their relationship by all accounts was pretty tight, but the touring group was disbanded due to the beatles anthology project, which put any other solo work on hold. hamish and paul didn't play together again after '91.

One of the problems of Paul Young's career after his triumphs of the 80's and the early 90's can be traced to Between Two Fires, which, ironically, doesn't betray the sonic hallmarks of the era as much as the preceding LPs. However, we can tell he had the best intention with the album, he wanted to branch out, but I fear he let his production be polished too much. Sadly, he didn't go the way of sophisti-pop, his voice would suit the genre perfectly, he sort of remained within his pop wheelhouse, which wouldn't be bad, had he not done that by removing several of his idiosyncratic elements. Paul Young's previous discs showed he reaches his best, when he includes the unusual in his tunes, though he slowly abandoned this approach later on.
