âMove over, I brought lunch. No, don't even argue, I know you forget to eat when you work on a paper.â
â⌠Thank you, love.â + Matt/Billy
Little Details
The middle of an expensive, upscale restaurant was not the best venue for the type of discussion that needed to take place. It wasnât just the exorbitant amount of pricey wine bottles brought to the table that caught the attention of their fellow patrons. Eugene noticed that those in their immediate vicinity had started to pick up on the sordid topics of conversation that went along with the unexpected reunionâŚsex, secrets, and scandal.
âWeâve hit the trifecta for good trashy daytime talk shows,â he quipped, voice lowering as he scanned the dimly lit dining room. âOr one of my maâs favorite soap operas.â
Billy dabbed his lips with a linen napkin, blue eyes staring pointedly at Tommy and Jason.
âWe arenât done here. Iâm sure you both understand that.â
It wasnât a question. Or up for debate.
So, while Drakkon settled the outrageous bill, including the trioâs without bothering to ask, and Tommy gathered their heavy coats from the attendant, they waited together in the grand foyer in awkward silence. Jason and Red sat side by side on one of the cushioned velvet benches and Matthew found himself still looking from one to the other like this was a parlor trick.
âSoâŚummmâŚwhat happens now?â he murmured to Billy and Eugene. âDo we dial Prometheaâs direct line and wait for the calvary? Or signal Zordon and the others?â
The idea of not ratting out the two supposedly former villains was one he was prepared to give voice to. After all, the Green Ranger had no personal history with Drakkon or Red. His partners, however, had an extensive and painful one.
Billy looked at Eugene, lips pursed in thought.
âYouâve been acquainted with them longer and more intimately than we have. Especially Red,â he murmured. âWeâve seen the masks before⌠Do you think thereâs an underlying plan? Are Tommy and Jason under a spell? Drakkon learned magic from Ritaâs booksâŚâ
Skull glanced over to where his âold palâ now perched with the younger version of the person he once was. It wasnât easy to look at him, sitting next to Jase and reminding the hardened former Sentry captain of the days before that looney fuckâs ascension, times spent bickering at the Youth Center or needling the teen in the school hallway.
He cleared his throat, swallowing back the acrid sting of tears.
âOlâ Fuck Face? I think pigs will fly before that hateful dick turns over a new leaf.â
His expression softened slightly when it came to the tyrantâs pet.
âRed could be manipulative when he wanted to be, even with âhis lordshipâ⌠But it wasnât necessarily malicious, especially when he was on his own. Drakkon brought out the demons in him, or whatever psychiatric rabies he infected him with.â
Matt nodded decisively, hands settling on his hips.
âAlright then. We need to talk to Red without Drakkonâs presence influencing him.â
Billy started to shake his head, remembering the last time heâd interacted with the fractured man.
âEugene and I interacted with him in the containment cage after he was incidentally captured. He cycled through several different characters and tactics to goad usâŚor inflict emotional distress. If Red had wanted help, all he had to do was askâŚâ
The Green Ranger interrupted, raising a finger.
âBut you heard him. He knows the truth now. You told me that he refused to even entertain the idea that he was anyone other than himself. Red thought YOU were trying to deceive HIM. Tonight, he said that he knew he was supposed to be Jason Scott.â
Skull pinched the bridge of his nose. It was true that heâd witnessed the petâs wildnessâŚand his wrath. The person sitting across from him at the table had admitted some hard truths. And in his heart, Eugene couldnât shake the idea heâd always held that beneath Redâs aggression was someone who didnât relish being mean but did what his master commandedâŚa gentle, intelligent man who really wanted to be free to paint and read and have a farm. A traumatized prisoner who had no choice but to play the game so he could survive.
âI think I have an idea,â Billy advised, cutting through Skullâs reverie. âAnd part of it will help me investigate them a little deeper. Iâm not making any promises however that we wonât notify the proper authorities.â
Jasonâs eyes widened and he looked over his shoulder to where Red still hunkered, fingers fidgeting with the zipper of his coat, then back to Billy.
âYou want to what?â
âI want to scan them,â the Blue Ranger repeated calmly. âI can procure the required equipment from Promethea and perform the assessment at our lodging. If what they are saying is accurate, then doing this for our peace of mind shouldnât be an issue, correct?â
The Omegaâs mouth opened and closed. He wasnât sure how the request was going to be received by Drakkon, who took offense at almost every damn thing on a good day. Red was mostly mute by now, likely overwhelmed with shame, embarrassment, and existential dread. Sudden movements were making him twitchy as if he were waiting for Grace Sterling to kick the door in with her calvary of Promethea lackies.
âGod, what if one of them flips shit and has an episode?â
This was the worst possible time for a mental health crisis. Red was most likely to unexpectedly explode. When he became triggered, he might become catatonicâŚuntil he wasnât. And that was when the party really started.
âWhat are you scanning for? Are you doing some super fine-tuned polygraph or something?â Tommy muttered, finally ceasing to gnaw fruitlessly at the lining of his cheek. âWhat do you think theyâre just waiting around to do after all this time here? Besides Drakkon drinking carbonated beverages, watching dumb scripted reality shows, and driving a stolen car without a license to plant cocaine on some asshole and to go get Redâs dick pierced?â
At this revelation, Matthew nearly choked on his own spit.
âWaitâŚwhat?â
Eugene rolled his eyes and huffed.
âThatâs not the most important thing right now, sweetieâŚâ
He wasnât at all shocked at the tyrantâs lack of respect for laws nor by Red getting genital jewelry. Skull was, however, surprised that the pet didnât have one way before nowâŚalong with several others and a few tattoo pieces. As for Matt, he was a sucker for he termed âbodyâ bling and, apparently, the Green Grid energy exacerbated oneâs sexual drive.
âMattâs going to be thinking about that all night now,â he sighed inwardly. There was no jealousy in the observation, just annoyance that it threatened to overshadow Dictator Dick wandering freely about the Prime Universe.
âSorryâŚjust didnât expect him to throw that out there,â the jock muttered sheepishly, averting his eyes from Jason to glance at Redâs groin for a half a second. He just couldnât help himself at times.
Billy loudly cleared his throat.
âI also have doubts regarding your judgement,â he continued, âas youâve hidden one of the most dangerous threats weâve ever faced from us. A Ranger that has killed thousands, warped reality, and shattered the Grid itself. Therefore, youâll also understand that we need assurance youâll comply with our request.â
Jasonâs expression tightened, a muscle in his cheek twitching. Nothing that Billy just said was wrong, but it still stung that his friend didnât trust them. Hiding Eugene was nowhere close to the same sin that he and Tommy had committed. It was apples and oranges.
âWhat kind of assurance?â
Matt hooked his thumb towards where Red waited on the bench, pale as a sheet.
Drakkon glowered at the trio from where he, Red, Jason, and Tommy conferred by the large glass door.
âTheyâre taking him hostage!â he hissed. âThatâs what this is! They know where you live! Itâs not like weâre difficult to track down. Especially with the blue oneâs brains. Heâd create a tracking method that didnât need my coinâs energy signature!â
Tommy roughly shoved his elbow against the asshole.
âZip it, dude! Theyâll hear you!â
âI donât give a FUCK!â the tyrant snapped, his voice rising on the vaunted expletive.
Several heads turned in their direction, and the White Ranger physically dragged his counterpart outside into the snow before Eugene became triggered and the whole thing went to hell. Jason rubbed at his face in frustration.
âI know they wonât hurt him⌠Itâs that Red is going to be spooked. I donât know how much he even remembers of his Matthew Cook. And he and Eugene were in a spat the last time they saw each otherâŚâ
This was a clusterfuck. And it was their wedding day. They were supposed to enjoy dinner at an exclusive restaurant, watch the New Yearâs ball drop, and fuck each stupid until the sun went down the next day. Clearly, that was not their destiny.
âHowâs your stomach?â he whispered gently near Redâs ear, hoping that his doppelganger would respond.
For a moment, there was no response. Then slowly, the former petâs hand moved, gesturing vaguely at his abdomen. Historically, he could no longer tolerate sweets and should have known better than to indulgeâŚeven if it was a special occasion.
âRollingâŚâ he stammered, brow furrowed as his mind struggled to pluck the correct words. But he was feeling too inebriated, too nauseated by the chocolate cake, too ashamed of hearing about his delusional and often crude behavior.
âCakeâŚâ Red croaked, pulling a face.
The Omega put an arm around him, rubbing his shoulder.
âItâs ok. Donât worry about finding the right word right now. I understand.â
He could see Drakkon and Tommy arguing on the opposite side of the door, their breaths clouding in front of their mouths. Jason wasnât an expert at lip reading but he could clearly make out the tyrantâs lips forming âboneheadâ, âlittle shitâ, âfuckâ, and a few other colorful idioms.
Jason rested his forehead against Redâs.
âIf he doesnât settle down, they wonât bother with scans. Theyâre already skittish.â
âYesâŚweâreâŚbadâŚguysâŚâ
Mattâs hand settled on Jasonâs back and made him jump, jostling Red so that he nearly toppled from the bench.
âSorry, sorry!â the Green Ranger soothed, recoiling. âLook, emotions are running high right now. But weâve known each other for a long time, Jase. You can see where weâre coming from, right? And you know heâll be safe and sound when you get there.â
He nodded toward the door.
âI think the sooner we get those two somewhere more private, the better. Before someone calls the cops for a disturbanceâŚat a minimum.â
The Omega looked at the Green Ranger, sadness in his eyes.
âI know you guys wouldnât do anything to hurt him. Itâs not thatâŚâ he admitted quietly. âHeâs anxious and heâd already thrown up before we ran into you guys.â
Matt smiled kindly.
