It's all gonna shift, it's out of our hands Babe if you could know, you would hatch a plan That's my, that's my man If we're gonna die, bury us alive If they're searching for us they'll find us side by side That's my, that's my man This world is gonna burn, burn burn burn As long as we're going down... Baby you should stick around
My Heart is a Hollow Plain
For the devil to dance again And the room is too quiet I was looking for the breath of a life A little touch of a heavenly light But all the choirs in my head sang, no
This Will Be Your Legacy
Ettore sat in the completely quiet, completely dark Addington home and stared at the blank television on the wall. Through the large, pure glass french doors there was a balcony and a beautiful view of Lake Michigan beyond. He was toying with a rubber ball, bouncing it absently against the floor and catching it without even trying. He was laying across the sofa, his gaze directed toward the ceiling as he went over the day's events and fought off jetlag. They had only been in America for a week and he was still struggling with adapting to the different time zone and lifestyle.
Really, he just missed Florence and Italy.
--------------
Drew sat on a stool across from Gracie in his basement lab and watched her, eyes sparkling, as she explored every nook and cranny. From the vintage, souped up vehicles, to the vials and serums lining shelves. POGO whirred around her legs, squeaking happily and handing her various books and manuals along with a few tools Drew allowed him to touch.
"So?" Drew waved his arms around, "what do you think? No matter what you do, this place is indestructible... though Keera may argue with you on that."
Way Back Home
Ettore’s back flattened against the poured concrete wall. Their lips met, catching him off guard although he had no clue why. He should have anticipated this, he should have been the one initiating it. He leaned into the kiss desperately, his fingers running through her hair, passion rising ever higher and coursing through him. His entire body inclined still closer to her. Every inch of him was suddenly aching for contact with her. Even as she drew away, his lips remained parted, desiring more.
His breath was ragged, he fought to catch it and then fought still harder to steady it. He watched her, eyes alert and bright with adrenaline and maybe something else… a feeling he couldn’t quite describe but it made his head light. Ett slunk across the narrow corridor and slid down against the wall until he was sitting right beside her, his legs kicked out in front of him.
“Hey,” he rested his cheek on her shoulder and stared straight ahead toward gray cement, “look, I didn’t die. Takes a lot more than a total apocalypse to kill this kid.” He closed his eyes, content to stay that way forever, overjoyed to hear his first language being spoken. It had been a long time since he had heard anyone mutter Italian… besides the dead, that was.
It was just the two of them, all other noise and thoughts had drowned out. His body ached wearily, but it had all been worth it. This had been the moment he had held out hope for. This had been the reason he had left Chicago even if he hadn’t realized it at the time. This was where he belonged.
His unruly hair flopped into his face and over his eyes as he wrapped one free arm around her and pulled her in close to him.
They clung to one another for what felt like hours, Ett comforted the sobs from her, kissing her forehead, twirling her hair in his fingers, squeezing her.
“Dovremmo andare a letto,” he whispered into her ear, not seductively as he may have in times past, but simply and almost tenderly. He took her hand and lifted her to her feet. Ett tugged her down the hallway before allowing her to take the lead and guide them to her cot.

Until There's No Place Left To Go
“Keep up, Ettore!” the light sound of Guilia’s laughter filled the air as she was already one rooftop ahead of him and gaining speed. Her feet were light, quick against the tiled roof they were stealthily fleeing across.
This had been their mission, theirs alone. Benedetto had entrusted this to them and it was a big one. During the debrief, he had explained that the diplomat was one of the Templar leaders and constantly surrounded by security. He had looked hesitant before sending the twins off but Guilia was impatient and Ett’s eyes had sparked with desire for the hunt and the kill.
 Here they were. Moscow, Russia.
“Tori!” She was laughing again, obviously enjoying herself. “We did it!”
The wind whipped through their hair, hers trailing like a flag behind her. Their clothes were dark, blending them in with the nighttime surroundings.
Ett laughed recklessly too, her giggles were contagious as she slowed to give him a chance to catch up. They ran abreast now, she glanced over at him and smiled, her dagger gripped tightly in her fist. Their mission was a easy success. Only glory awaited them as they left the gore long behind. Benedetto would be extremely proud of both of them, she just knew it and her heart swelled and another peal of laughter escaped her lips. They were absolutely crazy and running on pure adrenaline, still children, really, at the young age of twenty-one. They made a reckless team, an unbeatable team with just enough wit to be sly and innovative and just enough foolishness to be fierce and impulsive.
