Okabu is a PlayStation 3 Indie developed PlayStation Network download game you likely haven't played or heard of and thanks to the abysmal store redesign a few years back, you likely don't even know it's on there. While at first glance you might think this is a Japanese made game it in fact comes from a United Kingdom developer studio called HandCircus.
Okabu is a truly unique game, the heroes the Cloud Whales have an eco theme and use bright, bold and colourful character design. Where as the Doza's the villains in this tale use a very different more menacing and grim look with an industrial theme. Gameplay wise it's a mixture of puzzle, adventure, platforming with the handling of a racing game for the whales. It sounds a bit odd, but plays really well, the game also includes online leader boards and couch co-op play. Very much a title for all the family to play together and enjoy. It's hard to fault and if you own a PS3, we highly recommend this title. The African theme music is a real treat to listen to as this style of music in video games is often rarely used.

Okabu is a PlayStation game that should get a lot more love than it does, at first glance you might think Okabu is a Japanese developed game. However. HandCircus the studio behind it are in fact British. Okabu uses a wonder a art style and design that sees the player take control of a cloud whale in order to save the day. It’s not a perfect game but very enjoyable in co-op, a rare example from the recent era that supports it on the same console. A very creative and original title it largely when unnoticed when it was released on PSN. A lack of a Japanese release can’t have helped it either.
If you own a PlayStation 3 and haven’t picked this title up we highly recommend it. We borrowed these images from Gamespot but there is a great interview with the developers over at Gamasutra about the development of Okabu.
Looking back, our biggest takeaway on the planning side is that we should have really examined the scope of the game more at an earlier stage to better balance the ambitions we had with the resources that were available. For a downloadable title, 12 to 16 hours is on the large side, and it still would have felt meaty enough if we'd cut some of the content. This would have allowed us to reallocate resources to polish the core game and given us the breathing room we needed.
