Chapter one: anatomy flash cards
You first met Peter during chemistry class, his vigorous note taking a stark (no pun intended) contrast to your blender head of a brain that ground up information into its key components automatically. You had introduced him to Cornell notes, something you never used and he probably didn’t need but it got conversation going and you two started laughing. Eventually you started helping him with anatomy (one of the few subjects he wasn’t immediately gifted in) your encyclopedic knowledge of the human body made him give you a quizzical look, “why do you know so much about this?” He had asked with a laugh but his eyes had a slightly concerned look in them.
“I used to get really banged up from running around the woods with my friends when I was a kid so I learned first aid early and it kinda spiraled from there.” You had laughed. A wistful look crossing your features.
The answer had seemed to satisfy him as his face broke into a laugh as well, “whenever I got hurt my aunt or uncle would just patch me up!” He had said, a reminiscent smile on his face. “but I also grew up in the city, so I guess it’s different.”
You had let out a breathy laugh “yeah I guess so” but if only he knew what ‘running around in the woods with friends’ really ment…
That was over six months ago, and you two had only grown closer since. Peter (who you sometimes called Pete) still sucked at anatomy, physiology, and biology compared to other subjects like physics, and quantum mechanics but he could now at least remember some things.
Today was like any other day, you were sitting cross legged on the floor in his bedroom at (his) aunt May’s (she insisted you call her that as well because quote ‘you’re the same age as Peter, and you’re a friend of his so you’re effectively also my grand niece.’ Her words not yours.) house quizzing him on the bones in human limbs. “bones in fingers are called what?” You asked holding up a flash card with an x-ray of a hand with the fingers circled.
“phalanges”, Peter answered smoothly, like you said he was getting better, if not very slowly, but still.
He paused, face scrunched in concentration, he always screwed this one up. For a super genius it always so hard for Peter to grasp the intricacies of the human body. You knew he was good with tech so you had tried to get him to think about the body as machine but that had just confused him more. “carpels?” He asked slowly, not quite sure of himself.
You smiled at that, “Yep, you got it! and ankles are tarsals.” You laughed as he pumped his fist in triumph, shaking your head slightly. He smiled triumphantly and opened his mouth to say something but was cut off by aunt May knocking on the door before entering.
“Sorry to interrupt” the older woman said, a soft smile deepening the crows feet around her eyes. “I brought you two some snacks to eat.” You let out a soft huff of air through your nose. This was one of the many things you loved about Peter’s grand-aunt. No matter how old her grandnephew got or how old her guests were, she would always without fail give them plates of snacks.
You peeked at the plates, warm snickerdoodles, apple slices, and glasses of milk. “Thanks aunt May!” Peter said taking the plate gratefully and setting it down on the floor between you and him. You gave May a grateful smile as she turned to leave the room.
Even as a young adult Peter never failed to look boyish. You figured almost loosing pretty much everyone he cared about (including the two people who have partial custody of him, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, who are basically his parents) at seventeen probably had something to do with it. Peter was many things, but good at dealing with grief was not one of them.
You reached over and stole a cookie from Peter’s plate, to which he let out a theatrically offended gasp. “How DARE YOU!” He joked the same tone.
“Shut up,” you muttered playfully, shoving him lightly. “I think you have enough energy as is ya damn hyperactive spider child.”
“Hey, I’m an adult!” He laughed indignantly. Trying to grab the cookie from you, when that failed he shot w string of webs at the cookie but missed as you shoved it into your mouth grinning. You chewed quickly and swallowed before grinning at him.
“Thor would love you.” Peter grumbled “He pulled the same trick with Loki the other day and almost got thrown out of the tower.”
“Was this the same day you tried to make ice cream with Loki’s ice magic?” You asked, dunking your next cookie in the milk.
“Yeah, still don’t know how that didn’t work…” he muttered to himself, pouting slightly.
“You have to churn traditional ice cream dumbass. That’s why.” You said, pointing an apple slice at him incredulously.
“But I saw someone making it online without churning it!”
“They were either using a no churn recipe or they did it off screen. You know for a super genius you can be kinda dumb sometimes.”
Peter paused for a moment apparently weighing his options before he spoke “speaking of being an dumb, I’m going to be at the tower tomorrow but I’ll still need to study for this test, maybe we could walk there together?”
You shrugged unbothered. “Sure why not? As long as I’m not going to be kicked out randomly because you didn’t tell your dad.”
“For the millionth time, Mr.Stark is NOT my dad.” He groaned good naturally before attempting to steal a cookie from you but getting his hand swatted away before he could grab one.
“Yeah, yeah, keep telling yourself that.” You laughed.
