       --------JOSIAH JUST SHRUGGED HIS SHOULDERS, he doesn’t really think too much about sins or anything dealing with them ,. ‘ i don’t really care to think on my sins too much - but i’m pretty sure they would lead me to some dark places.. ‘ IF I LET THEM he thought as his sentence trailed off - talk of sins reminds him too much of his father - and the punishments whenever he thought josiah so much as looked like he was doing anything dealing with them. ( ‘ you’re a vessel of the living christ, isaac - don’t let it happen again. )

                 --------- THE QUESTION CAUGHT HIM COMPLETELY OFF GUARD, he should have known by now that when it comes to hale you should expect to be challenge whenever. this time is no different - and josiah had no idea how to respond, couldn’t even come up with a witty retort - anything - but the question itself did make him pause enough to think - to wonder - does he punish himself? -- no - no that’s not - no. there’s no way that the deputy punishes himself whenever something out of his control happens. that -- no - he doesn’t punish himself. he doesn’t -- DOES HE? ( you do - you always have ). -- have i?

Instantly Ethan’s chest ignited with a fiery rage. The swirl of conflicting emotions in his gut made him want to wretch. Oh, if he could command the respect and adoration Joseph did, that would be one thing  — but this? This was something else. This was disdain. Yes, he was like his father but only in the worst ways, the ways he loathed. Hale’s words made Ethan want to slide out of his skin like a shedding snake.

“Do not compare me to him,” he growled, practically lunging at Hale as he stepped towards him. If his fury were visible steam would’ve shot from his ears. His muscles flexed, his body tense, and his shirt responded by shifting across his chest. He was in a battle with himself not to lose his temper entirely, but his temper had been on a winning streak lately. Temper 5, Ethan 0.

He balled his hands into fists. With a loud thud he slammed one into the wall. Yet again Ethan had responded to a molehill with a mountain, but from his perspective on the ground every little bump was Mount Everest. 

A look of easy-going indifference from where he’s crouched at Hale’s side is all he gives to acknowledge the Deputy’s off-color question. He’s learned how to ignore a great deal of teasing and ribbing throughout the years practicing his trade-- a great deal, indeed. It glides past him like water off a duck's back and his attention is once again settling on the gushing wound. Face close enough to inhale the all too familiar scents of blood, sweat, and gunpowder. This time, at least, the telltale odor of infection setting in isn’t present.

“On your back, please,” Patrick says calmly as he rises to his feet and gestures towards one of the beds, all of them mercifully empty today. “And remove any restrictive clothing or jewelry you may be wearing, if you will.”

He busies himself with gathering the necessary instruments and disinfecting his hands thoroughly, then. Each movement punctilious and no slower or faster than it needs to be. Just right. Patrick knows urgency and he knows harmlessness-- this is neither.
