Team Rocket never went back for the Growlithe James left at his parents, did they? That's a shame. I feel like they should've followed up on that. At least in the big finale of the anime where they were trying to wrap everything up. Because it's a pretty important thing, isn't it? That episode where we learn James's backstory might be one of the first super big episodes to focus on Team Rocket without them being the villians of the episode.
I like Growlithe as a pokemon regularly, actually. So I do kind of wish Team Rocket went back for Growlie. In the same way I wish Team Rocket (hell, even ash) could've had reunions with all the pokemon they released over the years. Arbok and Weezing, for example.

In the streamer au the TRio eventually realizes that if they keep stalking the Twerps they're going to be on camera a lot, so they've got to step up their game if they don't want to make Team Rocket look bad. And that's when James realizes he knows where they can get an Arcanine and a Carnivine fairly easily, kicking off an off-screen training arc I like to call the James Backstory Speedrun, where they get Growlie away from his crazy parents and evolve him, dig up Carnivine early, evolve Ekans and Koffing early, catch and train up some new Pokemon(some of which they got in Sinnoh while digging up Carnivine), figure out that Meowth can use TMs (don't know why they never tried that), and visit Nanny and Pop-pop who somehow manage to pull some strings and get Meowth registered as a Trainer.
It's predictably still not enough to steal Pikachu, but at least Giovanni won't see them as disappointments anymore!
