back in 1967 – not included here. Amongst this quality fare her own songwriting stands out: 9 to 5 is a fantastic pop song, featuring her nails emulating the tapping of typewriters. “Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen / Pour myself a cup of ambition” are a great set of lyrics and opening lines. Then there’s the uber-ballad, I Will Always Love You, written by Parton in 1973 when it made No 1 on the Country Chart. She turned down Elvis Presley’s interest in covering it due to Colonel Tom’s rather unorthodox approach to sharing royalties with the songwriter, but Whitney Houston took it to the top of the charts again in 1992 as a spinoff from the film The Bodyguard. . And then, there’s always Jolene. Without doubt one of the best pop songs ever written. Period.” .
