What exactly is 'interesting'?!
We are the Google generation. "Just Google it!" Technology has put worlds of information in our hands - so much information that its difficult to get to the root of what is interesting. As humans we are naturally curious. Whether we're aware of it or not, we are on a constant quest for knowledge. Do we have too much information at our fingertips? We can access information anywhere - through our laptops, phones, tabs even watches and glasses (Google Glass). More people on earth have access to a mobile phone than a toilet. You can even access free courses online offered by universities to strengthen your knowledge in different areas (check out https://www.futurelearn.com/courses)
Is it too overwhelming? Gone are the days when you'll take a book out of the library to find out more about baking - now we 'just Google it.' We are flooded with information - so much so that it's becoming increasingly difficult to hone in on what is interesting. The heart of advertising is understanding what is the most interesting thing about a product, brand or a company and communicating this message to the consumers. If you truly attract the interest of the consumer, then they will want to find out more, which drives engagement - arguably the main purpose of advertising.
This is a job that journalists have to nail. If their headlines don't get to the root of what is interesting - they're essentially failing to capture the attention of their readers
Just take a moment to consider these questions:
How would you describe something that is interesting?
What is it that makes something interesting?
To me, something is interesting if it makes me want to find out more. Whether it's funny, sad, or entertaining, if it gets me to engage with the wider topic then it is interesting.
Let me know your thoughts? I find this a really fascinating topic!