“Tori!” Her smile faded and a look of horror passed over her face as she tackled him. They went tumbling across the rooftop, rolling dangerously close to the edge as a hail of gunfire stormed from a helicopter that had risen and blocked their leap to the next rooftop. Their mission had been a success, Guilia had slain the Templar, but now, now they were being pursued.
 Nearby, something exploded.
The blast deafened Ettore and the shock threw both of them back, flattening them against the rooftop. Ett’s legs dangled dangerously over the edge. It was a dizzying drop to the ground below.
“Guilia!?” The roof started crumbling around them and sagging inward. She was rolling dangerously close to the edge. The drop was a canyon, yawning wide open and ready to swallow them. The machine guns were still whirring at them as he crawled closer to her and took hold of her hand tightly. His stomach was flattened tightly against the roof.
There was another blast, all around them lit with fire and toxic vapors. Ett coughed against the pain rising in his chest. The fumes were hazy and black as the bomb whirred off near them and Guilia looked at him, fear creeping through her eyes.
“Ettore, you have to run,” she struggled to her feet and pulled him with her before pushing him ahead through the thick fog. The machine guns had stopped as the entire roof was covered in haze. “You have to get out.” She was coughing now, a trickle of blood running from her nose. She pushed it away quickly, sniffing a little as another blast resonated near them and shook their already unstable footing.
“We can get away still,” his voice sounded distant and his head felt vacant. The world was spinning and he was vaguely aware of her dragging him somewhere… he couldn’t even figure where. The world was shaking and everything felt deathly hot to the touch. His skin felt like it was burning and he heard a sob. It didn’t even register that it was Guilia sobbing ahead of him. The energy they had felt only minutes before was gone. They were no longer free and unbeatable. They were kids, just twenty-one. Too young, really, to face the horrors of this world and its wars. Too young to die.
Another blast and he was thrown back against the cool rooftop. His head screamed in pain and his entire body protested against moving any more. His eyes closed and all he saw was black.
 “Ti volgio bene, fratellino.”
Ett awoke with a start, his adrenaline pumping and a cold sweat beading across his bare chest and his forehead. His fingers were grasping the sheets tightly, wrinkling them and pulling on them. His body ached as he had obviously been thrashing about, tense and heart hammering, for some time.
“Fuck,” he started when he realized someone was in the room with him. His cheeks felt moist and as he reached a trembling fist up, he brushed away the tears. “Drew?” he blinked and stared, bleary eyed, at the man for a minute or two before attempting to compose himself and steady his breathing. His entire body would not stop shaking. That was the last thing Guilia had ever said to him. They had both blacked out, he assumed. When he had awoken, he had been in the Assassin infirmary and Guilia had been long dead. Benedetto never had explained to him exactly what had happened… maybe he hadn’t even known. Tears threatened and burned at the corners of his eyes again.
“Still having the nightmares?” Drew was shrouded in shadow, arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the doorframe.
“They never stopped,” he swallowed but his throat was dry and scratchy and his eyes were watering so he rubbed his fists hard into them, “They just lessen sometimes.” He cleared his throat, his Italian accent heavy, “Why the hell are you in my room watching me sleep? You know that’s just fucked up.”
Drew seemed unphased by this. The scientific part of him had always been a little fascinated by Ettore’s abilities and connections to the other side. It defied all logic and therefore stumped him and pushed his desire to learn more – to come up with an explanation. “I think this is the first time you’ve actually slept in your own bunk since you’ve been here.” He noted casually as he toyed with the ring on his own finger. Since the fallout happened, it had been unnecessary for him and Keera to keep up their charade. She was no longer just his secretary helping him on his path to success. Nobody cared anymore, the media was dead, they could be what they wanted to be, what they were. So, he had begun to wear his wedding band again.
“I always sleep in my bunk,” Ett’s lie was bold and they both knew Drew didn’t believe a word of it. He had only been in the bunker for a little over a week and, Drew was right, this was the first night Ett had actually seen his own cot instead of Gracie’s. Honestly, he had almost forgotten he had even been afforded not only his own cot but his own small room too.
“You’ve been good for Gracie,” He ignored it and kept going. Drew sat down on the corner of Ett’s bed without permission and the younger man shifted away awkwardly. “She sleeps better now than she has in months. Ettore, I’m not pressuring you but…” Drew sighed and looked down at his own ring yet again. For a split second, the centuries seemed to catch up with him and he closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose before turning back to Ett, “things are different now. You’re a good kid.” “Are you trying to ask me something?” he laughed uneasily, eyeing the door and wondering if he could make a run for it before realizing that he had made the poor choice to sleep naked. Ett shifted deeper under the sheets. “Keera is doing just fine, Drew, if that’s what you were wondering? Addy is good too.” A faint smile traced Drew’s lips as he thought of Keera and his son. He missed them more than he had let on over the last few months. With Aleks and Gracie he felt like he should be the strong one, the one with all the answers. And, of course, he had many of the answers, he always did. But in this situation, well, sometimes there were no answers. Sometimes, just sometimes, even his genius couldn’t entirely fix this disastrous world.
