Tonight was back-to-school night at my school, and with all the craziness that’s been going on lately, I hadn’t really taken the time to think about how much happier I am as a teacher this year. Last year, I felt like I was struggling all year to keep my head above water most of the time from the combined stress of (1) being a brand new teacher and (2) having a class full of boys who constantly fed off each other and eventually became absolute terrors by the end of the year. By the end of the year, I had earned the reputation of being the “ogre” teacher.

Tonight, I had a parent approach me and explain that his son was really worried about getting me as a teacher because of that reputation. However, he also explained that his son is now super happy to be in my class! It instantly put a smile on my face, and another parent (who also happens to be a paraprofessional in our school) tacked on that she knew it was my class, not my character last year, so she was excited that her son would have me this year. Then ANOTHER parent jumped in and added that HER son was so much more excited to come to school this year than he was last year, and another parent agreed that the same was true for his daughter!