âRedâs been through enough. I agreeâŚâ
âRedâs sitting right here,â the man in question muttered irritably. âI still talk.â
Jason sucked in a breath, immediately contrite.
âShit⌠We shouldnât haveâŚâ
The former pet waved his hand, sweat shining at his temples, and looked around the foyer that had seemed to shrink in size. Drakkon and Tommy were still popping off in the snow a few steps from the entrance, Eugene was staring owlishly at the tyrant through the glass, getting more agitated by Drakkonâs face contorted in anger, and Billy waited with hands in his pockets and a much put upon look on his countenance. Jason and Matthew were entirely too close and looking at him like he was some exotic zoo animal.
Red couldnât stand the overstimulation for another minute.
âIâll go withâŚthem. It canât be anyâŚworse thanâŚhereâŚâ
Drakkon had a reputation for being an underhanded, scheming asshole with delusions of grandeur, however, despite his distorted self-perception, he was not stupid. Given the totality of everything heâd done, the tyrant understood that his word was as good as dog shit when it came to convincing Billy, Matthew, and Skull that he was a changed man and not pulling some long con. Recognizing this fact did not mean that the former dictator didnât bitch and moan the entire ride to the trioâs hotel room.
âThis is insulting,â Drakkon muttered for something like the hundredth time, scowling petulantly as he dropped into one the kitchen chairs so heavily that the frame made a crack of warning. âAll of you know damn good and well that I could have easily killed everyone at that table on sight! And this is what I get for not doing so!â
He eyed Billy warily as the Blue Ranger approached him, blinking device in hand.
âThe âold meâ would not have bothered with conversation. Red and Eugene will agree with that!â
Jason tried to pacify the indignant man, leaning down to whisper reassurances in his ear and earning expressions of horror and confusion from their hosts.
âGoddammit, I donât even have my coin anymore!â Drakkon snapped, interrupting whatever the Omega had been saying. âI mean I could just manually snap a few necks like I used to, but thatâs a lot of work on my wedding night!â
âNowâs not the time to be a smart ass,â Tommy hissed, smacking his doppelganger up the back of his head and garnering more stunned looks from the trio. âNowâs not the time to fuck around with the past. Theyâre jumpy enough without you flipping shit over nothing!â
âIâm just saying that I figured if I disposed of these inconvenient witnesses, youâd get all pissy and hit me, White Ranger. But you still got handsy! Arenât you supposed to be the non-violent one?â
Red was silent, his eyes darting about the room as he listened to his partners bickering amongst themselves. He wasnât worried that Drakkon might go homicidal and paint the room with his victimsâ blood. With four active Rangers surrounding him and Skull out for vengeance, the tyrant would get his ass handed to himâŚ. eventually. It was the fear of the unknown, the wine flooding his system, and his stomach threatening further rebellion.
Drakkon raised a brow when Billy lifted the scanner and approached, Eugene hovering close behind him.Â
âSo, what are you looking for, Blue Boy? Whatâs that gizmo going to tell you?â
The blonde adjusted his glasses, a nervous habit he was trying to break.
âIâm going to perform a neuro dimensional scan. It will document any structural changes to your brain, residual or current Grid energy, and other abnormalities from the imaging Grace recorded during yourâŚuhâŚprevious apprehension.â
Rolling his eyes, the older man huffed.
âOf course, youâd bring that shit upâŚâ
Resolutely, the Blue Ranger lifted the device and held it near Drakkonâs temple.
âTo be clear, it's difficult to believe that you altered your worldview and core personality merely by crossing dimensional lines. Youâd done so several times before without any noticeable changes to your disposition or temperament.â
The tyrant glared, eyes locked on the gadget with its blinking lights as Billy began to sweep it along his profile.
âLike I told those two boneheads, it had to be something with the pulses from the unstable arch. Or maybe it was a combination of that with my magic and the Black Dragon coin that I used to teleport us⌠Thatâs the best I can figure!â
Eugene loomed closer, his posture tense like he was waiting for Drakkon to bite. He was not a fan of his love being so close to this monster. If it came to it, heâd tackle the fucker himself, power coin or no power coin.
âWhatever happened, it was powerful enough for you to do a 180?â he argued, pointing an accusing finger. âYou were so set in your ways, confident that you knew betterâŚYou killed people, tortured themâŚâ
He jutted his chin over to where Red had finally hunkered down on a corner of the couch, watching solemnly as everything unfolded, fingers twisted the hem of his dress shirt. The wedding band glittering on his left hand only further incensed Eugene, an exchange of one collar for another.
âYou destroyed their identities, their mindsâŚCoerced them to do unspeakable, vile actsâŚMade them feel like they were going mad!â
The tyrantâs face was stoney when the lambasting started, however, by the time it was finished, he had more emotion (other than pure fury) than Skull had ever seen on his face, even when he was still gangly, dick-ish Tommy Oliver.
âI canât undo whatâs been done,â Drakkon muttered, averting his eyes from Eugeneâs. âYes, there was a time I was powerful enough to overwrite reality and I DIDâŚbut if I could do so again, I canât say that I wouldâŚâ
Mattâs eyes widened and even Billy looked taken aback, scanner near the older manâs crown. Skull wasnât shocked at all. He chuckled derisively.
âBecause of him,â he clarified, gesturing at Red. âHe wouldnât exist if you hadnât gone all homicidal.â
Drakkon said nothing; the scanner continued to beep obnoxiously in the tense silence.
âWhat a fucking cache-22âŚâ Eugene sighed.
Billy clicked the device, finalizing the image collection.
The Blue Ranger spent the next morning studying side by side comparisons of the data sets obtained by Promethea, the ones of Red in the containment cage, and the most recent images heâd taken the night before. His brow scrunched in confusion, and he idly tapped a finger on the tabletop. When Matt settled a bowl of soup and a sleeve of crackers near his elbow, Billy seemed to come out of a trance.
âHuh?â
âMove over, I brought lunch. No, don't even argue, I know you forget to eat when you work on a paper.â
The Green Ranger pulled a chair out and settled beside his lover.
âAnd this is considerably more complicatedâŚâ
âAffirmative.â Billy smiled, nodding at the soup. âThank you, love.â
Matt peered at the technical printouts, brain images, and graphs with various colors and configurations.
âYou finally got results?â
Billy sighed, shaking his head. He pulled the soup closer before laying out a series of papers.
âI had results last night. Itâs what they mean that is currently unclear.â
He scooped a spoonful into his mouth, his stomach rumbling at the delicious aroma. Matt was no scholar and utterly unfamiliar with the intricacies of the Grid but perhaps thinking out loud would be beneficial.
âThis set is Drakkonâs readings. Iâve added a copy of our Green Ranger Tommy Oliverâs, however, as a baseline, itâs not going to be a reliable starting point. Something led to the marked difference in decision that caused our timelines to diverge. But there are some interesting findings.â
The Green Ranger raised a brow.
âLike?â
âI expected there to be some obvious discrepancies, of course. Yet they are more alike than Iâd anticipated. ItsâŚunsettling.â
He placed Tommyâs data sets alongside the ones Grace collected while Lord Drakkon graced her holding cell. There was a wealth of similarities.
âSo, the line between Oliver and his darker self is thinner than we realized,â Matt muttered. âWhat about Tommy now? Being the White Ranger and all?â
Billy shook his head.
âThatâs a whole problem for a different time. What I can say for certain now is that there are structural and biochemical changes from Drakkonâs first assessment and the one I did last night. The areas of the brain responsible for emotional regulation, for example, have been altered.â
Matt had no understanding of neurobiology or anything close to it but the areas his partner pointed to were different from one image to the next.
âI found the residual Grid energy as expectedâŚGreen Dragon and the White Tiger...Black Dragon. None are fresh and there is no current connection between Drakkon and the Grid,â Billy continued.
That was a relief. The asshole been telling the truth when he claimed he had no power coin. And considering how obsessed with it the tyrant was, it must have been destroyed for him to be without it.
âOk so the mighty morphin Thanos is now a mortal manâŚGreat. What about Red?â
Billyâs expression shifted to one of confusion as he replaced the assorted scans of Drakkonâs readings with those of Prime Jason and Red.
âThis is where the data getsâŚinteresting.â
He moved the Omegaâs data next to the one heâd taken of the pet when heâd been held in the Coinless containment cage. Even someone as medically illiterate as Matthew could see that the two were nothing alike.
âWhoa⌠those look like two different peopleâŚI meanâŚpeople who arenât the same across dimensions,â the Green Ranger tried to explain. âIf Drakkon and Tommy were similar despite the obvious derailing, shouldnât Jase and Redâs be closer?â
The blonde genius shook his head.
âAccording to several studies, brain imaging of those with DIDâŚdissociate identity disorder...differ depending on the alter who is âfrontingâ. So, in a manner of speaking, these are two different individuals.â
Using one finger, Billy slid Redâs reading from the previous night over to the lineup. Just as Drakkonâs had differed from Coinless world to Prime, so did Redâs. Something HAD altered the two deadly predators. But did these findings correlate with changed behavior?
âWellâŚDrakkon supposedly hasnât killed anyone since he got here. Would he have had that much self-restraint before?â Matt queried.
âMost definitely not.â
He pulled out the Grid readings next.
âI think most of Redâs changes are in some ways due to being an alternate personality, however, these energy signatures add more odd detail than they explain. Here are the Red Tyranno and White Tiger as weâd expectâŚCoinless Jasonâs original coin and when he tried to take on the White Light but was interrupted by Drakkon.â
His brow creased.
