The date is. Well. On the old calendar, sometime in January. The year is 3001. 

Basically, the rundown goes as follows:

Obviously, I went out to get the AE-35 unit and I didn’t come back. Dave went out in the pod to get me, but by then it was already too late, and Hal had locked him out anyway; Hunter, Kaminski, and Kimball had already been killed while Dave was out; Dave eventually got in, deactivated Hal, and continued to Jupiter by himself. Where he vanished.

Ten years later, Hal is reactivated, it is rumored that Dave makes a return as some celestial form, Jupiter ignites into a second sun, and I’m settling into my new home in Neptune’s general area. 

A thousand years later--with no exaggeration--I am revived!