Drew took Ettore’s hand and held it open in front of him, sliding something cool and smooth into it. The metal piled neatly in the center of Ett’s palm and he looked down to study it, but the light was dim in the tiny room. He blinked, almost certain that he could see it glowing a vibrant blue.
 “What the hell?”
“It’s a necklace, Ettore,” Drew stated matter-of-factly as if Ett were still a little boy. Drew’s eyes lit up as he looked at his piece of art. It seemed frivolous to create something like this when the entire world was falling apart, but he had poured his heart and soul into the pet project, “Gracelyn’s birthday is coming up soon. This is your gift for her.” Ett held it close to his face and squinted as he took it in. The chain was normal enough. Connected to it was a metal oval that was totally smooth on one side and continued to glow a radiant blue as he watched it. It ticked, which he thought was a little odd, like a heartbeat. That was when he realized that it was ticking out his heartbeat. Ett flipped it over and paled significantly as he read the words engraved on the back.
“Tu sei il mio unico tesoro”
There was a long pause as Drew watched, stoic, his eyes glittering a little under his patient expression.
“No,” Ett shoved the necklace back toward Drew as if it had burned his hand. “No.” he repeated it and shook his head. He had totally forgotten about Gracie’s birthday, but he had figured he would just share some of the pills he had found while on his travels. They both needed something that would get them high and completely fucked up, not this… this… what the hell was it even? What did Drew mean by it?
“No isn’t an option, Gimondi,” Drew returned the jewelry to Ett’s hand and closed his fist around it tightly and held it there. The little oval ticked harder as Ett’s heart hammered against his ribcage. “you are just as stubborn as your father. You and Gracie had been monogamous for almost twenty years now. I was amused at first, and I supported your light and easy going relationship. I know what pressure is like when it comes to love. So I didn’t care. But things have changed. You need to hold on to what is most important to you. You need to not let it go.”
Drew continued to hold Ett’s fist with the oval necklace tightly, “it glows blue only when the necklace is near to you or your DNA. However, she will always be able to hear your heartbeat no matter how far away you are or how close. Ettore, I think it’s time that you two make some type of declaration.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me… she… how the hell does that even work!?”
“She needs this,” Drew broke in. Ett blinked and stared at the fire hidden behind Drew’s dark brown eyes that were usually so casual and fun loving. “Just as much as you do.”

Everybody Make A Scene
Ett nearly ran into Gracie as she came to a sudden halt in the middle of his way. His front bumped lightly against her back and he leaned over her shoulder and eyed Rebecca darkly. He didn’t appreciate anybody interrupting their time together… especially not now that his pulse was racing and his head was light and airy. The music vibrated through him and the swaying bodies around them encouraged him to dance. He wanted to pull Gracie in and hold her close, rocking and allowing their bodies to become one.
That didn’t happen, however. His gaze went from Rebecca to a man standing beside her and his eyes narrowed and darkened. Something about this guy seemed familiar but with the state his mind was in, he couldn’t place it. Gracie was no longer in front of him, her warmth no longer coursing through his system and igniting him. He suddenly felt alone and deflated. He stood off to the side amid the turmoil of bodies and rubbed his hand over the back of his neck as he watched them forget him… even if it was only for a second.
Ett’s mouth opened to say something at his introduction but Georgio was already on to another topic, obviously indifferent toward him. His question made Ett’s blood boil with jealousy. He stood back and watched quietly as the couple disappeared before he himself faded into the clamor of bodies.
Ettore found a table near the back area of the room and sank down into it. His head was still spinning and he couldn’t focus on much, he knew he wanted to be laughing and dancing but he knew he wanted it with Gracie. But she didn’t need him as she had so many friends who demanded her attention. How could she have the time for him? His fists clenched, knuckles thrumming against the tabletop as he swallowed thickly. Gracie was his only friend - the only person he had allowed himself to become even a little close to. It was too risky to make friends with Templars or Assassins but there had always been something different about her. Something that had made it impossible for him to stay away.
But maybe she hadn’t felt that way?