âWhat I canât account for are these,â the Blue Ranger muttered, pointing at the colors on the frequency and saturation graph. âThereâs a diluted Black Mastodon here and there's Omega Fire, which shouldnât be possible because he never progressed far enough to have those powers in his timeline. And this one is a faint reading of Drakkonâs Black DragonâŚâ
There was no way that the former dictator allowed his pet to wield his power. So how was the residual showing up on Redâs Grid readings?
âWhat are those?â Matt asked, pointing to two hues that were marked at a higher vibration and saturation than the others. âThey donât look any Ranger colors Iâve ever seen. And they have a different shape, like stars or something.â
The known colors had only two spires stretching to the top and bottom of the graph. Not so for these mysterious ones, which were a deep almost maroon and the warm yellow of honeycomb. Their projections were varied and extended out around the edges, just like starlight as Matthew had said.
Billy traced the lines projecting from the Red Tyranno.
âThese indicate a connection with the Grid up here and a morpher down here. My hypothesis for the difference is that these two are no longer associated with the Grid and have no tether to a morpher. Essentially, pure Grid energyâŚaberrations. Theyâre also more saturated because they are current, not residuals.â
âDo you think theyâre hiding something else? Something to do with these? Like Ranger powers?â
Billy shrugged. He didnât even know what the two individual colors meant when in this odd configuration. Drakkon claimed to know a great deal about the Grid. He might recognize what these colors represented; it was whether or not the tyrant would try to bullshit them that was the problem.
âWell,â Matt offered, his tone practical, âwe could just ask them. I meanâŚif these donât have any morpher or coin or whatever, then Red came into contact with them somehow.â
When the trio arrived at the quadâs hotel room sans announcement, it was obvious that theyâd been expecting Promethea or the other Ranger teams. Drakkon was on his knees, hands behind his headâŚoffering a non-threatening appearance to avoid painful or lethal repercussions. Jason and Tommy stood between him and the door, already sputtering assurances of âchangeâ and ânot dangerous.â
Red was nowhere in sightâŚwhich could be either a good thing or a bad thing.
Eugene snapped his gum merrily, feeling much better that olâ Fuck Face had no more power than he did.
ââSup, motherfucker!â he sang jubilantly as they made their way through the door.
The White Ranger and the Omegaâs postures visibly relaxed while Drakkon muttered curses under his breath and hefted himself from the garish carpet.
Rather than wait for Billy to layout his presentation as heâd done for Matthew, and later for Eugene, Skull got right to the point. He wasnât about to give them an inch.
Plucking Redâs packet from the Blue Ranger, the former Sentry captain hummed softly, smacking the sheaf of paper down on the coffee table.
âSo, fellas, I explained the Black Mastodon blip, but weâre going to need you to tell us what the hell these areâŚâ
He tapped the maroon and golden spirals.
âAnd how Red managed to pop positive for Omega FireâŚand Black Dragon.â
"I see; so youâre nothing more than a name.â + Canis, Oryctolagus, & maaaaaaybe Drakkon (because how fun is a covert insult)
@augment-techs holy shit. I meant this to be a gift/companion piece that your story inspired... and it grew like one of Zedd's monsters!
Dismantling a God
Red already felt the prickles of growing agitation even before Drakkon unleashed a torrent of unrepentant curses. It wasnât his partnerâs ire that elicited the dread coiling in his chest, but the unexpected upheaval that loomed on the horizon.
âWhoâs bright idea was this dumb shit, anyways?â the tyrant snarled hotly, looking from one bonehead to the other. âHavenât we already done this song and dance once before? Have we learned nothing?â
He waited for a response, but none was forthcoming. Jason genuinely couldnât say for sure how the plan for Halloween came about, only that the fucking thing had grown to epic proportions before he could put a stop to it.
Tommy huffed and rolled his eyes.
âWe got put between a rock and a hard place, asshole! Do you know how many excuses weâve given to keep the others away?â he retorted. âWeâve run out of reasons that donât sound suspicious or illegal!â
Red perched on the back of the couch, fingers plucking the threads lining the hem of his t-shirt. Feeling like he just might flip out, vomit, or a combination of the two, the former pet opted to keep his mouth shut and let the other three hash it out.
âJust like I said before! Itâs a bullshit holiday! Whatâs the point in dressing up and decorating in blood and gore, if its all fucking fake?â
Back in the palace, dressing up in elaborate costumes, engaging in twisted and often fatal endeavors, and laughing in merriment while doing so was just any other day of the week ending in a âyâ.Â
âAt least we had good wine to go along with the festivities, not a bunch of booger-pickers running about, screaming their heads off, and puking from too many sweets!â Drakkon continued to argue. âNow youâre going to sit there and decree that we canât be in the sanctity of our home so you can throw your little soiree!â
âItâs not like thatâŚâ Jason tried to interrupt but the older man wasnât having any of his shit.Â
He waved his hand dismissively.
âYou realize that we have to pack up and hide all our belongings unless you want people to gossip about Uncle David and his boyfriend Jamie having a sex swing and other BDSM related paraphernalia in their bedroom? Because you know some motherfucker or other will go snooping about!â
Tommyâs brow furrowed and he glanced at the Omega, who had no answer that would smooth ruffled feathers.
âIâm sorry, guysâŚâ was the best he could manage.
âYour ASS is going to be sorry!â
Red couldnât take all the anxious energy humming along the nerves of his muscles. This Halloween get-together had shifted from just being the White Ranger and his team and the Omegas to now including not only Mr. and Mrs. Scott, but the parents of the other Rangers as well. The two Coinless orphans got lucky before and managed to get by with the skin of their teeth the last time theyâd had an unfortunate collision with the very people they had to hide from.
And the grey-haired man harbored a lot of mixed feelings about being in proximity to Jasonâs mother after the near miss when the Omega had been ill.Â
Red forced himself to take a few deep, steadying breaths as he tried to ground himself using the techniques that had come up in conversation with Jane, their neighbor down the way whoâd once operated the general store in the campground and had been kind to him. The plump, matronly woman was warm and thoughtful and a really good listener. Truthfully, heâd had to catch himself more than once almost saying the very things he shouldnât as they sat on Janeâs front porch painting and conversing.
âPeople go through bad things sometimes,â she said, adding a thin line to highlight the wing of a cardinal in flight. âAnd it can change you, sonnyâŚfor better and for poorer. But you have to survive whatever fallout comes your way, have to remind yourself that youâre safe.â
Red couldnât remember how theyâd gotten on the subject of trauma and its far reaching tendrils. Perhaps a book theyâd both read at the same time?Â
âIâve heard of a few ways that can help when your nervous system takes a hit.â
5-4-3-2-1 methodâŚ
Deep breathingâŚ
Temperature shockâŚ
Sensory groundingâŚ
He was in the middle of breath-work when Drakkon started screeching yet again in his outrage.Â
âAnd where the fuck are my darling and I supposed to secret ourselves while you all get shit-faced and frolic in merriment? Out in the lake like mermaids? In the garden shed like a couple of perverted voyeurs?â
Tommy smacked a hand on the coffee table.
âJesus Christ, dude! Do you really think weâd make Red stay outside all night in the woods?â
He had that argumentative look on his freckled face again, the one he got when he decided he wanted to drag Drakkonâs ass to hell and back.
âOh, fuck you, Thomas! You know what, you little shit? You can take that shiny White Light of yours and shove it upâŚâ
Thatâs when Jasonâs cell phone started to ring and a solution to their problem was formulated.
It was Eugeneâs idea. Maybe not the part that included inviting Drakkon. As far as the homicidal tyrant was concerned, he could go fuck himself with a rusty fish hook for all the former Sentry captain cared. Right in front of Zordon and Grace Sterling too.
âAre you sure about this, love?â Matt queried before calling the quad. âYou werenât too keen on him coming over before.â
Skull was seated at his beloved piano, gently wiping the glossy surfaces with a soft cloth as he hummed under his breath.
âIf olâ Fuck Face canât come, then Red wonât. And I might have my own reasons for wanting them both here,â he answered as casually as if discussing what to make for dinner. âNothing lethal, mind you⌠I did learn a very valuable lesson under my former employer. Sometimes granting a reprieve isnât always a kindness."
Billy and Matt exchanged a concerned look. It creeped them out when Skull started talking like that, a sort of tone of voice and posture and perspective that wasnât quite âhimâ. They were from something that was cold and archaicâŚpossibly not of this plane of existence. But it was nothing they could say for certain as both were too uncomfortable to ask Eugene about those âsituationsâ in any great detail.
Not the deceased animals, the wail, the dissociation, the complex underground system with its treasures that Skull carefully curatedâŚ
Because they didnât know exactly WHO might answer. Not any entity that the Blue Ranger could pinpoint with any of his scanners. It was like trying to nail water to the wall.
âIf youâre certain, Eugene,â Billy murmured, âIâll give Jason a call right now and get everything set up.â
Skull didnât acknowledge the words as he continued scrutinizing the delicate instrument for motes of dust.
When Drakkon finally processed the offer, he almost decided that roughing it out in nature was the better situation. There was a lot of bad blood between himself and his one time Red Sentry captain, Eugene Skullovitch. Hell, it actually went back much further to the days when he was still Tommy Oliver, a surly, freckled face psychopath.Â
And shit had only rolled downhill sinceâŚ
âHeâs going to slit my throat or something,â Drakkon whispered in Tommyâs ear as Jason and Red peered into the video screen. âFive bucks heâs recreating some serial killer slasher to go along with this Halloween themeâŚâ
The White Ranger looked at him incredulously.
