During the Salvadoran Civil War, both the army and the guerrillas used child soldiers. It is estimated that the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) used around 2,000 child soldiers. The Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) forcibly recruited children as young as 12, a practice that violated several international conventions on war. Mentally immature and incapable of decision-making, children were especially traumatized as perpetrators and witnesses to the wartime violence. The consequences of the psychological injuries on these children are still apparent today. As an example, journalistic works indicates that some of the first Salvadoran gang members to form in the United States were children who fought in the war.
