Wolf Neighbours â Chapter 5
Miter had nearly fallen into the stagnant water when Gove had pushed him aside, and he hadnât seen the arc of her throw â it was like Mabek had disappeared when he turned around again.
She must have connected, though, from the way she was gasping into her hands.
He gently touched her shoulder, and she twitched violently.
âIâll go get your ax.â
The water was deep and murky; here and there splintered trunks of dead trees loomed beneath it, and Miter was very careful as he crept along the huge rotten cedar. Mabek was unresponsive â had she thrown well enough to kill? Miter had trained for years and never been that good.
But as he crept up and knelt near the hole the rogue guard had carved into the rot as he fell, all of Miterâs thoughts of humble human combat fell away.
What lay in the hole, limbs akimbo, ax buried deep in the side of its neck, was not Mabek.
It was undeniably a black bear. Its eyes had rolled back in their sockets; blood dribbled from its neck down around its forelimbs. It was not at all a guard.
But Mabek wasnât entirely absent. In its gaping, toothy jaws, the bear held most â but not all â of his head.
The mist pooled into the cavity of the tree as Miter knelt there, transfixed with horror.
And then he slipped, just enough to lose his balance, and flattened himself against the trunk instead of falling in the water â and the tree shuddered beneath him, cracking and snapping â and Miter looked up in time to see the bear, with its grisly prize still wedged in its mouth, and Goveâs ax still buried in its neck, slip through the broken wood into the murky waters below, and disappear.
He gently crept backwards from the hollow, where bubbles were slowly drifting up to the waterâs surface, and pushed himself back to his feet.
Beside him, Gove had gone still; she didnât seem to register his voice as he whispered;
âWeâre cursed.â

âIgnoring Reality Doesnât Make It Less real. Itâs Still Going To Happenâ Yasmin Moganed)
While half the world is ablaze due to catastrophic climate change our petty minded politicians have weaponised the green agenda in a selfish attempt to gain votes. The Tory Party would have us all burn.
âMichael Gove warns against treating net zero like âreligious crusadeâ as he calls for clampdown on green measures." (The Sun: 23/07/23)
Labour is no better.
ââŚshadow chancellor Rachel Reeves admitted on Friday that âŚthe party's much-heralded flagship commitment to spend ÂŁ28 billion a year on green investment would be delayedâ (Guardian:09/07/23)
If, like much of Europe and North America last week, we had been in the grips of a 40degree heat wave and were breathing in hot polluted air, I wonder if the Uxbridge by-election result would have been different? But itâs no good speculating. The least well off amongst us are unable to afford green policies and those with money are unwilling to subsidise them. Neither political party seems able to tell the electorate that saving the planet is going to be personally expensive.
Maybe this is part of our island mentality? Maybe we think we can remain immune from the horrors surrounding us? Do we really subscribe to David Cameronâs mantra of cut the âgreen crapâ? He ended onshore wind projects, solar subsidies and energy efficiency schemes. We all paid the price for those shortsighted decisions in our massive energy bills last winter.
It was Cameronâs fear that right wing UKIP was leaching voters away from the Tory Party that led to the Brexit referendum, and we all know how that is working out for us.
âBritain to be worst-performing major economy this year, warns IMFâŚBritain is the only G7 economy forecast to shrink in 2023" (Guardian: 31/01/230)
Following in Cameronâs footsteps, we now have Gove and Sunak also telling us its time to cut the âgreen crap" because they see it as a vote winner. Sod the unintended consequences of such a decision. Having refused to finance a dirty vehicle scrappage scheme, and having seen the electorate of Uxbridge and South Ruislip turn against ULEZ, they perceive abandoning green policies as a way to beat Labour at the next election. Labour, worried about their defeat, see abandoning green policies as a way of reassuring the electorate that voting Labour will be cost free.
There is no âcost-freeâ option for saving the planet and it is time our politicians had the courage to admit this publicly. It is also time for us, the electorate, to start thinking internationally. As the great Elizabethan poet John Donne once wrote :
âNo man is an island, entire of itselfâŚand therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for theeâ (John Donne, 1572-1631)
If that is the case then I will make sure to continue showering you with affection, honey! I want you to feel loved, because you are and I want you to be happyđ¤§â¤â¤â¤ My beautiful blob/gremlin/Meme-Angel...heheheheđ