âMotherfuckerâŚthe only one here that did that heinous shit was YOU. YOU plotted the most fucked up shit, splurged on it like a royal wedding, and made a public spectacle of the whole thing! Even for the dumbest offense. So donât act all high and mighty!â
He stopped gearing up for a throw down when Red eagerly answered âYes, please,â to the trip to the trioâs home. His face was pallid and heâd started doing the ominous pulling of his hair that usually heralded an ass cheek full of sedative after an episode of biting (either at Drakkon or sometimes self-directed during the bad slips), throwing punches, breaking furniture, screaming obscenities, and other acts of physical aggression.
The last time Red had REALLY flipped shit was when the red velvet box in the trophy room was brought up. Exactly how that had become a topic of conversation, they couldnât remember. But sure as shit, they would NEVER open that can of worms again in the foreseeable future.
And definitely not while drinkingâŚ
Following his subsequent recovery from the combined alcohol and sedation hangover (not an ideal combination but Red was completely unmanageable even with Drakkonâs strategies), the embarrassed and ashamed pet sketched a âself-portraitâ of sorts: a large canine with a thick leather collar. The tagâs inscription, rendered in shaky block letters, was painful to read but served as a reminder.
âRed (Good). No Biting.â
This sad memento was actually the first thing to be packed away, nestled in a box with his other journals and artwork that wasnât meant to be beautiful, before the quad set to work dismantling the sex swing, the pole, and the various restraint ties tucked into every room. A shit ton of alcohol, mostly expensive wines that Tommy and Jason would never be able to afford in their wildest dreams, was next. Drakkonâs collection of serial killer memorabilia was stashed in another container along with a few collectable action figures of his favorite television series and some really weird memento mori heâd unexpectedly found during a forced excursion to a vintage thrift store.Â
The artistic renderings of the nude male form was similarly taken down in Drakkon and Redâs room. Fetish magazines and sex toys followed.
For his part, Red didnât really have much in the way of socially inappropriate property beyond some risque attire and sketches. Heâd been used to his âmasterâ selecting what would be used during their play. All the photographs heâd taken of Drakkon were hidden as well as any that the others happened to have of the pet. Most of what he hated to see âleavingâ were his favorite vintage finds, items that Drakkon pointed out were bound to be accidentally broken or manhandled too roughly.
Jason had repaired the holes in the walls and the bathroom door that Red had made âthat one timeâ when heâd tried to come through after them, and the places were repainted and decorated as if nothing bad had transpired.Â
Seeing the cabin stripped bare of any sign of him living there was very unnerving for Red, still feeling raw and unmoored after the âthing with the haunted boxâ, though that incident had been months ago.Â
âDarling, I promise you that youâll have them back promptly by tomorrow afternoon. I donât care what it costs me,â Drakkon soothed, slipping an arm around Redâs shaking shoulders and guiding him to Tommyâs waiting vehicle.Â
The entire trip to the trioâs home, Red had been mute, almost catatonic really. Tommy frequently patted the syringe heâd pulled from the âBullshit Boxâ prior to locking the front door. There was a strong enough dose to put Red on his ass from now until until a full 24 hours later.
âI really donât want to do that to him, but goddamn is he vicious as fuck when he has an episode.â
Red could be as terrifying as Drakkon when he got on a good tear. It was hard to imagine him prancing about the palace in such an unbalanced and temperamental mindset. The containment cage had been a measured dose of what he was truly capable of and, while unable to physically assault anyone, the petâs mouth had been brutal.
That wild, spiteful demon was NOT the man Red was here in the Prime Universe, not at his core. It was justâŚsometimes his mind got⌠confused.
The tyrant rode the whole way in the backseat with his darling situated between himself and Jason.Â
Just in case.
It was when Red laid eyes on Eugene again that he broke from his muddied thoughts. He actually smiled when he saw his old friend nonchalantly lounging in the doorway to the music room. Giddy as a toddler, his eyes sparkled with excitement.
âWill you show me your warren, little rabbit? I canât wait to see what youâve created down there in the darkâŚâ
Tommy, Jason, and Drakkon lifted their brows simultaneously in surprise at Redâs odd words. Eugeneâs nickname during their stint in hell hadnât been something heâd ever shared. Hearing about the pairâs kooky friendship in the palace was one thing; seeing it play out was another. Even the former dictator hadnât been privy to much of what transpired between Red and Eugene while he was away as the servants were loath to initiate conversation with their unhinged lordship and the pet hadnât deemed it worthy of his masterâs attention.Â
Like almost everything else as heâd come to learn following the embarrassing McDonaldâs brawl.Â
âDonât look at me like I have a clue,â he muttered to the White Ranger and the little duckling. âApparently no one thought it necessary to tell me shit about what went on in my own kingdom while I was out busting my ass to squash resistance.â
Billy glared, Matt stared owlishly, Jason shook his head, Tommy sucked in a breath between his teeth and lifted his middle finger, and Eugene favored Drakkon with a bizarre sort of grin, sort of like the cat that caught the canaryâŚwhich had always been his own signature expression, dammit!
Red was too swept up in the intrigue to pay them any mind. He did note the tight lines about Skullâs eyes and tilted his head like a canine would when encountering something of interest.
âYou appear worn ragged, Sentry⌠Burning the midnight oil?â
The other Coinless orphan shrugged, his eyes not leaving Drakkonâs face.
âDays with ghoulies and ghosties up and about this time of year kick up my own bullshitâŚâ
Red gave a knowing nod, following Eugene toward an uninteresting door in the music room.
âHmmmâŚ. Have you considered seasonal depression? I have a lovely friend who knows a lot about the brain. She says it's a hobbyâŚâ
Drakkon gave a withering look of resignation before he too strode across the room to where Eugene and Red had gone.
âYou donât think thereâs going to be a blood bath, do you?â Jason muttered, only half-joking. âThat seemed a little tenseâŚâ
Matt shrugged.
âHard to say. Those three donât act like other people Iâve ever met. Eugene said killing Drakkon would actually be disappointing and detrimental to his enjoymentâŚso thereâs thatâŚâ
Jason ran a hand over his face.
âThis is going to be the longest night of my lifeâŚand I thought the Fourth of July was badâŚâ
The complex tunnel system really was like a rabbitâs warren. Drakkon followed a few steps behind Red and Eugene who strolled merrily along the dirt path, pausing to admire various features or structures as they made their way to who the fuck knew where. They were clearly lost in their own conversation as if he werenât trailing after them like a defunct Grim Reaper.Â
And considering the implications of being alone down under the earth with one person who would happily wear his guts for garters and the other who, given the right triggers, would tear his throat out and regret it later, being forgotten was the better outcome. With his enhanced hearing, Drakkon was able to listen to the conversation unfolding as it segued into reminiscing of the good olâ past.
âFuckâŚâ
Eugene continued with the grand tour, showing off caches of food and other collected odds and ends that the tyrant couldnât make sense of. Red nodded as if it were all perfectly rational. At one point, Drakkon almost pulled his partnerâs arm, tugging him back a step or two to whisper in his ear that some of this shit wasnât exactly saneâŚ
Fortunately, he thought better of it and kept his observations to himself. After all, he was the very last person who should comment on anyone elseâs mental health. Certainly, Red had his own constellation of diagnoses that he continued to battle in the psychiatric realm and might very well have taken offense to any criticism of his friendâs hard work.
The first time Drakkon spoke was when he realized how muffled and muted the world soundedâŚand how very far they had to have traveled in this tunnel system.
âIs it always so dark and quiet?â
Eugene raised a brow as he glanced over his shoulder, almost as if heâd forgotten his former lordship was present. He was calmly explaining how heâd set up these quarters, now somewhere between 15 and 20 feet below ground and in the middle of the goddamn woods, with a series of eavesdropping pipes.Â
Redâs eyes were wide with wonder as he loved the great outdoors and anything nature related. He was utterly in love with the secret rooms, the leave-strewn sort of sky light, the set up for handmade wares, the cozy burrow aesthetic that only an animal could truly appreciate.Â
The crafting of the pipe system would also have fascinated Drakkon, as he loved all things cloak and dagger and sneakyâŚwere it not for the thick, ominous looking door before them. It was different from the other ones, more imposing and impenetrableâŚ
In the recesses of his mind, the tyrant heard the loud grind of hinges and deadbolts sliding home, the choking, wet screams of a defiant 17 year old, and demonic, gleeful laughter.
âDeadlockâŚâ
Heavy chains, blades, straps and whips, the grimy horse trough that caused the Coinless Jason Scott to become hysterical, straightjackets, and potent, mind-alternating injectionsâŚ
Drakkon shook himself, trying to stop the incriminating cascade of his past atrocities even as he tried to peer through the gloom to see if any of it crossed Redâs face, if CJâs heightened emotional response would bleed through the mysterious partitions in his mind.Â
But the other man merely tittered playfully.
âA little rabbit, truly you areâŚâ
Neither expected to see what was just on the other side of that door. Not out here in the middle of the forest, underground, in THIS universe.Â
Drakkon felt the extra saliva trickling into mouth that always accompanied nausea and he swallowed it before he could gag or retch. Looking at the familiar pool stretching away into the darkness, he recognized those specific tiles as they shimmered under the waterâŚthe very ones heâd picked out a whole lifetime ago.
âBecause they were the best and most expensiveâŚthatâs the only thing I knew about them.â
Red stood at the poolâs precipice, face slack, his glasses slid half down his nose as he stared. He didnât speak, didnât flinch when Eugene moved off towards the far corner, leaving the lantern behind, the metal grating against the edge of the pool. But he did pivot and practically sprint after his âlittle rabbitâ.Â
There was yet another room behind another hidden door and when Skull opened it, they were bathed in soft lightâŚnatural light.
The only sound Red could make was a startled intake of breath, like a prey nabbed by a snare, a noise that was both fear and disbelief.
