Guide Dog Training: Week One . . . Week one of Guide Dog Trainer and is almost at an end. As some of you might know if you’ve watched my Instagram stories. I’ve been staying in a hotel in King’s Cross for the first week of training with Rosie along with some other guide dog owners who are also in class with their new dogs. I go home for the weekend and return next week for the last week of residential training before returning home for the final three weeks of training with Rosie. It’s been a really interesting experience and I’ve really enjoyed meeting the other owners on the class. I also find it very helpful when your first training with a guide dog because you’re around all of the trainers and there is a constant flow of support if and when you need it. We have currently been working on Short-handle walks and getting Rosie used to me as her new handler. This involves lots of positive reinforcement and getting her used to me putting on her harness, her gentle leader and walking with her on a loose lead. Rosie is doing so well and she’s really responding to me and everyone is very pleased with her progress so far. She is such a lovely little soul and I’ve pretty much fall in love with her already. Today is #InternationalGuideDogDay . . . (Photo taken before lockdown). I will be honest, I entirely forgot today was International Guide Dog Day! I know thats absolutely terrible! But I wasn’t feeling very well for the first half of the day and a mist clouded my brain. But I simply couldn’t let today pass without acknowledging my sensational guide dog Unity. @guidedogsuk as a charity have blessed my life beyond measure. Before Unity I didn’t honestly know what it meant to be independent. Not in the physical sense anyway. But when she trotted into my life, I had a new sense of purpose and freedom. . . . I know things are very tough for all of us guide dog owners at the moment who cannot work our dogs as much because of lockdown. But things will return to normal some point in the hopefully not too distant future and we can all go on our adventures once more. Until that time Unity is enjoying having more free runs than she could have imagined and spending her days playing in the garden. . . . So I say in this video that we won’t show it to @guidedogsuk but my mum who is Vivvy’s owner said it’s ok. As a family we were visiting Wookie Hole I got disorientated (I’m #Blind too) and accidentally instructed mum to walk Vivvy into the mirror maze. As you can tell from the full body wiggle Vivvy loved it she was convinced she was surrounded by happy black Labradors who wanted to say hello.
