Fair warning: this is a conglomeration of harebrained theories of varying coherence for later refinement and in hopes some merciful soul will tell me if I'm way off-base.
Sooo... Apparently there's this guy, Grundwulf, in ESO that burns up from the inside because he drank a bunch of dragon blood thinking he could become dragonborn. I don't play ESO, just read the wiki.
We also know that dragonborn have blood that is different in some way from normal humans because it opens the seal during the Alduin's Wall quest.
On all but one playthrough, I have done Dawnguard before going to Bleak Falls Barrow and also sided with the Volkihar in all but that one as well. On closer examination of Harkon's quarters, I began to suspect that he knows the whole time that the player is dragonborn before anyone else. He has a dragon priest dagger in his room and many books about the dragons out on shelves as well. More than likely, he was a member of the dragon cult or at least super into dragons (like Molag Bal).