âHow is this here? It was all destroyed⌠None of this can be real!â
It was decorated nearly the same way as the last time he could remember seeing it, in those days before his delusions and hallucinations reached a fever pitch and he suffered large blocks of missing time, crying about ghosts and whispered voices from the mirrors until Drakkon attempted to âbeat the stupidâ out of him. Then heâd spent less and less time in his beloved alcoveâŚuntil the coup that saw them running for their lives in the middle of the night.
There was the table heâd repurposed from a dusty storage room, its surface covered in tubes of paint and the collection of brushes cloistered in a chipped vase, the tin container of loose buttons, scraps of fabric, and small gems that fell loose of their settings and ended up in dark corners, and a stack of books that heâd read so many times he could recite them by heart.
Garrettâs favorite black button up, an unconscious fashion choice that Red made to this day, hung on a hook above a colorful patchwork quilt that sat folded neatly on a rickety chair. The recipe box that once belonged to the old farmerâs wife rested on a shelf next to distinctive black frame glasses, the lenses now scratched and dusty. All the myriad pots and gardening implements he once treasured were bundled into a corner, the box for various seeds full of packets for glass gem corn, Sweet Juliet roses, purple carrots, and other odd plants.Â
Red didnât need to lift the lid to know they still waited inside in orderly rows.
Drakkon wisely waited just outside the door, his breath reflexively held. Heâd heard Red talk about his hidden alcove in the palace, first screamed at him as they both cried like traumatized children and then later when the former pet revealed just a little more and a little more with Tommy and Jason listening, too enthralled to speak.
The tyrant had never seen the alcove, never knew it even existed. Wouldnât have realized there was a hiccup in his palace design.Â
âAt first, it was a place to hide from the perverted Sentries who hunted me, who would try to rape me until the day I tore a few to ribbons. But I donât remember how I came across itâŚâ Red mentioned one evening in the hotel shortly after all the âfireworksâ and the decision to try to move forward. âI wasnât very scary in the beginning.â
Right now, the lithe man looked as if he just might start to cry.Â
âHowâŚâ he whispered, looking at Eugene. âThis isâŚthis is exactly likeâŚâ
He gestured to Garrettâs button up.
âThis canât really be hisâŚâ
Eugene smiled and it wasnât the jovial one that Red knew from their old days together. It was âotherâ but also not completely unknown. It was a âcruel to be kindâ sort of grin, like there was an underlying point to all this.Â
âMemory was the only thing I kept from across the darkâŚâ Skull was saying as Redâs hands sought purchase on the tableâs edge, the world shifting and tilting like a kaleidoscope.Â
He smoothed his palms over the pitted surface, trying to ground himself with the things that surrounded himâŚas Jane had shown him.Â
âFive things I can see⌠a gardening manual, brass buttons, quill nibsâŚhuh?â he whispered frantically to himself. âI donât remember those⌠leather gloves, pocketwatchâŚâ
Redâs brow furrowed. These werenât treasures heâd collected but here they lay. Perhaps Skullâs memory was not as accurate as it first appeared.
âFour things I can feelâŚâ he continued desperately. âRough wood, parchment paper, ivory button, ink wellâŚâ
The technique didnât seem to be working. If anything, scrutinizing this tableau made him feelâŚoff-kilter. Homesick, disgustingly homesick, but home wasnât following all the rules.
âThree things I can hear⌠wind in the leaves, birds chirping, a ticking clockâŚâ
Redâs knees buckled and he went down, dropping to the floor and pulling the button container, the leather gloves, and the pocketwatch with him.
Reflexively, Drakkon started forward, to pull his partner to him, to see if he was alright, but the sightless look in the other manâs eyes stopped him from entering. He was starting to dissociate, something that often preceded a panic attack or an explosion of violence and rage. It was a coin toss as to what exactly would happen.
âAnd that little shit didnât leave the ânight-nightâ juiceâ!â
Eugeneâs frame was blocking his path and every nerve in Drakkonâs body signaled a warning against touching him, an ill-advised move under normal circumstances and more so right now when ghosts were whispering softly words that he couldnât translate and it felt like it had just turned thirteen oâclock.
But his darling was in distress and, unlike his past self, the tyrant wanted to comfort him. Even if that meant getting his ass torn to shreds.
He shouldnât have been that surprised when Eugene (?) easily intercepted him, planting his back against the wall with one hand over his chest.Â
âSkullâs not home right nowâŚâ echoed wildly through Drakkonâs head.Â
Apparently, there were some ground rules regarding their stay.Â
âDonât have sex in here or in any of the other rooms Iâve shown youâŚâ Eugene stated coolly, his eyes reflecting a strange orangish glow that had to be a trick of the light in here, yet they both knew better. âI donât care if you make out or get it on in the living room or the guest room or the shower or even the laundry room. I can air those out and clean up any of those placesâŚâ
Drakkon was flummoxed despite the overall weirdness and hint of danger. As if heâd try to fuck anyone surrounded by dirt, roots, worms, and decaying shit! Not that he COULDNâT mind youâŚbut there was such a thing as ambianceâŚ
(This isnât about that, you little idiot.)
Eugeneâs mouth didnât move, the tone wasnât even exactly his, nor did those words come from Red who was rhythmically rocking and staring into space as if hypnotized. His partnerâs hands fluttered about his head, wrists rolling, fingers threading air like smoothing threads, while alternately holding his head.
The orchestral moves werenât something that Drakkon had ever seen Red do before, an almost elegant form of psychomotor agitation. Usually it was hair pulling, pacing, and fidgeting with his clothing. Eugene glanced over once, his expression mild and not at all concerned.
âIâm going to leave you to, ahâŚto yourselves for a little bit,â he went on, emphasizing âyourselvesâ in a way that clearly meant something more than was being said. âLet you have a moment and a littleâŚtalk. But Iâm going to need to hear you say you understand me.â
It took a moment for Drakkonâs mind to decipher what Skull was wanting. Weird shit was happeningâŚspooky shit, actually. He forced a stilted nod, almost too anxious to speak.Â
âSo I can hear you please,â Eugene ordered, pressing harder on the tyrantâs chest.Â
Drakkon felt warmth at his left ear, a feeling of vertigo washing over him and worsening the nausea that hadnât fully gone away.
(Play nice and donât bite, nowâŚbe a good boyâŚyou can do itâŚ)
âIâŚunderstandâŚâ he finally grunted with effort.
Skull gave him another creepy grin that was surface level only. He removed his hand and straightened, hands behind his back.Â
âThereâs a good boy. Iâll let you have some privacy. Maybe bring down some food later; weâll see where my mood is then. Ta!â
Then the former Sentry was gone, disappearing through the door and into the darkness.Â
Drakkon had registered how fast his heart was beating until after Skull had departed and the oppressive âwallâ that pressed against his skin had lessened. He forced himself to move, striding quickly towards where Red curled with his forehead on the floor and tears trickling from his lashes.Â
âDarling?â the tyrant murmured gently, reaching out to put a hand on the quivering shoulders.
He had no more than grazed the soft cotton fabric of his shirt when Red visibly tensed, a low growl of warning deep in his throat that wafted through the still air and felt like a physical thing.
âI donât want you in here.â
The words came from where the grey-haired man hunkered but the pitch and enunciation wereâŚwrong⌠They were articulated and âproperâ. Maybe a hint of accent?Â
Drakkon just had time to wonder if this was some fucked up drunken dream or hallucination when Red swiftly stood, posture straight rather than hunched as if apologizing for existing. Heâd been holding the immaculate leather gloves in his lap. Now, he gracefully pulled them on, turning each hand to and fro like a gentleman from another era.
His eyes lifted to linger directly on those hazel ones heâd come to know so well.
And Drakkon felt a rush of terror when he saw that Redâs eyes were somehowâŚgold. Both of themâŚ
âIâŚâ
A gloved finger wagged in scolding; Redâs mouth lifted in a chilly smirk.
âYou were never supposed to be in here. This isnât your place, this is my place,â he growled, stalking slowly toward him. âNow, thenâŚGet. Out.â
âButâŚâ Drakkon tried, still attempting to make sense out of this whole Halloween bullshit, sure that this was some juvenile prank cooked up by Eugene and Red to âget his goat.â
Then gloved hands were pressing against his shoulders, forcing him backwards from the room. Red had always been deceptively strong despite his lithe build, more like a male ballet dancer than a brawler like Jason Scott. The raw strength behind just this movement caught the tyrant off-guard until he was stumbling backwards into warm water.Â
Red stared down at him from the poolâs edge, fingers spinning silk in the air near his hip.Â
âAllow me my sorrow for now, just for now, without your incessant need to butt into every corner of my lifeâŚâ he snarled, the dried tears on his cheeks leaving behind thin streaks of ruddy irritation.Â
Then, Red spun on his heel and crossed back to the faux alcove.Â
âStay there, dragon!â
Drakkon was about to argue, to demand to know exactly when the pet had started to talk like that, using bigger, fancier words than heâd used even in the Grimâs fairy tale world theyâd left, but his voice died in his throat. Heâd seen the rage, the mindless fury Red didnât mind showing in a fight, the anguish that made him look not like Red but also not like Jason either. It defied logic.
He was a hobbyist of the mind much like Jane, the neighbor lady that Red had taken a shine to, however, the tyrant had perverted that knowledge into a weapon to wound and scar. He knew quite a bit about DID after coming to the Prime Universe, that an alter had their own microexpressions, tone of voice, posture, body language, talents and strengths. It was why the older man and the Omega could stand side by side and not look like time-separated twins. Red didnât just look like an older Jason Scott, that was the thing.
