It took Vivi way too long to find a hospital in her opinion, but she managed to find one and pull up into the emergency room parking area with a screech of tires. She ran through the door. Â âMy friends are hurt!â
To the credit of the staff, they took one look at her bloody clothes and ran towards the door. Vivi was right behind them (She briefly noted that some police had shown up at some point.) and opened the van door. Mystery quickly jumped out while a couple of nurses climbed in to examine Sydney and Arthur. Â Sydney was quickly helped out (That was a good sign, right?) while the nurses shouted that they needed a gurney for Arthur.
Vivi didnât even get to go into the back with them because the police intercepted her and demanded to know what had happened. Â Vivi understood in the back of her mind that it looked like someone or something had attacked them, and they needed to be sure it wasnât Vivi or that there was some sort of psycho running around.
The only problem was that she had no idea what happened.  Theyâd been on a road trip, on their way toâŠshe couldnât remember where. Some place rumored to be haunted of course.  Anyway, theyâd been on their way to the location and then sheâd been driving the van and Arthur and Sydney had been injured in the back and she had no idea what had happened between the two.
Vivi tried to figure out what had happened.  SomethingâŠThey must have been attacked or something, and Arthur and Sydney had jumped forward to defend her and Mystery like they tended to do, but that didnât make sense because Arthur tended to hang back when the threat was ephemeral, and Sydney was a long-range attacker.
Okay, maybe it was a physical attacker. Â Arthur at the front, Sydney supporting from the back. Â And they managed to get past Arthurâs defense and remove his arm, hard as that was to believe, and then ripped out Sydneyâs eye.
Wait. Â No. Â The threat would have done more damage to Sydney if that was the case, and Vivi wouldâve gotten hurt too because no way was she going to let anything hurt her two BFFs.
Different direction. It looked like Sydneyâs eye had been ripped out of its socket. Â So something got up close to her. Â Still probably a physical threat because Vivi didnât see how a metaphysical threat could get close enough to Sydney to do that. Â Maybe it caught them by surprise and went for Sydney first, maybe considering her the biggest threat because of her powers. Â Then Arthur tried to defend them and got hurt. Â And Vivi did nothing? Â That didnât make any sense. Â Thereâs no way Vivi would just sit back and let them do all the work!
Maybe sheâd just somehow gotten really lucky? Â Mystery seemed uninjured too though, and wouldnât it make more sense for three of them to be injured if it was just luck? Â Maybe they managed to get to the safe zone they set up, but how would Vivi drag both of them to the safe zone?
None of this made any sense!
Vivi took several deep breaths, relieved that the police were leaving her alone. Â Letâs try this one more time. Â Arthur missing an arm. Â Sydney missing an eye. Â No other injuries? Â Hard to say. Theyâd both been covered in so much blood it would hide any other injuries. Â Vivi and Mystery are both okay, if shaken and missing memories. Were Sydney and Arthur missing memories? Â Sydney had certainly been confused so it seemed likely. Â Maybe she could ask Sydney if she was still awake.
Except she couldnât find Sydney anywhere.
Oh God. Â Had Sydney had another serious injury Vivi had missed? Â Vivi waved down a passing nurse. Â âExcuse me, my friends, they were hurt really bad, and I canât find Sydney. Â She was-was missing her-â Â She couldnât finish.
The nurse seemed to catch on. Â âSheâs in the operating room.â
And Vivi slapped herself upside the head. Â Of course she needed surgery! Â Parts of her skull and optic nerve had been visible. Â âAre Arthur and Sydney going to be all right?â Â Vivi didnât think sheâd survive if they didnât make it.
âSydney should be fine.  Losing her eye is going to affect her for the rest of her life, but her life isnât in any danger.  Arthur, the young manâŠ?â  Vivi nodded. âHe lost a lot of blood.  The doctors stabilized him, but it did a lot of damage.  Weâll just have to hope that heâs strong enough to pull through at this point.â
Vivi swallowed. âIâŠI see.  Thank you.  I-I need to call their families.  Excuse me.â
It had only just occurred to Vivi that she needed to call Lance and Sydney Senior. Â She wasnât looking forward to it.
Vivi took a few moments to pet Mystery and calm down and gather strength. Â Then she dialed Sydney Seniorâs number. Â She kind of wanted to put off talking to Lance a bit more.
