Episode 2 (Intro / Cold Open) - The Scoreboard
1 WEEK AGO
Monday night hung soft and warm in the Manhattan loft. String lights draped along the headboard cast a gentle golden glow that mixed with the shimmer of the city skyline beyond the tall window. Evelyn lay sprawled across the rumpled sheets in an oversized cream sweater, idly scrolling through her phone while soft jazz played in the background.
At the foot of the bed, Bobby sat cross-legged against the wall with a thick textbook balanced in one hand and a neon green highlighter in the other. She forced herself through one final round of revision for tomorrowâs quiz, marking pages already crowded with notes and scribbles.
Bobby had always preferred studying in Evelynâs room. The panoramic view and clean, minimal space beat the cluttering mess of her own room any day, even if it meant squeezing onto the cramped single bed while Evelyn casually used her lap as a footrest like it was the most natural thing in the world.
When Evelyn caught Bobby pressing her face against the pages of her book, she immediately set her phone aside and lifted her legs off her lap.
âYou good, Bobby?â she asked gently.
Bobby lifted her reading glasses and rubbed her tired eyes. âYeah, just a little sleepy, I guess.â She adjusted her posture before adding, âThis coffee-detox thingy has really taken a toll on me since I started it. I feel like a grandma now without caffeine firing up my veins.â
âWell, how about some brain exercise then?â Evelyn suggested, holding up her phone. âBuzzfeedâs Smash or Pass, Guilty Pleasure edition. You game?â
Bobby glanced up from her book and let out a small sigh. âSure, why not? I can use a little break.â
A satisfied smile crept onto Evelynâs face as she pushed herself up against the headboard, ready to moderate the game.
âAlright, first entry: Nate Jacobs from Euphoria.â
âHard pass,â Bobby replied immediately. âHis character is literally a walking red flag, and I donât even watch the show to have known that. Thatâs how bad it is.â
âWell, I guess itâs called guilty pleasure for a reason,â said Evelyn. âAnd you canât tell me you donât have a thing for bad boys either. I know who all your exes are.â
Bobby shot her a side-eye. âIs that a shade?â
âNot necessarily.â Evelyn grinned. âMoving on. Tyler Durden from Fight Club.â
âAnother hard pass,â Bobby said with a breath. âBelieve it or not, nothing makes me go drier than a man with toxic masculinity issues. Even if itâs prime motherfucking Brad Pitt.â
âI agree. Couldnât have said it any better,â Evelyn replied, smirking as she scrolled upward. âNext oneââ
âWoah, woah, hold on a sec. What was that about?â
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. âWhat was what?â
âYou were smirking when you said that like you didnât believe me. Are you saying that Iâm a fraud or something?â
âIâmâŠpretty sure I didnât say that,â Evelyn replied, struggling not to laugh. âAlthoughâŠâ
âAlthough what?â Bobby snapped, eyes widening. âYou goofballâgive me that phone. Let me make this about you insteadââ
âOkay, noâBobby, calm down, Iâm just messing with youââ
Suddenly, the rapid thud of footsteps echoed down the hallway before the bedroom door swung open.
âGuys, we got one!â Liv yelled excitedly. âWe found our new tenant.â
Bobby and Evelyn immediately paused their tussling and turned toward the doorway, where Liv stood flushed and breathless with excitement. She tossed her phone onto the bed, and Bobby caught it smoothly in one hand while Evelyn scooted closer to look over her shoulder.
âThe name is Daniel S., twenty-five years old, Duke masterâs graduate in Finance, loves the beach, and potentially single,â Liv announced with the cadence of a corporate recruiter.
Bobby stared at the screen, frowning. âDamn. And you got all that from a single hi?â
âWelcome to the golden age of tech, my friends,â Liv replied proudly. âIf you click on his bio, heâs literally got links to all his socials. Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, even his goddamn LinkedInâand I personally find that to be a green flag in itself. The dudeâs got nothing to hide, and I respect it.â
Bobby tapped on the Instagram link, drawing Evelyn even closer over her shoulder as the profile loaded on-screen.
Needless to say, they were both impressed.
Daniel had the kind of effortlessly polished look that belonged on a finance influencerâs Instagram feedâclean-shaven, broad shoulders, at least 6-foot tall, sharp jawline, warm smile, the whole package.
Livâs face lit up at their reactions. âDo you see the hype now?â
âOkay, but are we just gonna brush over the fact that this dude is, well⊠a dude?â Bobby said, finally pulling the conversation back to reality. âThis is an all-girls house, Liv, in case you havenât noticed.â
âWell, not anymore,â Liv replied playfully. âWhat Iâm saying is we should embrace the fact that a hot guy actually wants to live here while also taking full advantage of it with the current position we have.â
Bobby stared at her deadpan before turning toward Evelyn. âIs she being serious right now? Because I honestly canât tell.â
Evelyn shrugged. âHm. But heâs cute though. Thereâs no denying that.â
âOh, wow. Seriously, Eve?â Bobby reacted dramatically. âSo youâd agree with bringing a guy into the house just because heâs cute? And I thought Iâm the one with issues here.â
Liv watched them in amusement. âIf you havenât already, do yourself a favor and keep scrolling until you see the beach picture with his dog. Maybe thatâll help change your mind.â
Bobby scoffed. âThatâs ridiculous. Weâre not gonna make an exception in this place just becauseâOh boy.â She paused mid-sentence, eyes widening at the screen. âAre you sure thatâs still the same person?â
âIt is,â Liv confirmed proudly. âIn fact, go ahead and zoom in on that part if you want to, because I already did. Weâre talking prime Brad Pitt level of fine here, ladies and gents. I mean, ladies.â
Bobby and Evelyn stared at the post for a few seconds longer before slowly exchanging a glance. A dangerous kind of agreement settled silently between them.
Liv leaned against the doorway with a knowing smirk.
âSo,â she asked, âare we doing this or not?â