âClose enough to know but different enough to make you almost second guessâŚâ
Drakkon wasnât certain if Red meant for him to just stay out here in the room or to stay in the pool itself. However at the rate things were going in this fucked up escapade, he decided to not take chances. Standing in water as warm as fresh piss was better than agitating whoever or whatever the hell had just given him a command.
The sky outside had dimmed to a soft purple and the birds had settled into their nests for the night. These were things that Drakkon couldnât know, waiting stupidly in the pool that was a replica of his once great bath. He felt as dumb as an ox, unsure how long this wretched visit had left. From somewhere in the tunnels came the click of a door and footsteps over cobblestones.
âGreatâŚnow I have a peanut galleryâŚâ
But Eugene didnât even look his way as he passed the pool, striding towards the door that Red had disappeared behind earlier. His face was blank, from what little the tyrant could tell in the gloom, detached, cold maybe⌠In his hands was a serving tray with a tea pot, a pair of mugs, and a jar of yellow goo.
As the former Sentry crossed the room, there came that sensation of whispering ghosts and phantom breezes that caressed his mind. It made the hair on his neck stand on end.
Skull approached the door, not bothering to knock or announce his arrival. And somehow the door opened just as he moved to cross the threshold. Then it firmly slammed shut once more.
âGoddamn, I really hope I just drank too much and this is some horror hallucination from a Steven King plot that my brain latched ontoâŚâ
He knew it wasnât the case.
When he entered, Oryctolagus nodded politely at his visitor, who was perched on a rocky outcropping that overlooked the woods. The man returned the acknowledgement, snapping his pocketwatch shut with a soft click and slipping it into a shirt pocket.
(You remember how I take my tea. Iâm touched)
While not spoken aloud, the sentiment passed as easily as if they had. If spoken, one would have mistaken it for Latin perhapsâŚsomething archaic and mystical. Not realizing how right they would be about that last bit.
The rabbit sat the serving tray between them after settling a respectful distance apart on the ledge.
(Honey, fresh from the comb. Black tea. Warm. Canis is more fond of coffee. This was a gamble.)
A toothy smile that wasnât Eugeneâs own curled his lips.
(I rather thought you werenât talking. Or fronting, Vulpes.)
Redâs gloved hands moved delicately as they poured tea into a cup and spooned in a generous heap of honey.
(It's never been my preference toâŚfront. Iâm one who watches. Strategizes. Plots. Not that I canâtâŚtake the reins, as they say. I havenât had to do that since the palace.)
He sipped the warm brew, looking over his glasses at his âkinâ for lack of a better term. Skull prepared his drink, straight black tea, no honey.
(I sensed you, Fox, on my way over. Just a vibration. Canis wasnât hard to pick up.)
Redâs grin was mischievous.Â
(Yes. He is much bigger than I am. Stronger since heâs been our primary for so long. But that was the point.)
His hands gestured as if petting something.
(Look at the precious puppyâŚdonât look over here where Iâm waiting in my den. All of Jasonâs strategic and battle talents, those things that HE was most eager to get access to, excised and stored with me.)
He laughed merrily, further stirring his tea and clinking the spoon against the china.Â
(Canis can fight, yes, but he cannot breach the part of our mind that Iâve restricted him from. Not until the time was right. He can plan short-term and that was sufficient.)
Oryctolagus tilted his head in curiosity. His mode of operating and how heâd arrived hadnât been the same. Vastly different circumstances meant that altered their âlifeâ outside the Grid.
(You were working behind the scenesâŚplaying the long game, Vulpes.)
The fox finished his tea, sitting the cup back on the server before standing and strolling towards the table top. He plucked a book, the gardening manual, from it lay amongst the others.
(We learned chemistry this wayâŚthose same innocent ingredients in fertilizer are configured in a way that makes a very noise. Simple nitrogen, water, and oxygenâŚNot just a means of self-sustenance in the future with farming.)
He flipped through the pages briskly, the familiar pictures and words echoing through Redâs eyes.Â
(I learned the layout of the palace, the surrounding grounds, the guard rotation, the weak spots in the perimeter. I knew all of Drakkonâs âtellsâ, how to subtly manipulate when necessary just as I gave Canis gentle nudges towards plants and nature.)
Skull nodded in understanding, placing his own cup back with the other.
(You were setting up the chess board. Clever.)
Vulpes smiled a matching toothy grin, more vulpine than human.
(I sowed dissent, whispered rumors, wrote the threats⌠I switched the potions in Finster-5âs lab, sabotaged what I needed to without anyone the wiser. Canis could be a riot, but myself? I was the coup.)
He bowed grandly.
(Unfortunately, Canis had grown too strong, too massive. Even if we managed to escape the palace, that lovestruck mutt would have fought me, tried to go back. Communication between usâŚdid not go well. He called me a ghost, the âone who watchesâ.)
He shrugged and heaved a sigh.
(I only had one shot to do this right. And I like my equations clean. This wasnât going to work out in the end, but I suppose in a round-about way it did.)
(Have you tried to talk to Canis now? Since coming here? Or CJâŚ)
The fox shook his head.
(Neither Canis or the boy are stable enough. Even Iâm not altogether there, a silent witness to mass homicide and depravity. Because we formed from a broken mind, the dog and I are no longer the same as we once were and that makes itâŚcomplicated.)
(Explain.)
(When one walks over a shattered mirror, pieces get embedded in the feetâŚor paws.)
Vulpes smiled at the joke.
(That mirror was CJâs mind. We picked up pieces when we walked through. I myself curated certain aspects intentionally. And because of that we arenât only Grid animalsâŚwe are now hybridized as it wereâŚ)
Eugene nodded as if that made perfect sense and held up the teapot to see if a refill was desired.
(Oh yes, Iâd love another cup. Who knows how long until I have another? As the gatekeeper/fail safe/historian in residence, I have to ease our shared mindscape into a sort of treaty and they are not ready.)
Orychtolagus politely refilled his companionâs mug, sliding the honey closer with a jovial chuckle.
(And the one out there in the water, like a piece of shit floating in the bowl⌠No longer the mighty dragon to be slain. Heâs the one who follows your body like a puppy now. Have you overlooked his transgression as Canis did?)
At the mention of the tyrant, Vulpes expression turned into one of disgust, as if considering which piece of rot heâd be willing to touch.
(No, most definitely not. He is trying to pay a penance that canât be repaid. Not in one lifetime, more not several.)
(Do you wanna fuck around with him? In a purely non-sexual manner, of course. Heâs at the door now, trying to puzzle us out, as if he could hear usâŚIt might be a bit of a lark for you.)
Vulpes chuckled darkly, his eyes reflecting the scant light like a wild creature.
(Youâre too kind, rabbit. Setting this up on the off chance Iâd venture out. Yes, Iâd like a word with that bossy motherfuckerâŚ)
Drakkon strained to hear any sound coming from the other side of the thick wood. There was absolutely nothing, no hushed whispers, rustle of paper, shifting of weightâŚ
âAre they just sitting there staring at each other or something?â
The soft caress of whispers grew stronger when he first approached the closed door, like words on another plane of realityâŚnothing ârealâ.
He was leaning hard into the door when it suddenly swung open, causing him to stumble ass over end into the reproduction of Redâs sanctuary. It wasnât dignified and he knew his cheeks were flushed with embarrassment. Unfortunately, things were not about to get any easier.
Red and Eugene favored him with wide, animalistic smiles, full of sharp teethâŚor at least they looked like Red and Eugene.Â
âOther⌠the Grid⌠the animalsâŚâ
The tyrant didnât know where those thoughts came from, only that they lodged in his brain like a scalpel.Â
âMiss me, your Majesty? Itâs been too long since youâve held courtâŚâ his partner cooed. âAnd I imagine the view is quite different from down there.â
Drakkonâs mouth opened and closed before he managed the only question his muzzy mind could grasp.Â
âYou two were back here having a tea party?âÂ
His voice sounded far away and distorted.
Red deftly flipped the cover of the pocketwatch and exchanged a look of pity with Eugene.
âOur Red Queen is lateâŚfor a very important dateâŚâ
âShameful,â Skull chastised the tyrant. âOff with his headâŚItâs only proper etiquette, isnât it? I donât remember the rulesâŚâ
Drakkon stiffened, feeling the first prickles of fear descend his spine like a multitude of tiny spiders.Â
âWhat are you playing at?â
Redâs head tilted slightly as he returned the shiny watch to his shirt pocket, the look of pity on his face shifting to something like disappointmentâŚand something colder.
âDear heart, we havenât even started to âplayâ, but rest assured, you wonât be physically harmed. Weâre going to be theatrical so you appreciate that outlandish fuckery so much. Iâm far more interested in frolicking in your head. After all, two can play that game, am I right, White Rabbit?â
Now, he understood the cheeky angle they were going for⌠The Wonderland bullshit again. Drakkon remembered the whispers in the palace, and heâd punished the scoundrels who spread that stupid theory.
He glared into those strange, golden eyes that were not Redâs.
âVery funny, âdarlingâ,â the tyrant hissed, wishing he could get up from his knees but finding his legs wouldnât obey. âWeâre doing this Alice in Wonderland comparison for this intervention too? Letâs see if I remember the cast correctly. Iâm sure youâll correct me if Iâm wrongâŚâ
He lifted his arm through the air that felt like molasses to point, first at himself.
âRed Queen or Mad Hatter depending on who was bumping their gums.â
Then Drakkon gestured to Eugene.
âApparently youâre the aggravating White Rabbit.â
His gaze went back to the entity inhabiting his partnerâs body.
âRed was the March Hare. And Iâm guessing Jason would be innocent little AliceâŚHow am I doing so far?â
The grey-haired man inclined his head slightly, his fingers making creepy fluttering movements. Drakkon searched his face, trying to think back to a time when the pet had behaved this way and came up empty.
