The bar lights were dimmed, much like many of the other places that were still open this time of night. The man ducked his head and strolled casually toward the back corner, so as to not draw attention to himself. A lone figure sat at a booth there. He had the hood of his jacket pulled up and he was dressed in all black, his facial features hidden save for the slight reflection of light off his glasses.
“Mister Brody, I presume?”
Chase nodded and sat down, casting barely a glance over his shoulder to make sure he wasn’t being watched.
“Tell me about this...person you want me to find.”
Chase’s attention was drawn back to the hacker sitting across from him. Because that’s who Chase was hiring...a hacker. He swallowed thickly.
“He’s a doctor. His name is Henrik...he...oh, here–“
Chase dig into his pockets and pulled out a business card. Henrik’s card. The Eye took it from him and gave it a quick read.
“Interesting last name. German?”
“Heh...yeah, he is,” Chase chuckled softly. He glanced around again before getting into the meat of things. “Henrik went missing a few months ago. He was operating on our friend Jack - who’s totally fine, miraculously - when something went wrong. All they got off the security feed was a corrupted video, but it looked like someone...or something....attacked him.” Chase took a breath. “We...uh...we sorta know who did it, but Anti is impossible to track.”
“Antisepticeye. He’s like, this weird, corrupted, dark alter-ego of Jack’s. He’s a glitch.”
A soft, disbelieving chuckle came from across the table.
“Seriously?” he asked. “He’s a glitch? What, like, a glitch in the matrix? A robot?”
“We don’t know exactly,” Chase huffed. He gritted his teeth, annoyed. “I’m not joking about this! I’m serious! And I’m willing to pay anything to find Henrik again, no matter the cost.”
“Anything? That’s a big promise. But I’ve heard it before. What’s your limit, for real?”
“Anything.” The repeated word came out more firmly, Chase’s eyes set and determined beneath the brim of his hat. “I’ve lost everything else....my wife, my children....and Henrik? He’s the closest thing to family I have left.” He didn’t bother bringing up Cliff. “So I’ll give anything, anything at all, to bring him back.”
The Eye bowed his head slightly. He was silent for a long moment, then...
“Understood.” He pocketed the business card. “Then I suppose the real question here...is who are you really hiring me to find?”
“...sorry?” Chase blinked.
The Eye leaned forward across the table, the light reflecting off his glasses a little. He folded his hands on the tabletop.
“Who am I really searching for? The doctor...or the glitch?”