âHello, Sydney Scoville Sr. Â How can I be helping you?â asked Sydney Senior in a fake accent.
Vivi sobbed. âMr. ScovilleâŠâ
âVivi?â Â All joviality disappeared from Sydney Seniorâs voice. Â âIs everything okay?â
Vivi shook her head. âNo, no, there was some sort ofâŠsome sort of accident.  Arthur and Sydney were hurt really badly and I need you and Lance here.â
âOkay, okay, how bad is it?â
âSydneyâs eye is gone.â
âHer eye is gone?!â
âAnd Arthurâs arm is gone.â
âBloody Hell, what the %@^%*&^ ^$**% happened?!â
âI-I donât know.â
âHow the (*)(&( do you not know how your friends lost their body parts?!â
Vivi sobbed. Â âI donât know. Â I just remember being in the van, and then I was suddenly driving, and there was blood everywhere, and I found Arthur and Sydney and Mystery in the back, and I drove to the hospital.â
âOkay, okay, just tell me where you are, and Iâll get there as quickly as I can,â said Sydney Senior.
It took Vivi a moment to track down someone who could tell her the address. Â As soon as she rattled it off, Sydney Sr hung up. Â Vivi sniffled. Â That had been bad. Â Lance was probably going to be worse. Â She needed a moment before dialing his number.
Lance took a few moments to answer. Â âKingsman Mechanics.â
âLance, itâs Vivi.â
Lance was silent. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. I woke up in the van, and Arthur and Sydney were hurt, but I canât remember how they got hurt or what happened at all, which doesnât make any sense-â
âHow bad is it?â interrupted Lance.
âSydney lost an eye. Arthur lost an arm. Â Theyâre in surgery.â Â Vivi let out a wail. Â âThey donât know if Arthurâs going to wake up!â
âThat bad then. What about you and Lewis?â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat.  âIâm okay.  Iâm okayâŠâ
âGood. Â And Lewis?â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âWhat?â
âIs Lewis okay?â Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. âYou didnât mention him.â
âDidnât mentionâŠAre you talking about Mystery?â
âHow did you get-Iâm talking about Lewis!â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âTalking about who?â
âLewis.â Â Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âYour boyfriend.â
Vivi blinked. âI donât have a boyfriend,â she said mechanically.
It took several moments for Lance to respond. Â âHow many people are in your ghost hunting club?â
âThree plus Mystery.â
Lance let out what Vivi suspected was a Gaelic curse. Â âVivi, you need to call your parents. Â Iâm going to call the Peppers.â
Viviâs brain skipped a painful beat. Â âI already called Sydneyâs dad.â
âGood, now give me the address of the hospital slowly so I can write it down.â Â Vivi had to say it a few times because she wanted to rattle it off too quickly for Lance to write it down. Â âGot it. Â Iâll close up the shop and drive down.â
âGreat.â
âAnd we are going to have a very long talk once I get there,â said Lance, the threat of a promise in his voice.
Vivi swallowed. âYes sir.â Â This was going to end badly.
Now it was time for her parents. Â She stared at it for a moment. Â Theyâd warned her. Â She hadnât listened. Â Why hadnât she listened? Â Theyâd known what they were talking about. Â She knew they knew what they were talking about. Â She still had chosen to ignore their lessons.
It took Mystery whining and pawing at her arm to get her to finish dialing the number.
âHello, this is the Yukino residence,â greeted Serena.
Vivi let out a sob. âMom.â
âVivi? Â Honey, whatâs wrong?â
âI-I-â  Vivi took a shuddering breath.  âI think I got Arthur and Sydney hurt really badâŠâ
âDid you call their families?â asked Serena.
Vivi nodded before recalling that her mother couldnât see it. Â âYes. Â Theyâre not happy.â
âTheyâre just worried,â Serena reassured them. Â âNow, do you know where you are?â
Vivi nodded and rattled off the hospital address for the third time that night.
âOkay, your father and I will be there as soon as we can,â said Serena. Â âWeâll see if your grandmother can come as well.â
âOkayâŠâ
âUntil then, you kids take care of yourselves, and keep Mystery nearby at all times,â instructed Serena.
âYes maâam,â said Vivi.
âAnd remember, we love you.â
âI love you too,â Vivi replied automatically before ending the call.  She looked to Mystery, who whined and gave her face a lick. Vivi hiccupped and wrapped her arms around him.  âI messed upâŠâ