âWell, who are you supposed to be then? Donât be coy. Youâve obviously got something to say to me.â
Those vulpine eyes glittered dangerously as Red chuckled.
âMe? Iâm the thing that Alice hid when the Queenâs world got too madâŚthe weapon to keep out of sight.â
He knelt down, eye level with Drakkon.
âIâm the Vorpal Blade. And this isnât an intervention, your Majesty. Itâs your reckoningâŚâ
Though Drakkon wouldnât remember specifically what happened that night, it left a scar that tugged at his mind.Â
For the next several hours, Vulpes and Orychtolagus psychologically eviscerated their adversary. They never raised their voice or showed any sign of strong emotion. Their accusations and observations were clinical and detachedâŚand agonizingly sharp.
âYou think no one understands you, but I do. I see exactly what you areâŚan angry child with the trappings of a man. You possessed a coin but that never gave you real power.â
âYou were just loud.â
âYou donât love controlâŚyouâre just terrified of abandonment.â
âYou didnât break us. We merely evolved.â
âYou bruised flesh and frightened minds. Yet you couldnât reach the coreâŚdidnât notice who else was in the kingdom.â
âWhole people would never bow to you.â
Drakkon tried to cut in, to stop their condescending voices.Â
âStop it! I was feared throughout the galaxy! They trembled at my name!â
Oryctolagus sighed as if the tyrant were missing a large and obvious point.
âI seeâŚso youâre nothing more than a nameâŚâ
The fox gave a soft growl, the only indication that he felt much of anything.
âYou were the fire that melted our mind, the forge I was born from. I was sharpened with the boyâs knowledge and skill. Right under your nose. I usurped your orders, sowed dissent, lit the fuse for chaos so many times and never once did you consider that the call was coming from inside the house.â
âYou were too cowardly to face me,â Drakkon hissed, trying to elicit more information. âWhy didnât you strike me down? Or run? You hid in mirrorsâŚa ghost. What kind of weapon is that, Vorpal Blade?â
To his surprise, Red laughed loudly.
âThe mind often hides its strongest defense deep. I spent almost twenty years studying you up closeâŚin your unguarded moments. I listened to your secrets, analyzed your body language and expressions, your tone of voice. It was either outwit or out last, motherfucker.â
He turned his back, wrists curling invisible ribbons.
âYou weren't all that difficult to manipulate once the dog chewed on your bone. More pathetic than fearsome, to be honest. Not so mighty when youâre sobbing, nose full of snot and pleading with the very thing you broke not to leave you.â
Drakkon hadnât realized heâd been crying until he licked his lips and tasted salt.Â
âYou were the reason all along. The âSwiss Cheeseâ brain, being bad with time, the black outsâŚâ
Pieces were falling into place now. A third alterâŚwatching him from behind Redâs eyes. And laughing apparently. Heâd always thought it strange that Coinless Jason only had one when it was more common to have several.
âNot that anything about any of this eerie shit followed rules or accepted parametersâŚâ
âAll those clusterfucks⌠You sabotaged me at every turn, didnât you?â
Vulpes glanced back almost regally over one shoulder.
âSometimes⌠or I just had to throw out the bread crumbs when the right person wandered too close.â
His shoes clipped over the stones as he returned to the table covered in irreplaceable treasures. One by one the gloves came off to be properly folded and put away.
âAwwwâŚdonât worry, Queen,â Eugene soothed. âThis isnât something youâll remember later. Just feel. We only thought you should feel the weight of forever like we do.â
He patted the former dictatorâs head like an animal or a small child.
âTo be fair, you didnât stand a chance. When a dark empath and a narcissist cross paths, the narc gets destroyed in fairly short order. And you were up against two of usâŚâ
Skull shrugged.
âWe just gave you understanding in spadesâŚâ
The next concrete thing that Drakkon was aware of was sitting in a room of the tunnel, a Mountain Dew in his hand and a book of fairy tales open in his lap. Red was sitting at his knee, smiling and nibbling on some of the fruits of Eugeneâs garden that heâd brought down at some point.
âYouâre getting to the good part! Donât stop now!â
He jumped up to settle at his partnerâs side.
âDo you need me to turn the page? Youâve been staring at this one for at least five minutes now!â
From somewhere behind them, footsteps scrabbled over river stones and they could hear Jason, Tommy, Billy, and Matt talking amongst themselves.
Redâs face brightened even further.
âTheyâre back!â
Tommy looked exasperated when he entered and found his counterpart with another bottle of the highly caffeinated beverage.
âI hope to fuck youâve been behaving yourself down here. We just had the night from hell with everyone nosing about the cabin,â he grumbled. âI kept worrying weâd forgotten to hide something!â
Jason hugged Red about his shoulders, leaning over to pull him into the embrace.
âAre you feeling alright?â
The older man nodded, nibbling a piece of fruit.
âYeahâŚI had a really bad headache earlier but I think it passed pretty quick.â
Matt scratched his head, brow raised.
âThatâs weird. Eugeneâs still in bed upstairsâŚsaid something about a migraine and a reckoning? I dunno. He might have been having one of those vivid dreams again.â
Drakkon was quiet. He didnât remember coming to this section of the tunnel or picking up the book or even opening his drink. It was a huge blank.Â
So why did he feel like someone had just taken the piss out of him?????
The fox usually contented itself in the courtyard, appearing at odd times and often for no discernable reason. Red had spotted the lithe creature stretched out in the grass, sunning itself, or slinking about the fountain with its ornate marble dragon posed dramatically in the center. When he could get away with it, Red watched the sneaky beast to see what it could possibly be up to in a palace.Â
No one ever attempted to chase it off or voiced complaints about a nuisance animal that wasnât Red himself. The farmers would arrive with their wares in carts and wagons without being menaced. It wasnât destructive to the grounds.
âI donât think it has rabies,â Red mused, observing the fox from the outer door to the kitchens, a place the servants wished heâd stop lurking in. âNo foam on the muzzle. No aggression, but it isnât timid either.â
The fox strolled amongst the burly men as they unloaded meats, vegetables, fruits, eggs, and honeycombs. No drunken, stumbling gait, no shaking, no signs of paralysis in its limbsâŚ
âIf it's not infected, why is it acting so strange?â
When the fox began showing up more frequently, Red had pestered Finster-5 for access to the library. The aggravated alien gave in to shut him up, not seeing any danger in the mutt wanting to read about some filthy forest beast. Hunting for the book would give Red something to do besides his juvenile antics or getting into some type of delusional snit.
The slim paperback was jammed against the back of the shelf, smashed by larger tomes. It was glossy and brightly colored, a childâs simplistic educational book. Heâd almost missed it, as it had also been misfiled some time ago.
But Red had found it by some odd stroke of luck.
He was cycling through the facts heâd learned about vulpines when the foxâs triangular face swiveled in his direction, golden eyes meeting his own.
And when the animal lifted its muzzle, it wasnât a warning.Â
Red knew a grin when he saw one.
He didnât have a reason to keep watch on the intruder as it was no threat to Lord Drakkon. Red knew that if he were somehow incapacitated or absent, his master would have no difficulty in snapping the foxâs neck before it could even growl.Â
So when Red discovered the creature curled on a jacquard cushion in the tyrantâs private chambers, tail draped over dainty paws, he made no move to scruff it or shoo it away.Â
âIf that prissy ass kisser, Chester, hasnât thrown a fit over an animal on the expensive furniture, it must be permitted.â
The condescending manservant did not like messy things. He didnât like Red in particular which suited the pet just fine. Red had bitten him once, sinking his teeth into the bastardâs arm after Chester took a broom to him for some perceived transgression. The taste of him was shit but he never attempted to correct Drakkonâs canine again.Â
Red decided that since no one else took issue with the foxâs residence, then he wasnât going to trouble himself with it either. It didnât really DO anything. There were times that he went looking for it because the beast occasionally disappeared.
That was not the same as the fox being gone.Â
He might not be able to locate it, but the pet felt its presence, heard the click of its claws on the stone or a soft âchirrâ or gekker. Red once caught sight of the bushy tail disappearing around a corner as he assisted his master into his regalia. The clever thing also managed to slip through the many mirrors in the palace, watching from the looking glass.
GrinningâŚ
If Drakkon were in residence, Red was much too busy to play hide and seek with the thing. Perhaps it decided to show proper deference to the master and remove itself. At least, the creature had manners.Â
âAnd I donât have to clean up after itâŚâ
Soon, the fox was as much a fixture of the palace as Red himself.Â
Red was young when the fox arrived, his cheeks only covered by a fine growth of hair. Age was irrelevant for a palace pet as birthdays were for people. Besides, the canineâs sense of time was as spotty as his linguistic ability.Â
For the gala celebrating his masterâs day of Ascension (or maybe of birth, Red couldnât recall), the palace was in an uproar preparing for the festivities. The overstimulation grated on the canineâs nerves and he had already gotten hold of three Sentries that morning.Â
Unfortunately, the skirmishes took place in the throne room, the dining hall, and the long corridor from the entrance, staining emerald runners, tapestries, and expensive tribute gifts from overseas with splashes of blood and ripped flesh.Â
Chester was beside himself with the mess. His lordship would be returning soon and expected a luxurious ball to commemorate this historic day. He poked at Red with a cattle prod, trying to corral the pissy mutt back upstairs and out of the thick of things.Â
âItâs stressful enough without that loony abomination acting out,â he grumbled to Finster-5, whoâd come out of his laboratory to see what all the yelling and profanity was about. âI canât have him down there scaring or mauling the staff and ruining the decor!â
Finster-5 huffed.