Ett’s eyes remained trained on the couple as they moved through the dance floor under the pulsation neon green lights. He couldn’t pull his eyes away from them and at that precise moment, the fog in his head cleared and he knew he had recognized Georgio from somewhere. Back home, in his hotel suite, he had a file with this man’s face inside of it. He had been a Assassin target for a year now but his last known location had been in Malaysia. Nobody had been able to track him since that last sighting.
His back straightened and his skin prickled with sweat and anticipation. Ett’s mouth went dry and like a lion on the prowl, he rose slowly and moved closer through the swaying crowds of people. His fingers inched into his jacket and they brushed over a glittering golden dagger. It had been his sister’s once. Since her death, he had claimed it for his own.
He waited, blending into the crowds, pretending to have a good time. All the while his heart blackened toward this man who was running his fingers up and down Gracie. Ett’s senses shut off for a moment, he had to control this. He needed total control over the throbbing in his body and the light-headed feeling overcoming his nervous system. He tensed as Georgio moved away from Gracie and retreated to the men’s restroom. Ett followed from a safe distance, totally concealed into the crowds. He was a shadow moving swiftly through the dazzling lights.
The bathroom was filled with heavy smoke. Obviously a few of the scientists had retreated here to experiment with various tobacco concoctions. However, for now, it was deserted.
Georgio was looking at himself in the mirror, checking himself out to make sure he looked perfect for Gracie no doubt.
“You like her?” Ett leaned himself against the door to the bathroom, sealing it so no one else could enter. His tone was light, friendly even. His arms were crossed over his chest and his head was tilted to the side. The makeup had smeared around his face making him completely unrecognizable and demon-like. He smirked as Georgio didn’t seem to have an answer for him. “You know,” Ett moved forward and watched with glee at how the man tensed. The hunt was the best part. His heart was already hammering and his senses were already alert and prickling with life. “I think she likes you too,” the words rolled from his tongue, romantic Italian thick and inky.
“The Assassin order has been looking for you,” he leaned in closer, his eyes flicking fire as he changed the topic entirely. He watched as an edge of fear gripped Georgio’s face. The man was backed into the sink now and Ett was leaning in to whisper in his ear, “looks like I’ve finally found you. Time for you to pay for all the evil you have brought to this world.” He pulled out Guilia’s dagger, pressing a release button in the back so that the tip of it oozed with black poison. The stuff dripped onto Georgio’s white shirt and stained, burning through it and into his flesh.
“It’s the strongest poison in the world,” Ett watched as Georgio cried out and tried to run.
Ettore was faster, lighter and stronger than Georgio, however, and caught him, pushing him roughly against the white tiled wall. “Not so fast, Tesoro,” The words rolled from his tongue and he chuckled before backing up, his body language daring Georgio to make a break for it again. He enjoyed toying with his prey like a cat.
The man took the bait and charged him, pushing him back a few feet as Ett’s liquored mind was slow to retaliate. When he did, he grabbed Georgio’s arm and spun him around so they were back to front and Ett was pulling him close to his chest and holding the dagger above his throat. Ett twisted Georgio’s arm hard, pulling it out of its socket and, with a swift jerk upward, wrenched him around and flung him onto the floor. There was a crack as Georgio’s back connected with the unforgiving tiles.
Georgio was crying out in pain as his arm lay beside him, contorted and disfigured, obviously broken. Ett knelt down at his side and watched for a minute before flexing his fingers over the hilt of the dagger and swallowing.
“You should have never come back. You should have left Gracie alone,” he whispered the words sweetly in the man’s ear before plunging the dagger just above his heart, intentionally missing. “The next hour of your life will be the worst you have ever lived. There is only one cure for that poison and you don’t have it.” He sank down onto the floor as dark, thick liquid and blood oozed out of Georgio and spread across the white tiles, soaking into Ett’s clothes. “First, you’ll hallucinate, then you won’t be able to stop coughing up blood, but you won’t die. Your heart will race uncontrollably and you’ll lose your breath. Still you will live. Your last minutes will feel like hours and you will beg me to kill you and end your miserable existence.”
Georgio’s body seized and trembled as Ett remained knelt beside him and made the sign of the cross over his chest. His words trembled more than he anticipated as he murmured, “Da, quaesumus Dominus, ut in hora mortis nostrae Sacramentis refecti et culpis omnibus expiati, in sinum misericordiae tuae laeti suscipi mereamur. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.” The room was deathly still as his voice trailed off. Outside the party was still raging and the music gently throbbed the floor as Georgio writhed in pain. The dagger lay on the floor in a pool of blood beside them. Georgio screamed out and Ett felt suddenly very sober and very small, “God forgive me,” he whispered as he bent over the man, “Non trovo alcuna gioia in questo, ma non c'e altro modo. Requiescat in Pace.”
