My 25 years of palaeoart chronology…

the way that Sloan specifically says "Terminatrixes, or whatever the fuck the plural was" feels like a setup for Clair or some other grammar-conscious character (do the Chicagoans ever mention them? i don't remember) to refer to them as Terminatrices later on. but nope, Clair doesn't correct Bloomington, and even Kyubey calls them Terminatrixes. i always thought that was a missed opportunity. was it? did you think about it and then decide against it, or was Sloan's phrasing just meant to comment on how "Terminatrixes" is a weird-looking word and had nothing to do with it ""actually"" being spelled Terminatrices? (for the record, i don't think Terminatrixes is wrong, everybody recognizes it as the plural of an english word ending in x, but the pedantic types who know their latin might object.)
The issue of Sloan and Clair's use of words is something that has interested me on this reread of Fargo. Through the first few chapters, there were multiple instances of Sloan using a word (usually in her close third person narration, not necessarily her dialogue) that seemed "too elevated" for her gruff, unintellectual disposition. I had been flagging (just flagging, not changing) these instances for potential reconsideration, but then I reached this line in Chapter 12:
As they stared at the tear-streaked face of Omaha, with her cracked glasses and bleeding wrist and mousy sunken eyes and sallow skin, Sloan realized what it was. This girl was not Clair Ibsen, no. She was another victim, another pawn in Clair's schemes, because that was all anyone was to Clair. Clair had found the most pathetic, most insecure, most lonely girl in existence, a girl whose magical power was to disappear entirely (what kind of wish would cause that power, Sloan wondered. What kind of self-effacement could manifest itself in that way). Who knew what honeyed words dredged from the depths of Clair's broad vocabulary had been so pristinely elocuted to make Omaha think of her as a friend.
In this line, the phrase "so pristinely elocuted" comes off as clearly sarcastic; Sloan is mocking Clair's vocabulary. But this line does indicate that Sloan KNOWS these elevated vocabulary words (there's also the fact that Sloan went to the same upper middle class prep school as Clair, and thus received an elevated education).
Not long after, in Chapter 14, Clair's introduction, we get this exchange:
"We're fine," [Bloomington] said before Woodbury could answer. "Come on, skip the pleasantries already, we get it. You didn't call us over if it wasn't important." "Weren't important," said Minneapolis. "The conditional phrase requires the subjunctive tense." "Okay, Herr Gestapo."
These lines imply to me that Sloan's occasional use of words like "meretricious" (and the fact that she consistently follows the subjunctive tense grammar rule mentioned above) is a byproduct of Clair's influence, that she has somehow rubbed off on Sloan, perhaps by frequently correcting her like she does to Bloomington.
This is an interesting character note for me because it's not something I intended. Sloan using elevated vocabulary words on occasion is a function of me, the author, not always modulating my own vocabulary to the level of the speaker (this is something I'm much better about now, but it's present perhaps much more noticeably in Modern Cannibals, where attention disordered/slacker extraordinaire Z. Coulter will often drop exceptionally poetical lines out of nowhere). In short, it was something I perhaps didn't intend to do, but reading back, the interpretation works, and is in many ways more interesting than if Sloan used consistently lowered diction and grammar.
Regarding Terminatrixes specifically, there's another interesting thing I noticed. In Chapter 6, Sloan says this:
Generally Kyubey slated those types for termination. Whenever girls became "dangerous" (although Kyubey probably cared more about the fact that crazy chicks were harder to manipulate), the rat bastard posted a grief cube bounty on their heads. Some girls made livings as so-called terminators , traveling the country in search of loonies to cull.
I'm still reading through the story, so I'd like to see how Sloan reacts with Sepulveda appears, but right now it seems as though Sloan would know the real term and would likely use it here (Bloomington and Woodbury know it, after all).
As for Terminatrices, both Clair and the Chicagoans should probably be using that term over Terminatrixes. The lack of it is mostly an error on my part, caused primarily by ignorance or carelessness. As I progress through my edit, I'll keep an eye out for instances of that and flag them for potential correction in the DX.

At the start of the Neoproterozoic, the first animals would emerge, and after surviving another series of ice ages, we would see the first complex life, although for now it is still very simple and seemingly alien. It is still a subject of debate how these creatures fit into the tree of life. Are they the earliest ancestors of modern life? Are they simply an entirely separate branch that died off after this period? Scientists still aren't sure. I may do a separate post about the bizarre fauna of the Ediacaran period.
At this point we're already around 4 billion years into the story of Earth, with only about 500 million years to the present. Tomorrow we will be exploring a whole new eon.
For all the long eons of the Earth, the shores have remained empty. But now, something is stirring in the depths, and after each storm that rages across the seemingly barren world, strange creatures wash up on the beach. In death, they announce to the land the first animal life in the Ediacaran sea.
I've wanted to draw the strange Ediacaran life that pre-dated even the Cambrian explosion for a while now, but had been struggling to find an interesting way to depict them. With little behaviour to show, I find Ediacaran paleoart has a bit of a tendency to end up looking like a pretty aquarium with all the organisms nicely arranged together for the viewer's enjoyment. I landed on painting them washing up on the empty shore. It's also me experimenting with watercolours instead of my usual coloured pencils.