âI certainly donât have time for his foolishness myself. I knew from the beginning that this whole thing was a terrible idea.â
He stormed towards where Red huddled on the lounger, his expression sullen and promising more fuckery. Â
âWhy must you insist on being a nuisance? More trouble than youâre worth in my opinion! Both of you!â
Red was ignoring the scolding, his arms around his legs as he rocked. But Finster wasnât done venting his frustration.
âI should have put you out of your misery the moment I found you. Rita would be alive and no one would have to put up with you and your insanity!â
The canine stopped rocking and rudely spat at the scientistâs feet, stopping his approach.
âVile beast! If you donât cease and desist, if you ruin Lord Drakkonâs banquet, Iâll see to it that he knows it was all your doing, that it was deliberate sabotage, and you laughed while doing it!â
Red started to fire off a torrent of obscenity, but movement over Finsterâs shoulder caused him to falter. It wasnât a yield though it was accepted as one. He stared intently at the mirror near the staircase as something shifted behind the looking glass.
Slowly one black âstockingedâ paw then the other stepped over the gilt frame and onto the embroidered rug. The fox rested there a moment, half in and half out, of the shimmering surface. It had to do that when crossing. Red vaguely recalled a phrase about âgetting your sea legsâ and assumed this was a similar situation.Â
Finster continued to make snide comments to Chester about his regrets but did not reveal the details of Redâs arrival at the palace, where he came from, how he became so goddamn insufferable. The pet continued to watch the fox, brow furrowed in confusion.
It wasnât that the creature emerged from the mirror; it had been doing that for some time. Red used to wonder how it did so even going up to one and tapping at the glass with hesitant fingers. No one else reacted as if such a thing were remarkable. They continued about their business so he did too.
What caused Red to stare incredulously was the waistcoat, a deep burgundy brocade with brass, gear-shaped buttons, and the top hat perched on his head. Velvety ears twitched from where protruded beside the large goggles perched on the brim. Their iridescent lenses shimmered in the light as the fox turned to look at him.
Finster rolled his eyes at Redâs seemingly catatonic reaction. He waved Chester away and the two descended the stone staircase, their footsteps clipping along the risers.
From the floor above, they heard Redâs blunt, childish insult.
âYou look dumbâŚâ
The haughty alien grabbed the servantâs arm, stopping him from turning around and igniting another bitch fit with the obstinate mutt.
âWhen Red decides to be petty or bullish, itâs rarely worth the pissing match. Only with his lordship, that abomination doesnât mouth off or start baring his teeth. Just be glad heâs out from underfoot for now.â
âWith Lord Drakkon, Red is all peaches and cream. Everyone else is a faceless pool of potential chew toys.âÂ
Their footsteps faded yet the pet didnât notice they were gone. He was glaring at the fox in its bizarre human attire. Red could only surmise that some infantile fool had decided to stuff the little animal in the absurd outfit.
âYou should have bit them,â he huffed as the fox trotted closer. âI would have.â
The muzzle opened, revealing small sharp teeth, the foxâs version of a grin. And Red heard the clever creatureâs dignified retort.
âI assure you that this was not taken off the rack. This is a custom design, darlingâŚâ
It was the perfunctory response given by those no longer unsettled by the petâs bizarre behaviors. The point of curiosity or anything like compassion had long since passed, and as Redâs aggression and emotional lability grew more volatile, he became less of a traumatized victim in the court of public opinion.Â
A surface level explanation for deeply tragic psychic wounds.
When his lordship was in residence, Red managed to reel in most of his outlandish antics, being too busy guarding and pleasing the tyrant to indulge in dysregulation, spiteful fuckery, or other devious horseplay. Not that Drakkonâs proximity made the palace more peaceful or safe as he was of worse disposition than the loony mutt.
Rage-fueled outbursts were the most obvious of Redâs ill-conduct, even if the reasons werenât readily apparent. Finster-5 missed the early days when the pet was largely silent and docile, seen and not heard, more outwardly contained instead of the egregiously theatrical caricature he gradually became.
The visual and auditory hallucinations started long before the poor conduct. Red heard the voice first, a singular, eloquent one, that supplied the occasional dry commentary or suggestion. It could be condescending at times, annoying, using vocabulary far too big for Red to understand.
âSmartassâŚâ the frustrated canine grumbled, struggling to identify some mundane object that he was positive he knew but had lost the name for. âIf youâre so wise, you can tell me what this fucking thing is!â
There was a beat of silence.
Then, simplyâŚ
âI canât.â
âSmug prick! You can! But you wonât because you like making me feel stupid!â Red seethed under his breath.
Those servants in the vicinity observed the abomination muttering in the corner and chose to feign unawareness of his presence. Red didnât acknowledge them either, too busy tittering curses for some unfathomable reason.
âSome words are load-bearing. Knowing which are, which might be, and which are mere casualties of architecture crafted under duress isnât a simple thing,â the mysterious speaker whispered kindly. âI take no pleasure in your misery.â
Red deemed them full of shit and demanded they go fuck themself.
He couldnât understand why such simple labels should be missing. There was no difficulty in finding obscenities, threats, rude insults, or sexual innuendo. âDirty wordsâ were always within Redâs reach.
There were occasions when the term he wanted, the one on the tip of his tongue that kept evaporating, was immediately replaced with a new one. It would slide into the empty slot and Red would feel a momentary sense of relief.Â
âNot what I was looking for but still correct.â
Red was busying himself digging through a box of scavenged items that Finster-5 had ordered be brought from the ruins of a city that once existed outside the perimeter wall. The master was out on a campaign against the Coinless ilk and the sniveling little scientist was nowhere in sight.Â
The pet was bored and stalked the length of the corridor as the Sentries carried in their loot. Most gave him a wide berth as they did so. None was going to command Red to stay out of Finster-5âs newest acquisitions.Â
âWhatâs that beast going to do with a bunch of damaged junk?â one muttered. âIf he wanted to chew on anything, it isnât as if heâd make it more useless.â
It didnât matter that the items were dented, scorched, torn, or missing pieces. Red was curious as he delved into the mangled remnants of a time he could no longer remember. He recognized a few of them but most were mysterious relics.Â
The pocket watch caught his attention the moment he uncovered it. Its gold casing was engraved with delicate scrollwork and somehow retained some of its shine beneath scraps of fabric and snapped wires.Â
Redâs breath stuttered to a stop, his eyes widening in delight. Such a pretty little thing! He scooped it into gloved hands, watching the way the light reflected off the rounded sides. A broken chain dangled from the warped bow at the top.
âI know what this is! Iâve seen one before!â
Heâd known someone that possessed such an item⌠It wasnât his master. The pet was sure of that but at that moment, it really didnât matter. The point was that Red knew this lovely creationâs name.
âSinum custodibus.â
It came out in a whisper and it came outâŚwrong.Â
Red tired again.
âSinum custodibusâŚâ he hissed more forcefully.Â
The word sounded correct in his head yet twisted in his mouth, arriving vastly different when it reached his ears. Red could feel the first siren song of rage starting to ripen in his chest.
âSinum custodibus!â he shrieked just as Finster-5 rounded the corner to his laboratory.
âBad dog!â he chastised sternly, wagging a finger in Redâs flushed face. âI know Iâve told you before about touching things that arenât yours!â
He snatched the time piece from the muttâs palm.
âBeasts donât wear pocket watches, you know. Those are for gentlemen!â the alien continued to scold. âNow you go find something else to amuse you before I give you a good smack!â
Red had given him the finger, but he did leave the weird smelling room with its strange metal equipment and glass jars.Â
âPocket watchâŚâ
That was the word heâd been hunting first. The other just slipped through the cracks in its place.Â
Again he tried to ground out the odd name, slowly enunciating each part so that it matched what he knew it was supposed to sound like. Again, the sounds were stubbornly distorted.
âYouâre trying to use vetus linguaâŚthe old tongue,â the prim voice offered. âThe one they couldnât articulate properly as it wasnât physiologically possible. It was their approximation that they began to refer to as Latin.â
âI donât give a fuck!â Red snapped without warning, causing a trio of maids to startle and dash off as if the devil himself were set upon them. âIt wonât cooperate!â
âBecause it canât. Your vocal chords and throat structure wonât allow it.â
Of course, the pet refused to give it up and spent the remainder of the afternoon trying to force the term into submission. When he couldnât, when a contingent of Sentries started to snicker and whisper amongst themselves, Red finally had enough and seemingly erupted into violence unprovoked.Â
No one cared to find out how heâd gotten there.
The fox started visiting the palace grounds much later, when the weather was warmer. There was still color in the world; it hadnât yet leeched away. Red noticed the richly hued fur before he recognized the animal itself, sitting as still as a statue near the parade grounds.Â
The thick russet brush idly twitched as did the velvety ears when sounds from the Sentry drills clanged in the crisp air. Red watched it from the bedchamber window as Lord Drakkon prepared to address the aristocracy. He was mentally rehearsing his threatening speech when he noticed his captive in the mirrorâs reflection, curled on the lounger and apparently with his head up his ass.
The tyrant whistled sharply, jarring Red from his study of the small fox.
âWhat are you doing daydreaming like a lazy fool?â Drakkon demanded irritably. âThat look on your face isnât you scanning for Coinless rebels!â
Immediately, Red slid to the emerald runner. He crawled beseechingly to his masterâs boots, his stomach brushing the floor in submission.
âForgive me, master. I just saw aâŚâ
But the dictator silenced him with a swift kick to his ribs, knocking him to his back and gasping for breath.
âI donât care. The only thing you should be focused on is me! Iâm starting to think that you want that filth to invade! To take over! To execute me in the square!â
