The day of the full moon, Bruce catches Matt in his bedroom with the door open. Matt is taking some crystals out of the drawer by his bed. Heâs laying them out on the bedspread, running his fingers over each of them as he goes. Bruce knocks on the open door of Mattâs room even though Matt probably heard him coming. Matt nods to him and he comes in, sits at Mattâs desk. He watches as Matt takes another crystal out, sets it next to the others that look almost identical in color. Bruce asks, âWhatâre those for?â Matt runs his finger over the one heâs just put down. âFew different things. This one absorbs bad energy.â He points to another, âThis one puts out good energy.â Another, âThis one brings luck.â Scooting closer on the chair, Bruce asks, âHowâd you learn all this?â Matt doesnât look up from his crystals as he shrugs. âInternet. Books.â Bruce puts out a hand and stops himself just short of touching a pale pink crystal. âSo is their purpose open to interpretation orâŚ?â âMostly.â Matt sits down by the headboard, careful not to knock the crystals over. âI just read however much I could then chose their meaning.â âYou chose their meaning?â Bruceâs brow furrows. âDoes that⌠work? Does that make them work?â âKind of.â âWhatâs that mean?â He wonders if heâs being ignorant for a second. Should he know more about crystals? Heâs not sure. In any case, Matt doesnât seem offended. He just answers, âItâs⌠Itâs really more about belief than making them work.â âSo are they like⌠your religion?â Matt seems on the verge of a smile. âNo. Not really. It may sound like it, but. No. ltâs about believing in something that⌠well. That you canât see.â Bruce almost laughs. âYou mean how people believe in you when they canât see you?â âYeah. Or how youâre just a myth most times.â He wasnât sure if thatâs a joke or not but he still smiles. He watches as Matt smiles back, a secret sort of smile, softening his whole face. Bruce feels a sort of awe wash over him at the sight. Matt is⌠pretty. Bruce gulps down his feelings. Repeats, âSo itâs about belief.â Matt is still smiling as he shrugs. âWhy not, right? I figured that as long as Iâm⌠this, I might as well.â âMight as well?â âBelieve in everything I can. If faeries and ghosts can exist, why canât rocks bring luck?â Nodding, Bruce leans back in his chair. âI like your logic.â Matt huffs out a laugh. âThanks.â In his mind, Bruce makes a mental note that asking about Mattâs crystals makes him happy. Heâs not sure why he wants to make Matt smile, but he just really, really does.
